More info on Jarman Impey:

Jarman’s second season at the club was every bit as solid as his first. He played 17 games and continues to show promise as a lock down small defender. He also provided glimpses of what may be to come in the future with his first half against Hawthorn in round 21 showing the damage his explosive speed and skill can do when set loose through the middle of the ground.

Im not sure about that - given we have Wingard, Gray, Monfries etc up there. If there are injuries to any of them, yeah he could be an option in attack.

He's a top draft pick so he'll play at least a couple of games. Whereabouts will not be an issue initially, he'll just get U8 ball-chasing tasks. A few tapes of Neade and Wines early in the 2013 season will show him what he need to do to make a name. I look forward to seeing him in the pre-season games.

Hinkley, Rohde and Parker all stressed that Impey would be groomed as a running defender at Port Adelaide. Hinkley plays the +1/+2 in defence so Impey could easily get an unaccountable role early on as a release player from the backline.

Impey happy to head to defence

DESPITE spending the bulk of his junior career up forward and in the midfield, Port Adelaide draftee Jarman Impey has no qualms about potentially spending more time in defence.
Impey averaged 18 disposals and nearly a goal a game for the Murray Bushrangers this season but was drafted to the Power as a "small defender with some speed and aggression", according to Port Adelaide recruiting manager Geoff Parker.

Yeah I get the general defensive vibe, but he's not going to be a KPP so I'll shed no tears if I ever draw him in the Cheer Squad's first goal raffle.

He is a decent build for a young lad. Height in cm less 98 seems to be the right body to weight ratio.

Hopefully he is good overhead to make up for a lack of height.

8-10 games is possible but 6-8 more likely.

This lad has the potential to be 'something special" as Bruce Mac would say. Speed, Balance, good on both sides of his body, good football brain, etc. Looking forward to watching the lad blossom.

Jarman Impey reveals the inspiration behind his career is his father

WHEN Jarman Impey runs onto the field for Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium today the tears will well in his dad’s eyes.
“There will be a tear there because I’m just so proud of Jarman and what he has achieved,’’ Glenn Impey said.

“We’ve been through a lot together and to see him playing at AFL level and playing so well in his first season, well, as I said, I’m just so proud of him.’’

Great read here on my mate Impey. Really instills faith in this kid. Good head on his shoulders.

IT IS in his moments of cheekiness that Jarman Impey reminds you that he is still a teenager.

Like when he walks up and extends his hand after having his picture taken, wide grin on his face, and asks, “That it, boss?”

And when, after he’s assured that he’s all done, he starts jogging rather than walking across Alberton Oval, bouncing a football, and casually offers over his shoulder: “Catch up soon.”

Because Impey, 19, a rare talent from Shepparton in country Victoria, has been through enough in his life that he could fool you into thinking he’s a veteran rather than a rookie. One who doesn't get swept up in the exaggerated importance of football and its machinations.

It is understandable for a young man who grew up raised by his father, Glenn, after his parents divorced when he was young. He felt like he had to act like the man of the house when Glenn was struck by cancer and his “nanna’’ moved in to look after him and his younger sister, Paigan.

“I guess I had to (grow up early),’’ Impey said. “I don’t know if I’m more mature, but I try to look at the bigger picture.

“And Ken (Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley) has been great in understanding that there’s more to life than footy.’’

Impey is about to begin his second season with the Power, having chalked up an impressive 18 games in his first season after being snapped up with the club’s first selection (No.21) in the 2013 draft.

You could tell from the practice games that he could play. He had a sense of adventure about him, was prepared to take opponents on and hid the fact he was a bit starstruck about his new surroundings.

Off a half-back flank, he has the dash and daring that makes you think “something can happen here’’ every time he has the ball in his hands.

He’s still going to have to fight for a regular spot, because the Power is enjoying an era of rich talent in every part of the ground, but he has time on his side and Hinkley speaks highly of how he’s performed since he arrived at the club last summer.

“Jarman had a really good first year with the club and he’s attacked his second pre-season with the right attitude of continuing to improve,’’ Hinkley said. “We expect with the work he’s putting in he’ll take another step forward this year.”

Impey is settling in, but he’s the first to admit his brief time in the big league has been eye-opening.

It has forced him to refocus: before being drafted, everything was about getting drafted. Then it was about getting over the hurdle of playing and training alongside players he had previously looked up to as a fan.

“It surprised me, for sure,’’ Impey said. “If you sat me down a couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I’d get drafted.

“You wouldn’t have thought you’d play so many games in your first year.

“Just the intensity ... the workloads that we do (surprised me) and just how strong the top-age players are compared to us just coming in. How elite they are at running.

“When you first go out there, you’re definitely lost. I’d say it takes you a good month or so to adjust to the patterns and the training and the speed of the game.

“When I first came across I lived with Brent Renouf and he had Austar (pay TV) and I was just watching the Power playing flat-out.

“Then coming in and training these guys, it was a shock but it motivated me.’’

Port Adelaide was another eye-opener. He knew he would have to shift if he was to become and AFL player, Impey just had no idea of the rich history and significance of the club.

“I didn’t know much about Port Adelaide before I was drafted,’’ Impey said. “I knew Ollie Wines, who’s from Echuca, was playing there, Tom Clurey, that they were an up-and-coming club that was building.

“But it (the history) definitely floors me. It’s amazing.’’

Impey is part of a group of young players who are entering the club at an exciting time, not having experienced the struggles under previous regimes.

He has an ally in house mate Clurey, who grew up in the same part of country Victoria as Impey, but there are a range of players with similar backgrounds growing up at Port Adelaide.

“Tom’s from Katamatite, which is about 15 minutes out of ‘Shep’, and I played a year with him (back there) actually,” Impey said.

“I’m close to Tom, Cam O’Shea, Ollie Wines, Jakey Neade ... the first to third-yearers are pretty close to each other.’’

To Impey, though, it keeps coming back to family. Father Glenn is also his best mate and they speak daily. He’s close to his sister, and has become very close to half-brother Joeldan, the son of his mother from a new relationship.

“It was always going to be tough, living away from my family, but it was always a goal of mine to play at the elite level,’’ Impey said. “We obviously discussed this — if I was ever going to be drafted I could play over in WA or in Queensland ... but they were so supportive.

“Kenny and everybody have been awesome — ‘Just yell out if you’re homesick’. If there’s been an opportunity to go home for a weekend, they’ve been all for it.

“I couldn’t have asked for more.

“I’m pretty close to the old man and we do a lot of things together. Fishing, car shows, water skiing ... always doing something on the weekends. And I’m pretty close to my sister. I’m sure she’s missing me annoying her.

“Dad’s had another year in remission. He’s fighting fit ... you wouldn’t believe he was ever sick. He’s looking 100 per cent and he’s into his fitness, trains all the time.

“He’s handed me over to Port Adelaide but we’re always in contact.’’
