From reading these boards it appears that some private schools in Melbourne offer these type of sporting scholarships.

My question is, are there any schools in Perth that do the same sort of thing, for EX Wesley, Christ Church grammar etc, and how do they find these players.

Easy

15's State Schoolboys and 16's State (and old boys in the Wheatbelt are always on the lookout).

What age is your lad?

nope

theres an agreement that these schools dont give sporting scholarships, and if they do, those students cant play interschool sport

I would strongly suggest that Guildford has been avoiding this by giving out 'music' scholarships to students who just happen to be brilliant AFL players - which would be supported by their recent increased competitiveness when compared with the other PSA schools.

Also CCGS's aboriginal boys who are on scholarships all mysteriously to be great AFL and/or basketball players...;)

Make of that what you will.

Guildford finished last, and Christchurch finished second last so its obviously not too big of an issue ;)

pretty sure that the tone deaf buddy went to wesley on a music scholarship. There was an article a couple of years back saying 10+ % of trinity boys were on some form of scholarship.

they can get around it by offering "bursaries" to kids who they think deserve or want to come to the school but don't have enough money to afford fees. coincidentally most of these boys also happen to play colts etc.

tc also got around it (and probably still do) through 'religious education' scholarships i think

Gee this thread has kept on going .... after what was originally a bit of trolling?

The inclusion of the scholarship boys (and maybe they are not? Who knows? Who cares?) is a great way to keep the PSA competition as a premier competition in WA.

In the same way, the coaching of the PSA teams has become more professional.

It raises the bar for the competition and increases competition for places on the teams. Cannot do much about it.

The counter could be that the State Representation requirements could be seen to dilute the purchased power for these teams. The Representative players could be seen to be less likely to perform hard on the PSA competition. Not speaking about your lad, Mum!

It all still comes down to the coaching and the team belief? The whole team?

Looks like a very even competition next year.

No not trolling at all, i have read on these boards about footy scholarships in Melbourne and was interested to know if they happen in Perth.

My son actually went to a footy camp at Wesley college in Perth, and i happened to notice a picture of Buddy Franklin on their honour board, and i guessed that he may have been on a scholarship there.

The PSA Schools officially do not offer sporting scholarships.

They do, however, offer academic scholarships. And if you happen to see a student walking around the school who happes to:

1) Be as dumb as a bag of hammers
2) Be a potentially elite sportsman and,
3) On an Academic Scholarship

Then the third is fact and the first two are just coincidental.

I agree with everything you have said here radmac, I went to Wesley and there have been some boys who were awesome at footy who came to Wesley in Yr 10 or Yr 11, basically meaning the school had seen them at district development and asked them to come for reduced fees. I know for a fact than back in 2006, Wesley played Northam SHS in Belt Up cup and Alistair Smith ripped up Wesley, the next year he was at Wesley, not entirely sure if it was a scholarship or not though. But I don't see the problem with it as long as it is monitored, then the schools can hand out the 'academic' and 'music' scholarships to kids who actually deserve them.

Trinity seemed like it was bringing too many good footballers for some of them not to be on scholarships. Many PSA schools are handing out indigenous scholarships, bringing in heaps of good footballers that way. Great idea.

As I said as long as they monitor it i.e. the headmasters/heads of sport of each school come together and be given a cap on sporting scholarships and then bring a list of offered scholarships. Let the group know who they are, who they play for and how much of the fees are being subsidised. That would be the only way it could happen.

Saw his dad today and asked .....apparently it's a partial academic scholarship to someone who just also happens to be a very tidy footy player.

I will not reveal what school my son is at, but he is year 7 at a PSA school in Perth, which last football season flogged most schools convincingly, and did not lose a match, AFAIK, and i met quite a few of the parents, no-one seems to be on scholarships.

However that may change at a older age level.

Cheers Phil.

I genuinely don't know - one would think if there were kids on scholarships, it would probably be known.

My sons school has some indigenous kids on scholarships ( pretty sure) but they did not play ones last season ( year 7), i am sure being good at sport is helpful, however, it appears to me, they give scholarships to deserving kids, rather than just ones who are good at sport.

Having said that, i have no idea of everyones finances etc, so it is possible that specific football scholarships have been given out, there is certainly enough fantastic sportsmen there.

Scholorships come in at Year 11 ..... after the bodies have grown. Buddy was a budding musician ........

At Year 7, the bodies are too immature - a bit of kick and giggle. All changes in Year 11 - gets very serious

Look at Scotch last year - good team, well coached.

Amazingly another boy I know has just won a ummmmmm academic scholarship.

What a joke ....just call them sporting scholarships and drop the charade.

I know of a few indigenous boys on scholarships at a top Perth private school, not all of them are top footballers but a few are

If you have talent, even in the "lower" public school arena, there are processes available to gain a further leg up and entry into a particular school.
Not scholarships as such but the school does cover the cost of the extra training and exposure at high level for the age.
For example; Peel Thunder and Freo run a specialist program for up and coming AFL talent at Comet Bay College.
There is a selection and trial process for students to get in and the zoning restrictions that normally apply to the schools are waived.
Those that make the grade get offered a position at the school and then gain access to Peel Thunder development coaches.
I believe Cecil Andrews actually offers paid scholarships for their AFL program and there's a few more.
West Coast have an alignment with Wanneroo Secondary College.
