Probably about time we updated and posted a current SFL thread given that the previous one was nearly five years old.
The SFL Season starts on Saturday 2nd April with four matches at Cygnet, Sorell, Dodges Ferry and the TCA Ground with Lindisfarne having the bye.
East Coast Bombers, which was mixture of Triabunna and Lauderdale Reserves has ended its partnership with Triabunna deciding to resume as a stand alone entity and play in the ODFA from this season.

At the TCA Ground last night DOSA ran out convincing 56 point winners over Hobart in the Tye Bennett Memorial game, 112-56.
The previous night DOSA's reserves also ran out big winners over Hobart at the TCA.

Good to see all the games were fairly close. Has been some big margins the last few seasons, hopefully it continues

It certainly was a boost for a competition which was fast becoming completely stale and uninteresting for most supporters to watch given the totally lopsided nature of the SFL in recent years.
2015's opening round of matches saw a margin of 290 points between the five matches at an average of 58 points.
2016's opening round margin was just 58 points between the four matches at average of 14.5 points.
Whether that can be attributed to the very windy conditions on Saturday and the rain that hit the TCA, Cygnet and Sorell grounds (unsure about Dodges Ferry) during the third quarter remains to be seen.
Would have to be one of the all time closest rounds in the SFL in its history.
I was at the TCA Ground watching Hobart play Brighton and there was a very strong wind favouring the Smith Stand end.
Hobart had first use of it but did very little with it and kicked very poorly.
Brighton had the wind in the second quarter and could hardly get their hands on the ball as Hobart were completely dominating the game and were peppering the goals but had registered just 6.7 with about 9 out on the full by late in the second quarter.
Then an all-in melee occurred in the forward line in front of the Powell Pascoe Payne Stand and Timmy Langdale for Hobart was sent off the ground while the Robins, who hadn't looked like kicking another goal to that point, got a 50 metre penalty and goal just before the siren to register their second and trail by 27 points at the long break.
Hobart probably should've been 10-11 goals up at half time but couldn't adjust to the wind properly and left themselves wide open.
Third quarter saw Hobart come out and register two behinds and four other shots out on the full in the first 7-8 minutes, the Tigers continued to belt the ball long into the forward line with the strong wind behind them, Sam Reeves was having a tough day and the delivery to him was pretty average.
Then it started to rain pretty solidly for the rest of the third quarter and apart from a free kick and goal to Hobart against the run of play, Brighton had more of the ball and pretty much dominated the quarter as their smaller runners got on top around the ground, Callen Daly was superb.
Hobart were fortunate to be 14 points up but the signs didn't look good.
The rain stopped at three quarter time and Brighton had use of the wind in the final quarter and although didn't hit the front until the 18 minute mark they completely dominated the whole quarter and ran away with the game, Hobart got a late one but by then the damage had been done and a crowd of 770-something saw the Robins win an unlikely victory by 13 points.

Wow New Norfolk 0 2 could it be the end of an era.? Notice there ressie and u18 are in the same postion. While not good for the supporters of the Eagles could be a close and interesting season. Maybe Claremont early season favourites.

Yeah New Norfolk lost about 15+ players over the Summer period after Matthew Smith was appointed coach up there apparently.
They lost a lot to St Virgils, Bothwell etc and barely were able to scrape up enough numbers to field a reserves side and had to bring their STJFL team up to the SFL colts to be able to field three teams by all reports.
Looks to be a very even competition this year, after three rounds there are six teams locked on two wins, Dodges Ferry, Sorell and New Norfolk are down the bottom winless so far but Dodges have had two narrow losses, Sorell have had a narrow loss and two other losses of five and seven goals.
It'll be interesting to see if New Norfolk improves throughout the season or will they stay down, at this stage Lindisfarne looks to be the form side of the SFL, especially having smashed both of last years grand finalists by over ten goals in their first two matches.
Claremont don't appear to be anywhere near as strong as in recent years either.
Hobart are looking much fitter than they have done in many years and have picked up quite a few good players, they let Brighton off the hook in Round 1 and got punished for it, ran all over Huonville Lions (touted as a possible flag threat this year) and had five out today and played poorly against Dodges Ferry and managed to get their noses in front in the last quarter and hold out the Sharks by 4 points.
It's a very open race for finals spots that's for sure.

Norfolk took their 18's out of the SFL last year and put them in the STJFL comp. Pretty pointless thing to do so they brought them back in this year.
Was at Dodges/Hobart. Not sure what those blokes who were bagging Dodges a few months ago have been smoking. They're looking like a decent young side, same with Hobart. Got up to the TCA for the 2nd half of the scoobs, great finish to that game + a close contest in the senior game. Good day of footy up there with some bipolar weather as per usual

In today's "Mercury" an article about raising Sandy Bay from the dead and putting them is the SFL, Next year it is twenty years since they last ventured on the football field at senior level.

Would it work? personally i think the last 19 years of there existence they struggled apart from a couple years under Andy Bennett. I suppose they have a junior set up in place though, however if Scott Wade is in favour I immediately have doubts.

What people dont understand is yes Sandy Bay juniors is a big club, but how many actually live in the area. Most of the players come from Hutchins school and these students live in other suburbs.

I thought it would be the case with there Juniors coming from all other the greater Hobart area, it would also be the third SFL/SWL club in the Hobart City Council Area and with pressure on there southern area from The Tigers

spot on,
this is being driven by the Ego's ,of the likes of Bill Sorell ,Mick Arnold, and Steven Hay
Not enough room ( players ) in the Hobart area to make this a success ,you have NHFC,HfC, the tigers, University , Hutchins,DOSA footyclubs
all playing in the same area now.(miss anyone?) i know none of them will be giving up their recruitment Zones

Hobart football club started so well this season but, in recent weeks, have fallen away. A loss to Cygnet by 120 points yesterday has sparked talk around the club about outing the coach. There's been a lot of talk around the club all season about how disgruntled players are with the coach. Maybe the Tigers board need to act before they start losing players.

Hobart has had an enormous number of injuries since they played Cygnet at Kermandie, since then they've been battling to put their most competitive side on the ground, with between 10-15 good senior players either injured or unavailable through studies, work committments or, in the case of two in particular, being overseas. That's put enormous pressure on the level or performance on a week-to-week basis for a squad that hasn't got an overly large amount of depth to carry things through.
The reserves side also started the season well but had some big losses in between while having to cover the lack of availability of senior players.
The cracks started appearing in the game at the TCA against New Norfolk when they twice got 50-points behind but were able to come home strongly to fall 4 points short.
Since then there's been some very up and down performances, the lowlights would be the terrible display at Dodges Ferry a few rounds back, the Sharks had won either one or two games for the season and dished out an 81 point hiding to the Tigers who were sitting third at the time, at one stage being 100 points up in the last. The loss to bottom side Sorell at the TCA was a huge disappointment, given that a win there would've put the Tigers at a good advantage with the matches to come.
Hobart blew Sorell off the park in the opening quarter and stopped to a walk from then on.
The game on Saturday pitted two sides who were virtually playing for a place in the top five or at least gone along way to cementing it. Cygnet's prize recruit Jason Laycock was on fire early and by 11 minutes into the first quarter he already had five goals to the Smith Stand end, Cygnet already had eight! Hobart had no one to go with him and they fell away horribly, trailing at one stage by 129 points in the final quarter.
Steven Woods is very much maligned in some quarters and there were rumblings of discontent last year and after the opening day loss to Brighton but I haven't heard anything since then, that is a huge shame because he is a good man and without him, Hobart Football Club probably wouldn't be around today - he was the one who went around and helped get players when there were only two players at training and were two days away from going out of existence. He stuck around when most would've walked.
As for new coaches, who would they get? If I recall rightly, Woods is finishing at the end of this season.
The players didn't want Jamie Charlesworth as coach allegedly, and some were unhappy that the club had signed him up to play the odd game late in the season (not that I think he will play at any rate and he's supposedly moving to WA later in the year).
Heath Neville?

Hobart Tigers, Hurricanes,
Steve Woods is a good bloke, but almost shy as a coach. Interestingly I think that he struggles to be hard enough on certain players at time and perhaps this is why he doesn't gel the group like he should. Everyone respects what he has done, but sees his coaching methods as a little old fashioned IMO. Heath Neville would be a very good replacement KINGPIN. He's got my vote if I got to choose.

Final roster round of 2016 coming up this weekend.
Lindisfarne are on top, unbeaten so far this year but don't appear to be as dominant as they were in mid season (ie: blowing teams off the park) but have kicked away in the final quarter the past two weeks to beat Hobart and Dodges Ferry. The Two Blues have headed the ladder the entire season and are shooting for their first flag since their 1989 Southern Amateurs premiership.
Reigning premier Claremont sitting in second spot is still the dark horse, Cygnet have a hit a purple patch and have taken over third spot thanks to a 72 point win at home to Hobart with Halton kicking 11 goals on Saturday, sandwiched in between some great recent wins is a loss to bottom team Sorell however. They are making their first appearance in September since 2004 when they were in the middle of great period in their history under Gary Williamson.
New Norfolk, after a poor start seemed to be getting their season on track but have had the wobbles in recent weeks, back to back losses at Boyer to Hobart and Claremont and a one point loss to Brighton at Pontville on Saturday has seen the Eagles drop to fourth.
An inconsistant Huonville Lions currently occupy fifth spot on the ladder and need to win on Saturday away to Hobart at the TCA Ground to hold on to their finals spot.
Outside the top five, Brighton sit in sixth with seven wins which has been a big improvement from the Robins after a very poor start to the year. Brighton has the bye this weekend and therefore finished their 2016 duties.
In seventh spot, Hobart also on seven wins needs to record a win to leapfrog both Brighton and Huonville Lions into the final five for the first time since 2008.
Hobart have had a huge number of players either injured or unavailable for one reason or another through the back half of the season and their lack of consistency has been noteable. A win against New Norfolk at Boyer for the first time since 2003 and being in front of Lindisfarne 5 minutes into the final quarter at the TCA was all undone by a 72 point demolition at Cygnet last week, this week the Tigers will need to atone, they have arguably the poorest home record of any team in the competition (only two wins at home all season, by 4 points over Dodges Ferry and by 15 points over Huonville Lions) and have done for many years at the TCA, if they do pull it off, they'll face a trip to Boyer in the first week of finals.

Round 21: SFL.
Hobart vs Huonville Lions (TCA)
Claremont vs Lindisfarne (Abbotsfield Park)
Dodges Ferry vs Sorell (Shark Park)
Bye: New Norfolk, Cygnet and Brighton.
