So don't get Danger next year get Cockatoo this year?
Where's the taco meme when you need it?

He's obviously not the same level talent. He's quick but not Danger quick and he'd be more inclined to play back rather than forward when not in the midfield. He does have potential to be an A-grader. Was hoping we'd try get him as a late/rookie pick but I think we'd be pushing it to get him with a 3rd now.

Would our pick 31 get him or would he be gone by then?

I'd walk away happy with the draft if we got Weller/Ahern at 11 or if gone Duggan and then Cockatoo at 30 odd if we were real lucky Smith there and cockatoo later. Plus Panos in the rookie draft.... **** while I'm at it Petracca, McCartin and Durdin.

I think you're overrating Steele. Nice player but good chance to be there at our third I reckon. I would hesitate to downgrade our first, given Weller or Ahern are a step up on what you'd get at 20.

Another pick in the top 40 would be great. I'd trade any of those you mention, except Grimey.
I rate Steele highly extremely good footballer that just makes the correct decision when it matters and is a very smart player

Im not confident that Ahern or Weller will be available @ #12 TBH

Marc Pittonet (Oakleigh Chargers)

Born 3.6.1996, 201cm, 100kg

AFL biography: Ruckman who is highly competitive and aggressive in the contest and directs the ball well at stoppages. Has good skills set including his overhead marking.

Mark Smart, Oakleigh Chargers, development manager: "He's really stood up in the last part of the year and he was probably our best player in the finals. He's a big, strong, aggressive ruckman and his hit-outs to advantage and ability to get around the ground with some athleticism really stood out to me. He really impacted games and he played against some real quality opponents, especially throughout the finals, so I think he stamped himself as the best ruckman in the competition."

I have no issue getting Cockatoo first round pick after his sprint results and also went well agility wise to apparently.

We can get Garlett or Mclean or others second round.

Cockatoo meets the definition of X factor but its the size/weight for an indigenuous player with height/plus leap and ability that minimises risk IMO.

I would even get the recruits Waylon in as a rookie and Choco can assist them and we could get a nitro glycern boost to the clubs prospects going forward! We could really create a climate for them to excel and Edwards can assist with his leadership to!

The other thing with Cockatoo is he has traits that suggest he could play inside, outside, back or forward. It gives him more of an opportunity to succeed at AFL if he can play effectively in other roles. His weight means he has the basis to stick tackles defensively as well. Just wish I had seen some vision of him last week!

For me Cockatoo is less of a reach at our current first round pick than Conca was. Just my opinion!

I remember that. It's good judgment... get players who excel at the 4 basics:

1. Neutral ball: strong contested ability (win ball)
2. Team in possession: they're good kicks (disposal)
3. Opposition in possession: they're competitive as hell (force neutral, or win back ball)
and...
4. Off-field: they're great characters, take direction well, and inspire those around them to work hard

Everything else is secondary to the above fundamentals.

Speed is useful, but is also secondary to the ability to 1. win the contested ball and and usually 2. have good kicks to share the ball around to the player with speed.
A good mark is useful, but is also secondary to a good kick, who is capable of making it an easier mark.
A good tackler is useful, but it also secondary to having that competitive beast nature and desire/hunger for the contest, which usually results in a full range of defensive acts

And just quietly, I think a good handballer is almost equal to a good kick. It serves the same purpose as a kick; increases ball speed, retains possession. But the ratio is lower, ideally 60% kicks 40% handballs, which is why I rate someone like Shane Edwards in the 'elite disposer' category 2.

You can't have every quality in every player. You need to prioritise traits. Speed is not one of those priorities.

And none of those traits amount to anything without an amazing 4. Off-field. The family focus and 'there's more to life' philosophy will hold us in good stead. We need some Luke Hodge/Joel Selwood level of rough leadership though IMO, as evident by the playing group's wishes for Trent to get rougher on everyone. Every elite group needs a combination of skilful leaders, heart leaders, and warrior leaders. Our best warriors are Maric and Morris.
Great post. Really well put. Easy to get sucked in by an outstanding offensive quality but really need to hit those markers otherwise you're a liability in today's football.
