I like most people would have been SHOCKED by the crowd of 12,400 to the NM V Freo game.

I didn't think North had that many supoorters?

It's about average for Hawthorn v Freo as well.

Interesting that the sun says the break even point at the 'G' is about 24,000. It seems to be similar at docklands.

I heard Plympton say the other day that the saints made money at waverley whenever the crowd got bigger than 14,000, which is a good crowd against some interstate sides.

So is Docklands the biggest mistake ever ? It was supposed to be cheaper to run than the MCG. Is it just the world's biggest TV studio ? It's very pleasant to be there, but can we really afford it ?

The Kangaroos should Beg not to play on Mothersday next year, especially against some rubbish interstate club.

I think some people at League Head Office just like to embarrass us, they can't do it on the football field, so they try other places. Last year we had to play Adelaide on a wintery Mothersday. I think just under 20,000 that day.

Even Essendon drew crap yesterday give Mothersday the heave ho, or let Collingwood play Essendon, so that normal people could stay at home with their Mum.

A good idea in future would be to have NO games on Mothers Day at all.

The crowds are disappointing for all fixtures lets schedule all the games for Friday night, Saturady arvo and Saturday night and leave the Mothers Day Sunday free for people who would rather have lunch with Mum.

And no Monday games either !

Tonights roll-up for Melb v Lions is sure to another embarassment.

The break even point for Colonial Stadium is a crowd of around 15 000 to 20 000. Well, that is what I have heard.

North have played on Mothers Day several times against non victorian teams resulting in small crowds. On this particular Mother's Day the game was also live on Optus. Maybe if the game was not live on T.V another 10,000 people would have attended. I noticed also that Port are attracting small crowds for a club that has a rather large following. It is refreshing that most people who have posted here have offered a balanced point of view in relation to this topic. Just before I depart, Well done to all the Essendon supporters who went to Collo stadium yesterday to support your team.

Maybe just maybe, people have other priorities on Mothers Day, strange that. Footy aint everthing guys.
It wouldnt matter who was playing yesterday, we had other more important things to do. I can go to the footy next week.

Footy is more important than Mum (she understands that) She can see us in the off season (when crickets not on !!) good to see the reaminder of the North supporters (Approx 500) went to see Mum .

That game against the dockers should have been played in Sydney, they would have got about the same crowd and more TV exposure.

You have to take into considertion the shocking weather, if the day had have been fine up to 20,000 would have attended

So much for the Monday night game being an embarassment. 25,000 on a MONDAY NIGHT was a very good crowd. I bet North wouldn't be able to do that. That is why Melbourne is safe, because they actually have supporters. It's just a shame that so many of them are bandwagon supporters. When North are going well, they still get small crowds to their games.

The reason Port are drawing poor crowds is because their supporters are frontrunners.

They spend all their time telling you what great supporters they are but now with their side doing crap we see the truth.

At this rate by the end of the year they will be lucky to get 10,000 at a home game.

I was wondering what the Melbourne Membership figures are at the momemt. I mean members of the football club not the cricket ground ? Essendon and other such clubs can brag about crowds, however the gutnicks are better known for their skiing skills. You should do a comparion over the past five years or so and find out if the Kangaroos or the gutnicks got more people to their games.

Someone suggested low drawing games (freo v any victorian team in Victoria) be moved to sydney, to use up the contracted games there

I have a more elegant solution - Move Freo lock stock and Barrel to sydney !

The 'experiment' has been a failure so far I would suggest. What I would hate to see is a traditional Melbourne club go to the wall while these jokers are still there, struggling to get 20,000 to a game, struggling for wins, players and revenue and still the football public couldn't care less about them.

Tragedy ? - don't laugh it could happen ...

And while we are at it - Port can go too !

25,000 - odd was a good crowd for a Monday night Demons v Lions game.
I was pleasantly surprised by that one, does it mean Demons fans have suddenly started to like Colonial Stadium now ? Is Colonial just a better place to go and watch footy nowadays ?

25,000 last night was a good crowd for Melbourne-Brisbane as was 34,000 for Collingwood-Freo a couple of weeks ago.

Does this mean there might be a place for Monday night football?

I hope not but the figures are pretty good.

Interesting to note that the attendance for the Dogs V Sydney game was subsequently ammended to 18,500.

This was a game played in Sydney with the approval of the Sydney hierarchy (??), offered to Sydney members as part of their membership package and promoted by the Swans.

Do we assume from this that Sydney people are Swans supporters who just aren't interested in supporting any other team in Sydney?

Absolutely goddam dead right Jenney !

Sydney people are not interested in attending Footy games at all unless it is the Swans and only then they will go only if the Swans are playing well and winning.

Thats why it is just so dumb for certain Melbourne presidents to think they can just fly in, run around, then take the money and fly out again. There is just not enough support out there for the game to make this a reasonable proposition.

If any clubs down there in Melbourne want to make money out of Sydney, then you have to do it the hard way like the Swans have for the last 18 years.

It takes committmet at the ground level to establish yourselves and it also takes lotsa money and lotsa time and you have to do all the hard things like promote the game at ground level in schools and local communities etc.

At least the Kangaroos have recognised this and are acting accordingly.

Sundays pathetic crowd of 18,000 shoould serve as a warning to Miller, Smorgon, McGuire et al that there is most certainly no pot of gold in Sydney.

pls do not take the crowd figures at Colonial seriously.The ground holds 50,000(with alot of those limited veiwing)and if the ground was 1/2 full (25,000) for Melb-Bris,I'll give up.Remember that means every 2nd seat was taken;sorry but it wasn't so.

It holds 50,000 (with alot of those limited viewing) If there were 25,000 at Melb/Bris,it means the ground was 1/2 full...........let me tell you,it was not the case.The crowd should have read 15-16,000.

The only reason why Melbourne & Brisbane got 25,000 on a Monday night, was because all kids got in for free, as well as got a free pie & coke. It was promoted by Garry Lyon and Gerard Healy on 3AW as 'the world's biggest pie night'...
