Tabs is still green - his development will come with time. Looking back on where he was two years ago, he's obviously come a long way.

I remember us complaining that his hands were too hard when marking on the lead - he fixed that. I also remember when we were saying he was too lightly built to play as a true KPF - he fixed that as well.

And a few of us have intimated here that he gets a bit lost in the big games - and it's true, he does... but to be fair to Tabs, he's only played in a tiny handful of intense, contested AFL games like that one was, and with time he will fix that too. Suban used to drift out of these kinds of games, and NEVER used to kick with his right under any circumstances, but even he is improving.

I think we should keep playing Tabs - he just needs to build up more flight-hours.

Yeah, last quarter finishing has seemed like an Achilles hell for a while now. I think we tried the bolded because we've been burned in the past when taking potshots from 50 and we lament how our players never "lower their vision", but honestly I'd probably prefer them to back themselves in from that range or back in our now taller forward line to take a grab close to the square than try dinky 15-20 metre kicks in heavy congestion.

Tonight it wasn't even heavy congestion in the last quarter, Sydney had the entirety of their team save Franklin parked in our defensive 50, very difficult to pull off passes in those circumstances unless you're Hill or Walters; neither of whom got nearly enough of the footy in dangerous areas.

yeah , the congestion made it very tough. We could have potted the game earlier in the last when Danyle found himself with time on the 50 mtr line. He should have drilled that goal like he has been doing this year but it was a bloody floater. That seemed the answer. Kick them from outside 50.

Especially when Zac Dawson returns; We will be able to use Clancee differently.
I said this in the ibbotson thread but do we really want Dawson back in the team if the current back 6 aren't injured. At the moment all 6 backs are good and creative with disposal. Dawson is a liability in this sense similar to Crowley and we have been much more attacking across the field as a consequence. I cringe every time the ball is going down to Dawson especially in a one on one and I don't see why we need to play 3 talks back in defense when most teams don't have 3 big talls fwd.

The only reason why I would play Dawson is to rest Luke that's it.

Being a pr0n star, I wouldn't know any better myself and we'll never know whether it would have been better to leave Tabs on but it seemed like arresting Sydney's dominance might have been a priority at that time. The Boss is a big believer in it being won or lost in the midfield and at the time he made that sub, it's indesptuable that we were getting decimated therein. I think he felt he needed that extra body and gut running capacity at that time.

Fair enough. No issue bringing on the Gu, but maybe Clarke should have gone off then. Didn't provide much up forward or in ruck, whereas Tabs was.

As fans , we are also going to have a lot of frustration with the development of Taberner.
It is going to be tough with Tabs and he is probably set to make way next week for Ballantyne.
Not a good game for Tabs against Sydney.

How was it not? He provided a target and pressure, and the forward line was really top-notch in the first half.

Kicked a winning score in a half, without Barlow or Neale contributing across the midfield line, and working against a top 4 opposition defence.

He would likely kick 3 or 4 next week.

Many teams are moving that way, with the 3rd being a Mitch Clark or Jesse White type. Ibbo can play that role, so can Silvagni. But Dawson on one of the big 2 can maybe free up to MJ or Ibbo to roam and rip apart through half back.

But agree with broader point, this is all-star level defense from our back 6 currently. No need to change willy nilly.

It's easy to write off Tabs' game because he was subbed and we got back into the game afterwards, but I think he actually played really well, it was just a good tactical decision to sub him off.
That first 1/2 the way he & Pav played off each other was beautiful. In the 3rd the ball was no where near our forwards, so he just needs to learn to play up the ground & to run it if we get into that kind of position again.

The third man up in the stoppages didn't work last night, especially in the third when we continued to get that third up and Sydney would clear it easily. The move of Reid to the midfield really did make a difference for Sydney as well, was some great coaching by Sydney. Both teams very evenly matched.

Great result to be 4-0 so far, now time to build on it.
Agree about the 3rd man up. Mundy seemed more intent on just getting his fist to the ball than trying to find a man with the tap. It also seems to me that all good forward pockets have aspirations of becoming mid fielders. I think that we need to rotate players through the mid field and sonny is up to the task but with ballas missing I think I'd like to have seen him playing closer to goal.

Tabs was the right choice to be subbed out last night.
Who else do you think should make way for Ballas ?
A tall for a small is the way to use a sub. However when Tabs is in the side he draws a defender away from Pav. Would much prefer we dropped De Boer or Suban. Even though they played well.

What did it say ? Was it Cellarbrations the booze retailer ?

Yeah - Freo's was just "Lest We Forget". Simple, but respectful.

Theirs was "Cellarbrations - for all your celebration needs" and then half a dozen Cellarbrations logos.

Whores.
That should cop a please explain from the AFL which in itself would be gross hypocrisy.

Biggest worry for me was we couldn't stop the run when it came, 7 goals straight. That's 2 weeks in a row now, and Ross would want to sort that out quickly.

I know teams are always going to get momentum but we cant afford to let teams kick 5 - 6 unanswered goals.

The biggest issue for me with that was not settling it down. After 3-4 goals Sydney goals in a row we were still trying to to play on quickly up the middle. I appreciate it's something we're looking to do to score, but there are times when perhaps chipping it around for a bit wouldn't be a bad idea.

No better training than trying it on against the best sides. They'll learn and get better for their efforts after reviewing the game.

I'm sure, regardless of what they day to the media, once a big lead like that is on the board some experimentation and tactics are tried.

Ross isn't silly. We're preparing ourselves for the big show.

To be fair to the Sydney cheer squad, the reverse side of their banner (which faced us in 313) was their version of an Anzac tribute - albeit a very oblique one which I can't remember the exact wording of...something about "standing tall" and "fall".

Because we were facing the reverse of the Freo banner, all I heard was the elderly lady to my left droning on and on about how disrespectful it was to just have "Congratulations Lachie Neale - 50 Games" on our banner...

Again, we missed Ballantyne. With Walters looking either proppy or running around in the midfield, we lacked any sort of crumbing forwards when the ball did go to ground.

Anyone else pissed off that Ballas got himself rubbed out again, happens regularly now. Cost us the North game at subi last year imo.

Has anyone seen/heard what happened to Pav in the first? Got assessed for concussion. Looked like he copped something in the moosh behind play but didn't remonstrate so perhaps accidental if such a thing exists off the play. I did see the ump walking by him on the telecast during the quarter time break perhaps quietly enquiring on what happened.

I looked over just as pav went down but didn't see what happened. Whatever it was he was with ted Richards at the time with no one else near. Wouldn't surprised to find they'll go over the tape to find out what happened. He was pissing blood from his nose.

From where I sit the thing I take out of last night is that we are not the perfect side and we have big areas of improvement yet despite that, we have made the best start to a season in our history! It's a long season so we can develop and get better, I want us to be playing our best footy in October!
