Pick only trades happen all the time.

2013
West Coast gave 6 & 44 for 11, 31 & 49
Hawthorn gave 19 for 24 & 49

2012
North gave 38 for 41 & 47

2011
Fremantle gave an end of 1st round compensation for 20
Hawthorn gave 29, 58 & 71 for 28 & 56

2010
Collingwood gave third round compensation pick for 45
Geelong gave mid first round compensation for 15

Funnily enough, that compo pick ended up being 15. :p

No we gave away 4 spots in the first round to get back into the second round. We had to use our second round pick in order to improve the depth of our list with Cheney and Lowden. So we had no second round pick. The swapsie with Geelong then meant we were back into the second round. At least we have picks in this years draft before pick 50. We have two new players and spots for young talent to come in. If you want to compare us to our neighbours, when is their first pick? And they brought in a player who while good, has one hell of a cloud hanging over him.

2nd round picks don't win flags. Sure you might get lucky - but have a look at what the premiership lists are built around.

Thats elite talent that come through either:

A. Drafting top end talent
B. Trading in top end talent

We have done neither of this.

To use the old internet saying "all we are doing is shuffling deck chairs on the titanic".

Losing Smack, Petrenko, Graham, Porps, Johnston - doesn't hurt us all.
Losing Picks 31, 47 doesn't hurt us.
Gaining Picks 35 doesnt help us
Gaining Cheney doesnt help us

All of the above doesn't impact our best 22 at all.

Lowden may help us.

Our decision to move from #10 to #14 potentially could really hurt us if a player we rate in the top 5-6 players slides over the next month. We are messing around with our 1 chance to improve our top end talent. Its stupid. So stupid.

Ha!! Surely you jest. "Always been good" is a crazy statement!!
Look I know some people just love being negative, or are Rucci, but according to everyone else our trading and drafting record has been good. Geelong and lately Hawthorn are the measuring sticks but we have been very good by any fair measure which is why we have always had a good list without bottoming out for 5 years like most clubs. We have had some lower end first round picks that haven't worked out but that is true of every club and nearly every trade we have made has been successful. There is actually good reasons why our people like Fantasia, Rendell and Trigg get head hunted by other clubs, as unpopular as that fact might be to most people on here.

Anyway I hope we never take the tanking road and keep putting up a competitive team every year. I am fully aware how difficult that is in an artificially levelled playing field and so will continue to be happy with our approach as long as we keep getting it right.

What in the hell were West Coast thinking. Dropping from 6 to 11 is a boneheaded move!!!

I don't mind it. We needed a Lowden type player quite badly as back up. He's also young enough and has potential to be a long term ruckman long after Jacobs is gone.

Cheney is an okay defender who could probably play a role and provides depth. Thought he performed alright this year.

Not a great deal of difference between 10 and 20 this year apparently.

Meh, we filled a need and dropped a few places in the draft.

Apparently we are into Petrenko for the PSD

Whats wrong with him and what is ok with him
Good: speed, endeavour, good as a defensive forward to shut down damaging HBF'ers, can kick some really good goals.
Bad: not flash with the ball at times and misses some deadset howlers. Not a very polished player, panics at times.

Might just need a change of ends, play as a defender.

If you're an 'expert', why aren't you in charge then?

We have terrible depth atm. Lowden, Cheney and the 2nd rounder might not be great, but they help depth. Is Hawthorn great because of their 22? Or are they great because of that + the fact they can lose Mitchell, Hodge, Lake, McEvoy etc to injuries, slot in depth players and not miss a beat?

Depth helps, especially for a club like us.

Just a question, what was the reaction when we got Lynch and Jenkins? I reckon Lynch got called a Spud by a few people. I know a few people cracked it when we drafted Matt Crouch but I am happy with that pick up.
We need depth and talent.
And it's not like the Hawks were pushing Lowden out. They see something in him. Maybe not a superstar but talented.

I understand the swap of picks because we need to build up our depth. And the crows are confident in this draft to do that.

But they have put pressure on themselves in the swap, they must get 14 right. If they get it wrong, we have the right to be negative and disappointed. But we won't know how will we did til this time next year.

Pros: Fast, a bit of a battering ram, can kick a freakish goal
Cons: Average kick, struggles with set shots, not really a natural ball winner

Would recommend trying him in defence if you get him.

Im holding my breath till draft day before passing judgement.

What in the hell were West Coast thinking. Dropping from 6 to 11 is a boneheaded move!!!

Except you haven't looked at the circumstances.

6. Collingwood
7. Brisbane
8. Father Son Locked in
9. Melbourne
10. Collingwood.

You would absolutely assume that to make that trade - Collingwood would agree not to take West Coasts chosen target at both pick 6 and pick 10. So you have therefore removed two picks. Pick 8 was locked in for a father son.

So West Coast actually gained pick 31 for just giving up 2 spots and still secured Dom Sheed who everyone knew they were after.

That was smart trading because they lost 2 spots in the draft, secured what they wanted and got pick 31.

Us on the other hand lost 4 spots and all we gained was a 12 spot bump in the lottery part of the draft. That is a bonehead move.

Doesn't have a tank.

But will put his body on the line. Puts a lot of pressure on the ball carrier. With a full preseason he should be good to go, IF he's played as a small defender.

He shits his pants in front of goals. Nerves also get the better of him as a set shot. But does help lock the ball in the fwd line.

Betts is a more complete player in this regard. Charlie Cameron really does take his role away completely.

If he is played correctly he'll add something.
