James Aish

Dunno what you guys are on.

Obviously we are going to be very into Aish. We'll have talked, and will be talking to him + his management.
Secondarily obviously, so would other clubs. E.g. Carlton. Port too probably.
Thirdarily obviously, a manager's job is to get the best deal for his client. So you talk to everyone and get the best deal.

We're acting like things should be done and dusted already.

When he will be 24 or 25 you mean? Player don't look at a club today, they look at what a club might become tomorrow.

right in his prime.

how far away are we do you think we are?

Carlton are in shambles their list management is completely up shit creek. Dogs and Saints are closer to a flag in my eyes than the Blues. They have recruited poorly and traded terribly.

We will make the 8 this year imo.

We are a premiership chance in 2018, Carlton are no chance till at least 2020 and thats being conservative. Depends a lot on injuries and keeping players and acquiring talent to make up for the Tippett sanctions.

Keeping Danger and recruiting Aish will go a long way towards us being a premiership contender.

It does sound like a good year to have a first round pick if that is true. Bicks might be able to help out with the strength of this years crop. The recruiters always bang on about how you draft for talent, not need with early picks (although need must come into it to some degree). I think the same applies for drafting players after only 2 seasons. If the drafts are anywhere near comparable for quality, then trading our first round pick for Aish would be maximising the talent we can get with that pick. Even if we threw in our second rounder I think that is a pretty good deal. I agree that we probably need another Brodie Smith or a KPF more than Aish but it is not like Aish is another inside mid with below average skills, we do also need a player like him.
Yes they do say get the best available, no a need when it comes to early picks which I'm all for. But, what if the best available is the type of player we need a AND turns out to be better than aish. I see where you are coming from and I'm not against getting aish. I just don't want to miss out on someone better and more suited for something that I don't feel is a pressing need.

This is nothing but a positive I reckon we haven't heard much. It's obvious we would be into him, no doubt at all whatsoever. Just because our Ceo and list managers aren't parading around like proud peacocks backs up what the AFC have been trying to do in the last 6 months. Keep everything in house and only comment on things when it has been announced. Its not different with sydney and franklin, only in the last 2 days did anyone suggest he was going up there. Its better for clubs wanting to attract a player to keep it quiet and work it out behind closed doors. The other benefit with not playing it out in the media, if it doesn't work out we can then say we were never seriously interested :D

We are massively into him but we do things differently these days , lets see if it comes up trumps
Yeah, these things that don't seem to add up would make you think that we are into him big time. The only logical thing would be that he wants to come home and and we are into him.
If it turns out that we wernt and he went somewhere like Carlton I would be both dumbfounded and pissed off.

Do you honestly think Roo wouldn't be all over this? Who's his neighbour again? Roo used to play kick to kick with James on the street FFS. Have a little faith in our overlord.

It's always a risk trading early picks because you are setting yourself up criticism - a bit like the downgrading pick 10 pick last year. The safest option (as far as avoiding criticism goes) would be to take our picks to the draft and get the best available kid. We might land a KPF or an outside mid with some real pace which would be great but I think it is unlikely that the player taken at 12 this year will have more talent than the player taken at 7 two years ago.

Personally, I'd rather take the risk for a player we are in desperate need of right now, than trade what would possibly be more than just a pick for aish. We might be able to wait for aish to become a free agent and get him for nothing one day. But like I said early. I'm not against getting him, just not sure it's the best way to spend our first pick. I'll place my trust in the crowd recruiting team.

I can certiaily see where you are coming from. I am still in the get Aish camp though.

The Aish thing just doesnt seem right for some reason.
1. Everyone would think that our club would be into him like crazy. He is talent and we need his type of outside skills. Also remember we were crazy about him as a jr and tried to see if we could get him fs. So why are all the reports saying we havent shown much interest? Why wouldnt we want an "Aish" to play for the club? Somethings not right here.
2. Why would Aish want to leave Brisbane just to end up in another state? He isnt very media happy, so it has nothing to do with trying to get him on the footy show etc. So why would he want to go to Victoria? You would think he would want to come home. Again, doesnt make sence.
3. Cant be about money because Brisbane has already offered him a three year deal for 1.2 mill. Very few kids in their 3rd year are on that coin. Crouch, Wines, Omera etc are not on that money yet. So whats it about?
I just dont know.

We would be into him, the media get's their information from his manager, when he tells them we aren't really trying to get him, it's like a used car salesman saying "you mustn't really want this car if that is the offer you are making me", he's trying to make the AFC think, or letting them know there is competition.

Why would he want to go to melbourne? If I was in his shoes at his age, and had a club that had a couple of my best mates playing there, I would probably choose to go to that club rather than my home town club where I don't know the players very well. I don't know who his mates are and if that is the case though.

dwayne russell said on 5aa that port doesn't have the cap space to make a play for Aish even if they wanted to.

They couldn't possibly have. They've recruited in recent years Monfries, White, Polec and Ryder and have a host of players that would demand decent coin

Thats kinda my point. The fact that we are so quiet with him makes you kinds think he is coming here. The story in the public of us not been into him and him wanting to go to Victoria is 180 degrees from what should be happening.

they have also got some young players coming out of contract they will have to give a pay raise to.

plus the first lot of port power pioneers who signed on after the dredge of 2008-2012

Depends how close to a flag you are and if his role is a weakness in your best 22. If he's overpaid it's not by too much.
His best role is lead ruck - has never been a consistent goal kicker.
The problem is Lobbe also does his best work when he rucks 90% of the game so Ryder will have to play forward which is not his strength. Its also making Westhoff ineffective and they seem to have lost the speed and run that won them so many games last year with the new structure. Interesting dilemma for the master coach.
