Footscray(and Footscray West) is very close to the city, has relatively cheap rent, has more and more young singles moving here and, oh yeah, we just lurve Hawthorn supporters.:)

:D

Chris, put me down for a couple. I'm hoping to live the Bart Simpson dream of having monkey butlers and they sound perfect.

I used to live in two different places in Brunswick, which is full of young people and lotsa pubs, public transport, Carlton, Fitzroy, you name it. Rent in the first place (Brunswick West) was an unbelievable $175 pcm, but the second place was a more realistic $315 pcm, which included a gardener! But you can find nice places around Brunny between those prices.

The attic then?

Actually there was already closet room being made and clean sheets being prepared in readiness for the day you moved in!! :D

Alright alright alright a real answer, as someone else said, the north west corridor of
Essendon/Moonee Ponds/Brunswick/Carlton has good proximity to the city and plenty of pubs/eateries/clubs etc around it.

Also if you got one there it would make it easy for me to have a place to crash on the way home from the footy after friday night games!! :D had to get some self interest in there somehow...

Moonee Ponds, Maribyrnong and Ascot Vale are nice, houses aren't too small and usually priced in the $300s. Yarraville is a little cheaper but the houses are a bit smaller and streets are narrow, so parking is a problem with no driveways either. All of these suburbs are within 10 km of the CBD and have great public transport.

Essendon, Coburg and parts of Pascoe Vale are pretty good too.

Port Melbourne and South Melbourne are quite good areas but pricey.

Avoid Richmond, Fitzroy, central Footscray and St.Kilda - drug infested slums full of freaks.

Recommendation : Moonee Ponds/Ascot Vale

Burwood may deceive. It's close to many nice suburbs, such as Hawthorn, Glen Iris, Camberwell, Armadale. You may think "it's close to the city, and clean and the houses are a good size and there are a lot of great suburbs around it". That's what I thought. It is a dry suburb, and it sucks. Pay the extra.

I do agree with Brunswick/Moonee Ponds, too, as well as Ivanhoe. All are very pleasant places with heaps to do, that would suit just about all lifestyles.

Clifton Hill and Northcote are worth a look

Add Fairfield too that.

Inner City, closeness to Kew (next suburb), Hawthorn etc., ample parklands, a vibrant shopping street (Station St), the Yarra and a big percentage of young professionals make it the ideal place.

Some parts of Fairfield are as nice as Kew but the good thing is it does not have Hawthorn or Kew prices.

Im almost getting a feeling of negativity here.

Sly,

Having a family involved in the building industry, I tend to echo Darky's sentiments. The Ascot vale/Moonee Ponds area is superb. Right near the Maribyrnong river, close to the city, yet the suburb doesn't "feel" close to the city. The houses are big enough, to make you feel you are in an outer suburb.

It is not the traditional "name "area of Melboure (like Toorak, or South Yarra for example), but it is quality. It's roughly to the north-west of the city and won't take you more than 10 minutes to get to the CBD.

I would actually like to move there if I could choose anywhere in Melbourne. It is reasonably priced, but not out of your range, going by the prices you are willing to pay.
