Fine work, Knightmare. Many thanks.

They have those little binocular medals already don't they?

Ah, they do too. We need to do something else then!

Great work this year KM.
Would you have similar views from a supercoach perspective?
Do you believe Lobb will get game time in 2014 and Josh Prudden?

Cam Wood to be the ruckman to get in 2014 ey ey ;) Seems like such a strange selection. :(.....

The key forwards might have higher ceilings and those inside types or back flankers you might be able to add +10 to get a feel for their supercoach potential but it's all close enough. Unless you're say Naitanui where or Dangerfield where you're ball is so heavily contested which I wouldn't say of any of these recruits on that same extreme.

Lobb may get a few games going by how many games Mumford misses most years. But he's not playing ahead of anyone next year and is very much a development project needing more time so if he does play it wouldn't be more than 2-3 games unless GWS are really struggling to find a ruck option.

Prudden may play some games but if he does again minimal. Only played the two VFL games and was ok but hardly dominant. You'd want to hear rumblings that he's training the house down before he even gets onto your radar.

I can't help but feel sorry for Carlton picking up Cameron Wood. Even as a rookie. His story at Collingwood was in 2009 he showed some promise and then after that he just didn't play to an acceptable standard. Didn't dominate at VFL level and at AFL level lost the ruck battle every week leaking opposition impact allowing his opponent to man-handle him every week (even at 108kg). He's not someone I'd class even as acceptable depth as someone I would have delisted after the 2010 and 2011 seasons. I've never seen anyone play 60+ senior AFL games and look as disinterested as Wood and I'm staggered that he received another opportunity.

KM, thoughts on 7/7 (8/8 if you include Brown) Tasmanian prospects who got a combine invite getting picked up by AFL clubs? That's 1/3 of our best 22, even if you include the underage ineligibles! Thanks in advance :p

What do you think of players like D.Cameron, Tsitas, Hourigan, Miller, Sully, Thorp and Fort not getting drafted KM?

Surprised they didn't get a shot but all have the opportunity to have futures in our game still and all have ability.

Cameron as a ruckman is someone who has the ability to go back to the WAFL and work his way up. Excellent tap ruckman, skilled, finds it around the ground and can go forward and take a mark. It just tells me clubs don't want to invest in projects and if he puts in the time in the state leagues that he can work his way up.

Tsitas was excellent and I think can step straight into the VFL if he wants to next year with his inside ability and more than hold his own. One of the really excellent inside players in this draft and if he can add some extra outside hurt factor to his game then he'll be very draftable.

Hourigan as an undersized key forward will always have his questions but having not played any senior footy and with that extra weight he'll need to put the work into his body to convince recruiters. Has the form on the board and has not only the marking ability but ability at ground level so I like his scope to improve and become draft relevant. Has the ability to dominate the SANFL next year if he puts in the work over the summer and that will put him back in the minds of recruiters.

Miller as a tall rebounder is excellent with his ability to not only intercept mark but run and carry and take on the game with that sidestep. A bit like Langdon last year unlucky to miss out but has some real talent and if he puts in the work and continues to build on his game he can not only gt drafted but make the grade in a big way.

Thorp I can only imagine missed out due to his reputation as a junior as a primadona and for his early career issues. He's dominant now and is one of the few who has turned things around for himself both on and off the field. I'd like to see him move to the VFL or SANFL to get exposure against better competition so that he can prove the doubters wrong. You don't kick 78 goals from 20 games as a high leading forward by accident. And you don't captain/coach your team to a premiership and be named the best player in his league by accident either.

Fort also surprises me as one of the less bad and more capable talls this year. Like his brother he'll have to work his way up through the state leagues but can become a good state leaguer and has nice scope to improve.

KM,

Thoughts on Melbourne's rookie selections, James Harmes, Max King & Alex Georgiou?

Thanks in advance

Harmes is a solid choice. He plays the right way through the midfield with his hardness and is still young and has good scope to develop. If I extended my power rankings out further he'd feature inside my top 80 as one of those who I wouldn't be opposed to drafted without being top of the list but I like him as a fit for Melbourne.

King is a project and one who was expected to go inside the national draft. That said he's not one I'd necessarily draft. He's a high character guy but he's a rake of a tall who isn't overly dominant either forward or through the ruck. Melbourne have enough tall forwards and no.2 ruck types so it's not a fit I particularly like.

Georgiou as a state leaguer has had a number of good years in the SANFL and as a rookie I feel is a high percentage choice with those state league defenders from the SANFL typically going pretty well.

That Mitch Thorp guy missed out and he was my second ranked Tasmanian this year but as a state it's obviously an exciting result.

Good result for your man Templeton after your earlier doubts of him missing out.

Kade Kolodjashnij was always clearly the best Tasmanian talent and I think he'll show it with Gold Coast.

Templeton was overrated with Brady Grey better but Templeton's draft position as Grey's was I feel was around the mark he should have gone.

Brown I'm happy for knowing what he's gone through but may not have taken him quite so early.

Nankervis was a strong choice by Sydney and while it's earlier than I expected I'd be willing to use that selection on him as someone I feel can really develop.

Pearce taken earlier than I would have taken him. Same story with Jake Kolodjashnij. Zac Webster I wouldn't have taken as a national draft selection but as a rookie at least he's not the worst choice.

Yeah, really happy that he got through, didn't think he would there for awhile. Really happy with the Saints right now.

Only time will tell who is right about Templeton vs Grey. Knowing what I do, I don't think Templeton was overlooked in the ND purely for football reasons. I really like Grey also and tipped him to go around the 50 mark, but I rated Templeton a lot higher as a long term prospect. Templeton on his game is incredible to watch. Templeton really has no great deficiency apart from question marks over his long kicking, which is really neither here nor there. I am not convinced his speed is an issue, particularly considering AFL is an endurance game. His repeat sprints were quite good, and they should count more than burst speed when thinking about speed in match conditions. I think we'll know in three years who got the better of that prediction.

I was always confident of JK towards the latter half of the year, and once again Wells took the guy I was pumping up as underrated (last year Thurlow). People talked about KKs improvement over the year, JK's improvement was underrated and he deserved his spot and should have gone even higher imo. Needs to work on his skills a bit, but plenty there already with JK.

Pearce was a pleasant surprise. Didn't pay much attention to him all year, thought he was more of a rookie prospect given how much physical development he needs and how he didn't really stand out in the champs (but played well for Devonport by all reports). He shows how much height and athleticism is valued at AFL level these days.

I agree on Webster. He was either late draft or rookie. But a good rookie prospect.

Hey KM would love to hear your thoughts on Honeychurch at 60, cheers!

He's one of the super smalls this year I like. He's just not a great fit for the Dogs after picking up Hrovat last year and having so many quality inside types already.

Late draft while Honeychurch is relatively good value I question how great he is as a fit for the Dogs.

He'll still at least help the VFL team and be valuable on that level but it's going to be hard to break into that midfield.

He's as hard as you'll ever find from a guy at that height and size and is an incredible inside ball winner but he lacks some outside class and his footskills are not great.

Gotta be to differ, Pruden was basically best on ground in a VFL game against Collingwood.
Was dropped the next week due to Quota of Bulldog listed players at Willy.
Had an ankle injury and missed the rest of the year.

Hey Knightmare, was reading back on your comments about Matty Crouch, and a few good games in it looks like you might have been on the money. What have you thought of what you have seen this year with him?

Crouch has gone about as I expected. He averaged 37 disposals per game through the TAC last year and in his one VFL game had 25 disposals so you'd be a little concerned if scouts are surprised by how he's going.

I've always considered Crouch a top 10 quality selection (excluding the mini draft selections) and was never concerned about his ability to accumulate at senior level. He'll have an even easier find accumulating once he improves his endurance Matthew Boyd numbers aren't out of the question if he puts in the hard yards.

By foot Matt lacks polish which was the primary knock on him but if you've got enough polish around him through the midfield (which Adelaide look to have) then he's definitely someone you can win with.

Hey KM,
We picked up Dumont who was a slider but I don't really know much about him. He's making steady progress in the VFL. It concerns me a little that he slid the way he did and we managed to pick him up...good for us I guess but the recruiters must see something that we don't for him to slip through.
Do you rate him? More importantly do you think he'll make it?

Dumont is in with a chance to make the grade. Going ok at VFL level to this point which is a good start. Swallow, Ziebell, Dal Santo, Wells, Cunnington and Bastinac are better talents but after that Dumont is the next mid I see in the depth chart.

If you want a comparable quality talent Hawthorn's Mitch Hallahan is someone I'd rate as pretty similar to Dumont so once that midfield vacancy presents Dumont can get a game and with continued improvement quite possibly hold a position.

He should perhaps have gone somewhere closer to pick 20 than 30 but don't get too caught up in where he was drafted. There are always guys who slide who shouldn't and in 2013 it seems with those midfielders mostly due to preference towards specific types and needs which has seen those on-ballers drop as we've seen with Dunstan and Crouch who both should have gone earlier.

Salem was Casey's best player today with 34 disposals and has played well in his other VFL games. It will be interesting how long Roos waits to put him in the firsts. Good speed and disposal.

Roos doesn't rush first years into his teams.

Salem has the scope to be a pretty natural fit and while he's relatively quick and a relatively good user of the footy it's his physical edge that makes him interesting. He won't be a franchise talent but a piece on a winning team. Sure.

Haven't seen Salem play this year but I'm relatively content for now to stick to that assessment.

I was rather hoping you'd review my love for St Kilda's national draft and my high rating of Dunstan instead.

But we win some, we lose some.

Don't worry too much. Everyone else on our board is. Footy Tragic as well with all of our picks in his top 15.

So far so good. Hard to have asked for a better start to this years draft group. Acres looking pretty special in his first 2 games of VFL too.
