of course it's enough proof if you do believe they took a canon 1200D up there and took a few happy snaps. but of course the model of camera is relevant, perhaps not to that story directly although still it is an important factor. i wonder if space or photography nuts care what camera they took those insanely high res photos with?

the photos are cool if they are photos but it's just hard to begin taking something seriously when it starts with NASA...!
To what end is the conspiracy to deny the earth is flat? What benefit is there to hiding this from us?

It's pretty convincing. They're amazing photos and to suggest that even those are faked is stretching things a bit.

the same reason everything is supposedly hidden i guess, to keep the powerful wealthy and the people mere citizens of their world. if you were to say there is some magnificent hoax then you'd say it was a good one wouldn't you, because overall people across the earth probably waste the most time and energy and money on space exploration. if everything is about keeping us occupied until we leave this existence, the possibility of extra terrestrials is the classic distraction from living your life. sorry that wasn't really about the earth being flat or round but like everything in this sub-forum it is all connected. that's why they're all lumped as conspiracies

Except I've provided photos of it as round.

but you got them from space.com
Why, if you watch a boat sail off past the horizon, with binoculars, do you watch it seem to sink? As it disappears, from bottom to top?

This is something you can observe yourself.
Is this enough proof that the world is at least slightly curved?

What about the fact, that gravity acts towards the center of a mass?
Or the fact that as the distance from the center increases, the force on the object decreases? Therefore there should be a noticeable change at sea level, around the world, for someone's weight?

Or that the moon orbits us?

Or that the sun is hitting somewhere on Earth, 24/7. Barring an eclipse?

Does any of that give you enough evidence that the world isn't flat?

But how does it keep people wealthy to deny the earth is flat? That's a rather vague answer and like a lot of conspiracies of this nature, requires considerable leaps of faith and/or gross reinterpretation of evidence to make work.

In scientific fields, there's a term known as Occam's Razor. Basically, this idea is that the theory with the least number of mechanisms that fit the facts is the prevailing one. Conspiracies tend to require additional mechanisms (by definition impossible to verify) to explain the facts. Often they will start with their conclusions and try to squeeze the facts into that conclusion. Flat earth theories tend to ignore Occam's Razor and squeeze facts.

Through a flat-earther's eyes

First, a brief tour of the worldview of a flat-earther: While writing off buckets of concrete evidence that Earth is spherical, they readily accept a laundry list of propositions that some would call ludicrous. The leading flat-earther theory holds that Earth is a disc with the Arctic Circle in the center and Antarctica, a 150-foot-tall wall of ice, around the rim. NASA employees, they say, guard this ice wall to prevent people from climbing over and falling off the disc. Earth's day and night cycle is explained by positing that the sun and moon are spheres measuring 32 miles (51 kilometers) that move in circles 3,000 miles (4,828 km) above the plane of the Earth. (Stars, they say, move in a plane 3,100 miles up.) Like spotlights, these celestial spheres illuminate different portions of the planet in a 24-hour cycle. Flat-earthers believe there must also be an invisible "antimoon" that obscures the moon during lunar eclipses.

Furthermore, Earth's gravity is an illusion, they say. Objects do not accelerate downward; instead, the disc of Earth accelerates upward at 32 feet per second squared (9.8 meters per second squared), driven up by a mysterious force called dark energy. Currently, there is disagreement among flat-earthers about whether or not Einstein's theory of relativity permits Earth to accelerate upward indefinitely without the planet eventually surpassing the speed of light. (Einstein's laws apparently still hold in this alternate version of reality.)

As for what lies underneath the disc of Earth, this is unknown, but most flat-earthers believe it is composed of "rocks." [Religion and Science: 6 Visions of Earth's Core]

Then, there's the conspiracy theory: Flat-earthers believe photos of the globe are photoshopped; GPS devices are rigged to make airplane pilots thinkthey are flying in straight lines around a sphere when they are actually flying in circles above a disc. The motive for world governments' concealment of the true shape of the Earth has not been ascertained, but flat-earthers believe it is probably financial. "In a nutshell, it would logically cost much less to fake a space program than to actually have one, so those in on the Conspiracy profit from the funding NASA and other space agencies receive from the government," the flat-earther website's FAQ page explains.

have you ever done any sailing? i've done a melbourne to hobart, you can see a boat sail 'over the horizon', pull out binoculars, and bring the whole thing hull, mast, sails back 'over the horizon'. the 'over the horizon' meme is just bad evidence.

this is a pretty legit looking 110,000ft elevation showing not much resembling a ball earth, we can all produce random stuff to support whatever:

i've pretty much decided that - as most of humanity in the past has - you can't really know for sure what you live on. anything else is hubris.

i detest vice but this was a pretty good article here

Flat earth is fascinating because in an era where so much of the world is disenchanting and so much of social existence is already a given—you will have your job, you will have your life, you will be exploited, and then you will die—there are people who can dream the Earth itself into a different shape. It's flat.

i've tried to re-iterate a few times what this thread is about. it isn't me sitting here saying the earth is flat, it's about the ever-growing conspiracy theory that the earth is flat. i'm not here to argue with you dorks. i can probably debunk the flat earth better than any of you, and that is the stars appearing to orbit a southern celestial pole in australia and a northern one in europe.

I watched it. What exactly am I missing?

:drunk:

yeah, don't bother addressing your bullshit evidence being btfo.
I put up an obvious list.
You ignored all of it, and just said that watching something disappear over the horizon is a "meme".
Then you were just an aggressive ******* to other posters.
And you gave yourself the world's biggest pat on the back... for no reason.

i didn't bother with the rest because you proved yourself a fool in the first point. go down to the pier, watch a boat go 'over the horizon' then take out your binoculars and lo and behold the earth magically un-curves itself and the boat comes back up on top of the horizon again. it's just a shit proof of any cosmological model and i thought i'd call you out on it.

Oh well, you've got time to go back and bother now, right?

And I think you're confusing your long distance sight, with actual evidence that the world is at least curved...
If the boat is big enough, you can easily watch it seemingly sink out of view.

lol watch the video you moron. or take a class in cinematography or something.
I don't need to watch a video of a camera reaching high altitude to know anyone using it to support flat earth theories is at best, woefully ignorant of science, and at worst, wilfully distorting facts and evidence.

There is clearly a curve in that video.

Even giving lip service to a 'theory' like Flat Earth theory is damaging to actual science. It is frankly irresponsible toward future generations to remotely encourage pseudo-scientific nonsense like Flat Earth ideas, since the average layperson (and the conspiracy nuts) will gravitate toward these ideas (often put forward by the scientifically ignorant yet popular with the masses/preying upon popular notions) and they will then be taken seriously.

We should by all means encourage critical thinking and get people to study and analyse what they see. This doesn't mean rejecting observable evidence and theories every time someone yells 'challenge the facts!' It doesn't mean using big, intelligent-sounding words and voila! You have a valid alternative theory to the established one. It doesn't means taking the obvious and declaring it bunk for random theory X.

This is the problem with conspiracy theories. Most of the time, they are so loosely grounded in reality that their proponents can shift goalposts, change their arguments and make vague allusions all day, and proclaim victory by the end of the discussion. If this attitude ever makes it into mainstream education and the sciences, future generations are doomed to never learn anything.
