I think it's time we acknowledged the true unsung hero in our club's rebuild... Fox Footy.

- The Recruit - Johann Wagner, Michael Voss, publicity for the club and Burgo
- AFL360 'nuff said
- Having Dwayne Russell in their employ. His not so subtle barracking for us during his commentary of Showdown 35 was great :p

OK **** it, here's your negatives.

- Taking on the Brisbane job with no AFL assistant experience. One of the most important things in any professional is to have a good understanding of your own capacity. This move pretty much said that Vossy has no such understanding.

- Clearing out the assistant coaches at the end of his first year. Sure they were all Leigh Matthews' guys, but they were a better brains trust than Vossy put in place. Wayne Brittain was his key recruit. Jade Rawlings another. What the ****.

- Fevola. What the **** was that. So now we know he's a shit judge of character too.

If you want a guy to be a football legend walking around the place and give a few gee-ups, Vossy will be great, but IMO he's going to be a deadweight in terms of judgement. If Kenny is Mr Tactics, great, but we're building a very Ken-dependent coaching team if we're going to rely that heavily on him - at least we knew Phil could carry the load tactically, as could Alan Richardson. We've replaced them with two Brians that were never talked about as being among the smartest players in the game. Talented or determined, sure.

Also now that we are a `success' again, sure its nice to be able to pull the big names, but the big names aren't always the best names. Richmond & Collingwood's patchy periods of poaching profiled players produced a paucity of positives. Just because we can pick anyone, it doesn't mean its easier to make the decision - its harder, you need to pick smarter, because all of a sudden `who is available' is far less important than `what do we specifically need'. If thats Voss, great, but IMO he's a character recruit, not a smarts one.

Time will tell of course, but you'd like to think he learnt some things from the experience and therefore is a better person now than then.

He won't be selecting assistants, he won't act alone in trades (which he wouldn't have done in Brisbane when selecting Fev) and perhaps accepting this rather than chasing a senior role is an admission he needs to develop personally and professionally.

As you allude, publicity wise it's a great appointment. Speculation about the success or otherwise of it in a football sense will be opinion based at present and difficult to measure until we see the influence on our midfield next year.

Hopefully he will get a new perspective from the coaches that remain, our game plan, our midfield players as well as him providing his insights so that the group is better as a result.

If Ken and KT were involved in identifying and targeting him, and did their due diligence around any concerns they may have had after the Brisbane experience then for now that's good enough for me.

OMG
that is an unbelievably great pickup by Port Adelaide so happy about this well still in shock actually! :D

Stoked with the appointment of Michael Voss as the PAFC Midfield Manager. It is a win-win for the club and Voss, imo. He'll learn so much from Hinkley and will be a strong sounding board for Ken to bounce ideas off of. I think it is a big positive that Voss has experienced being a senior coach of an AFL team, where he effectively had to learn the caper on the job, and closely critiqued the current tactics of all AFL teams with his work in the media. Both men are big on the importance of family and the development of themselves and others. I'm positive Voss will be a great mentor for our players, especially our young midfield group.
