Carlton chief Steven Trigg says Blues not in dire situation despite $2 million loss

CARLTON is facing a significant challenge as it stares down the barrel of a $2 million loss this year, chief executive Steven Trigg says.

The predicted loss is set to be one of the Blues’ biggest in the club’s history, with Trigg admitting that the club is facing hurdles as it looks to move its reliance away from donations from some of Melbourne’s wealthiest families — including that of late Visy boss Richard Pratt.

He insisted the situation is anything but “dire”, despite the loss growing on the $1.6 million one recorded in 2014, and has commended the support of the club’s members in what was a trying 2015 both on and off the field with the team finishing at the bottom of the ladder with just four wins.

Blues in the red: Carlton to post $2 million loss, break debt ceiling

Carlton will post one of the biggest financial losses in the club's history, and are expected to be $2 million in the red after notching just four wins for the 2015 season.

The result follows a $1.6 million loss for the 2014 season, but of more concern to the Blues is the fact they are in danger of breaching a "debt ceiling" imposed by the AFL, which underwrites a maximum $5 million Westpac overdraft for every club in the competition. According to the most recent accounts, Carlton have overdrawn that facility.

Blues president Mark LoGiudice has briefed influential club figures in the past month on the significant trading loss and debt issues.

Melbourne Demons set to record stronger profit this year
Not so long ago an AFL basket case, the Melbourne Football Club will record another strong profit this year and buck the trend of mounting debt that continues to spread across the competition.

While still battling to attract strong attendances and membership numbers throughout another disappointing on-field season, the Demons are expected to announce a profit of close to $500,000, after finishing in the black in 2014 to the tune of $300,000.

In what has emerged as a positive example of head-office intervention, it is now two years since the AFL brought in former Essendon CEO and AFL Victoria chairman Peter Jackson to run the club.

At the end of 2013 the Demons lost more than $3 million, despite a special AFL $1.45 million lifeline.

Why would clubs drip feed profitability? :p

Most clubs have to release the info at a certain date (often related to their AGM, but sometimes statutory), but as you'd expect, they'll have the details together a while before that. By spreading the news over a longer period (especially a quiet AFL media time like now) gets your club mentioned more often, which, in theory, keeps sponsors happy and has the potential of attracting more members. In other words, the usual PR crap.

Looks like Richmond have a profit of ~$500K

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/richmond-tigers-record-500000-profit-20151112-gkxopx.html

Other notable factoids from the article.

Richmond contributed $200K to the equalisation fund.
Carlton ending the gate sharing agreement cost ~$300K this year (especially bad news for Carlton...Their loss was with the 'extra' 300K, which they wont get next year).
Richmond are about 8th on football department spending (up from 10th), and are pushing the cap.
Profit down from $1.3M last year, with the implication being that this was largely due to more spending ('investment') on football dept and the like.

Both Adelaide and Port Adelaide record profit, first time both in black since 2007

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport...black-since-2007/story-fnia6ojc-1227606712533

ADELAIDE Oval’s new stadium deal — that was to pump an extra $3.1 million to the Crows and Power this year — has achieved its first win on the AFL clubs’ balance sheets.

For the first time since 2007, both the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs will post profits.

This is an extraordinary turnaround for the Power after reporting a $2.5 million loss last year. Port Adelaide has not been in the black on its profit-and-loss statements since reporting a $927,000 surplus in its 2007 AFL grand final season.

And the Crows — who lost $408,000 — will declare a modest profit despite playing only 10 home games at Adelaide Oval this year. All budgets were met at West Lakes despite the Crows taking a financial hit in cancelling its home clash with Geelong on July 5, two days after the death of senior coach Phil Walsh.

Isn't a real profit at all when they have $7 million coming in from gambling.

a) Yes it is. It's legally acquired money that goes towards the operations of the football club.

b) A sizable chunk of 'Gaming and social' would actually be the social club...Nice big rooms at Punt road oval, just next to the MCG for activities before and after every game there (even better when the VFL team plays), and membership to the Maurice Rioli club (as the social club is called) isn't exactly cheap either. Richmond makes a nice bit of coin out of that.

You need to understand many clubs have a business model based around pokies. The community funding requirements included in the original Vic legislation are directed to the community aka the footy club.

This has also been tightened

Clubs have a mandatory community contribution they need to make as a proportion of their pokie revenue, and this cannot be footy dept related (as some clubs initially did)

Essendon 2015 Financial Result
November 20, 2015 6:00 PM

Essendon Football Club has recorded a net loss of $1,336,354 for the 2015 financial year.

CEO, Xavier Campbell, said despite the loss, the Club was in a strong financial position.

“Our financial loss this year is the result of a number of unforeseen costs to the business,” Campbell said.

“The loss includes a combination of abnormal costs associated with the ASADA/WADA issue and the impact of a disappointing season on the field.”

“Pleasingly, despite the unique circumstances we have faced this year, we remain in a strong financial position.”

Campbell said the Club’s cash flow, return from its venues, and record membership made for a positive outlook in 2016.

“Importantly, we have a healthy cash profit through operations of nearly two million dollars,” Campbell said

Key Points of 2015 Financial Result

Net Assets: $37,278,974

Total Revenue: $58,202,992

Earnings before depreciation and amortisation (cash profit): $1,958,537

Membership Tally: 60,819 (New Club record)

Brisbanes annual report is out with absolutely no media coverage - a loss of $681,053. It doesnt look like much, but its their best result in years.

brisbane2015.png

Considering their year that's a fantastic result

a 3 million increase in AFL distributions - probably the highest behind GWS - is likely the reason though.

I was more thinking their membership and Corp revenues. They have had a year from hell and to even have a slight increase is a top effort

Also, $2.6M more owing in 'trade payables' to the AFL that the AFL declines to collect...

A big improvement in the bottom line, but when you're $9M in the red, anything short of a profit is a serious concern.

edited to add.

I always find the 'going concern' note in such reports well worth reading, Brisbane's is quite illuminating, and includes this...

"The Company’s current Trade and other payables include an
amount of $8,813,730 owing to the AFL. Whilst this debt is payable
on demand by the AFL the Company expects that the AFL will
continue to support the Company and will not demand repayment if
the Company does not have sufficient available funds to pay;"

Well they have had several years of hell and in house board fighting. Although the increases in corporate, sales and merchandise is a good signs when you consider the year the qld sides have had in the NRL with both the broncos and cowboys both making the grand final.

Mod edit: keep it civil in here

Illuminating or very, very familiar to a Tigers fan - yes, this year will be the first time in the recent past the Tiges figures did not have a similar note (exactly when was it the AFL guarantee was released).
Poor form but no doubt you will raise this issue for every one of the clubs 'in the same boat' e.g the Bombers.
