Amazing coincidences in football

so quickly you can plumb the depths of history for amazing coincidences

Thanks GG, I really like football history and statistics. Here's a few more connected with my earlier posts, although not Claremont:

1980 - Four black & white teams make the Grand Finals, Collingwood in the VFL against Richmond, Swan Districts against South Fremantle in the WAFL, Port Adelaide against Norwood in the SANFL and Brunswick Magpies against the Yarraville Eagles in VFA Division 2.
Port Adelaide and Brunswick defeat Norwood and Yarraville, but Collingwood and Swan Districts might have wished for red & blue GF opponents in Melbourne & West Perth like their black & white counterparts in the SANFL & VFA. Collingwood were demolished by Richmond in the VFL, and South Fremantle inflicted a similar thrashing on Swan Districts in the WAFL.

1960 - John F Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon to win the US Presidential election and no man has visited space. Melbourne start the decade by heading the ladder and crush Collingwood in the Grand Final, while Richmond finishes last by a long way.
1969 - Richard Nixon takes the oath of office after winning the 1968 US presidential election, and Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins visit the Moon. Richmond finish the decade with the 1969 premiership, while Melbourne finish last by 3 games.

Four AFL/VFL Grand Finals have finished with a margin the same as the year. These are 1913 Fitzroy d. St Kilda by 13 points; 1929 Collingwood d Richmond by 29 points; 1930 Collingwood d Geelong by 30 points & 1983 Hawthorn thrash Essendon by 83 points.

Here are some interesting coincidences with AFL teams and historical events:

Carlton played in the Grand Final in the two years Halley's Comet was visible from Earth in the 20th Century - 1910 & 1986 - and lost both Grand Finals to Collingwood and Hawthorn respectively.

Collingwood has featured in the Grand Final in every year there has been a change in English Monarch; 1901 (Victoria - Edward VII); 1910 (Edward VII to George V); 1936 (George V - Edward VIII - George VI) and 1952 (George VI - Elizabeth II). The Magpies won when only Kings were involved in 1910 & 1936 over Carlton and the Swans respectively, but lost when a Queen was involved in 1901 to Essendon & 1952 to Geelong.

Essendon won the premiership the year the Titanic sank (1912), and won it again in 1985 when the wreck was discovered in the North Atlantic.

Hawthorn won the premiership Bob Hawke became Prime Minister in 1983, and won it again when he left office in 1991.

Carlton defeated South Melbourne in the 1914 Grand Final when World War I commenced, and again defeated the Swans in 1945, the end of World War 2. The Swans had won the 1918 Grand Final in the year the First World War ended by beating Collingwood, while Melbourne trounced Collingwood in the 1939 Grand Final when World War 2 commenced..

Melbourne have a liking for Olympic years, winning premierships in 1900, 1940 (cancelled due to WW2), 1948, 1956, 1960 & 1964. The Dees only two GF appearances since 1964 have come in Olympic years; 1988 & 2000.

North Melbourne seem to win premierships when the Liberals win in Federal Politics. In 1975, North won its first flag when Malcolm Fraser became PM after the dismissal of the Whitlam Government. The Kangaroos won again in 1977 when the Fraser Government won the election, then again in 1996 when John Howard and the Liberals won power. They also won in 1999, which was originally the date for the next election, which was held in 1998 after a double dissolution.

Adding to the Collingwood and royals, Collingwood played in a Grand Final in 2011.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were married in 2011.

Yes, and Collingwood were beaten pretty badly by the Geelong Cats. Thirty years earlier, the Magpies also lost the 1981 Grand Final to the Blues, the year Prince Charles married Diana Spencer.

Robbie Tarrant is #25. Ben Brown is #50. 25 x 2 = 50 and, coincidentally, Brown has already produced twice the output Tarrant ever has.

What amazing coincidences have there been in football?

How about this one:

In 1993, Essendon and Carlton play a draw. A Carlton player wearing number 4, has a shot with the scores level, and is unable to register a score.

In 2014, Essendon and Carlton play a draw. A Carlton player wearing number 4, has a shot with the scores level, and is unable to register a score.

Anyone beat that?

how do you even know that?

2007 Geelong loses second last home and away game, goes on to win premiership.
2009 Geelong loses second last home and away game, goes on to win premiership.
2011 Geelong loses second last home and away game, goes on to win premiership.
2014 Geelong loses second last home and away game,

gets bundled out of finals in straight sets.
