Mega Thread News of the Day / Interesting Articles & Links

Remove this Banner Ad

Seems we have quite a few threads popping up with links to news articles with limited content actually written in the OP, so no genuine discussion or view points eventuates.

Here begins a mega thread where you can dump links to articles you think people may find interesting but you don't think are worthy of a genuine debate or discussion or where you feel people won't have differing view points worthy of an entire discussion thread.

Suicide is a frequent cause of death in people diagnosed with “schizophrenia.” These patients generally receive neuroleptics, which have an intrinsic suicidal effect. There are placebo studies, epidemiological surveys, first-hand reports, self-experiments and clinical research providing evidence about neuroleptic-caused depression and suicidality. Publications about the suicidal effects of neuroleptics – currently taboo – and suicide registers might reduce suicidality in “schizophrenics.”

In 2011, these researchers, led by the former editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, Nancy Andreasen, reported follow-up data for their study of 211 patients diagnosed for the first time with an episode of ‘schizophrenia’. They found a strong correlation between the level of antipsychotic treatment someone had taken over the course of the follow-up period, and the amount of shrinkage of brain matter as measured by repeated MRI scans. The group concluded that “antipsychotics have a subtle but measurable influence on brain tissue loss”

Tardive dyskinesia is a disorder caused mainly by antipsychotic (neuroleptic) drugs, including the newer so-called atypical drugs like Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Abilify, and Invega. The abnormal movements can afflict any muscle group that is partially under voluntary control including the face, mouth, tongue, neck, shoulders, torso, limbs hands and feet, as well as the muscles of breathing, speech and swallowing. The variant tardive dystonia involves painful muscle spasms and the variant tardive akathisia involving inner agitation that drives the person to move his body for relief. Tardive akathisia can feel like torture.

Antipsychotic drugs, which have been mass produced in the last decade and prescribed like candy, are looked to as the mood “cure all.” What researchers are realizing, though, is that these medicines are actually more like science experiments on the brain, created by chemists and peddled by drug dealing giants who have no clue how each individual’s mind may react to the mind altering effects their drugs impose.

At about the same time, pharmaceutical industry executives, wide-eyed at having sensed an opportunity, began propounding the notion that, much like the common cold, "mental illness" was epidemic and curable.

That commercial opportunism - the drug companies' relentless marketing to physicians and lay people - along with slackened diagnostic criteria is central to Edward Shorter's argument in How Everyone Became Depressed.

In a statement to a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 4, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment of Punishment called for a ban on forced psychiatric interventions including forced drugging, shock, psychosurgery, restraint and seclusion, and for repeal of laws that allow compulsory mental health treatment and deprivation of liberty based on disability, including when it is motivated by “protection of the person or others.”

What is "On Humour" like - is there anything more turgid than philosophical tracts on humour?

found this to be an alternative read http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/...147788128?nk=51fae4aca48e4c9cadda6e4566221f8c

It's not everyday you see behavior like this in the media unless Miley Cyrus is having another Coke withdrawal on twitter. I'm surprised such a misanthropic spitting ******* is even allowed near a tabloid of all things. He would have to be the most alienated out of touch shittest bloke of them all yet we respond to this by giving him a public voice and look what we get for it. This article.
