Retired Daniel Merrett (2002-2016)

He was immense tonight. Forward, back, ruck, anywhere he was needed. I fear that he's our new ruckman for 2014 though ....
' agree with all of this. There is no doubt in my mind that he is currently the most versatile big man in the AFL. He didn't have a great night in the ruck though. While he contested well, and was good around the ground, he won only 3 hit-outs throughtout the night (equal to Rockliff). Good teams will be able to use ruck superiority to their advantage better than Carlton did.

Time for Merrett to retire. Disgusting performance today. At what point do people run out of excuses for his poor form? Two disposals in the first half, ten for the game for a return of a solitary goal at full forward and then there is the damaging hit on Cam Pedersen. http://www.afl.com.au/video/2014-08-03/merrett-reported-for-headhigh-hit

His head high hit on a player who had marked the ball and was was completely open was not only pathetic, it once again demonstrated his lack of discipline and the distance between what he should be contributing to our club as a senior player and what he actually delivers.

In over 45 years of closely following VFL / AFL football I never thought I would say this about a FITZROY or Brisbane player, but I really do hope the match review panel throws the book at him.

Watched him very closely today.

Absolutely insipid and uninterested and just not up to AFL level and then not for the first time this season commits an absolute gutless, weak sniper act.

And he has the club at heart.

Its actually a blessing in disguise the MRP will out for him some time and hopefully for the remainder of the year considering the Lions match committee doesn't have the balls to drop him.

You're going to be very disappointed

Plenty said about his first three quarters, but he really began to turn things around in the fourth quarter where he became very important.

Didn't completely drop his bundle despite the crowd casting him as the villain.

I think this is absolutely something worth discussing, but I reckon it deserves it's own thread rather than be discussed on roster watch, which is mostly where people come for player info rather than opinion.

And 3KZ is Football and Dylan12, you might not care, but there are some of us who feel that timing is important, and that maybe a day or two's waiting time is in order before you jump back on the anti-Merrett crusade.

I think this is a low point in Merrett's career and a bit of circumspection is in order.

Agreed. Sniping has indeed been committed today but I'm not sure Daniel Merrett is the key culprit.

The vile invective that gets used by some about our own players... dead ****ing set... shaking my head.

Yeah, it's okay to be critical, but there's a line and the two aforementioned posters are well over it.

Some people have set a benchmark of baseline hysteria and invective that has to be exceeded time after time in order to maintain the some effect.

I am not sure if they realise that it just makes people roll their eyes and say "here we go again" and all you have is a big pile of damp gunpowder.

If you put your amplifier on 11 by default, people eventually just put their fingers in their ears.

Ok guys, I know you're enjoying congratulating each other on how sensible you are but it's even more off-topic than usual for a "Daniel Merrett" thread.

Anyway returning to the root topic, I still have plenty of time for Dan and it is sad to see him really battling like this.

I note the pre-emptive mocking has begun of those who believe he is a passionate club man, but I couldn't care less. He's a heart-on-sleeve confidence player in a serious psychological trough right now. He needs support and guidance, not vitriolic condemnation and blatant depreciation of his considerable contribution to the club over his journey.

Hopefully the inner sanctum will give him the attention he needs because he seems totally at sea and caught up in a riptide of frustration right now. Painful to watch.

How so?

The guy isn't up to standard and yet is continuously selected and what's worse, is the constant justification and excuses for his poor form.

I bet Aaron Cornelius, Travis Johnstone and even Brent Moloney all wish they too were afforded the opportunity that the match committee continuously give Merrett.

It was really hard to watch Daniel today, he is certainly not a forward and it's time to throw another kid into his position to see what they can do. His frustration in not being able to have a serious impact on games clearly took its toll on him today. It's likely he will get 2-3 (I think he has some carry-over points) weeks which will carry him through to almost the end of the season so it might be time to take a step back, refresh, and get ready for a big year down back next season.

He has been a fantastic club man and he will bounce back.

Dan Merrett is our best full back...forced out of that position early in the season o play at full forward by,at that time, our lamentable failure to replace Mitch Clark and to a certain extent due to Staker's continuing injury issues...then Browny is forced to retire...Hooray for the signs that Close and McStay are showing but experience wise right now they are babes in the woods but let's hope that they develop in precocious manner.

Years ago the decision was made to make a KPD of Merrett where he has been very good and at times some had him contending for All Australian honours and had our key forward assets been up to scratch at the start of this season he would never have been moved from full back where he is still a better proposition than Maguire and Clarke...IMO...while I still acknowledge the sterling work that Goose and Jace have done there with Merrett forward..
