Who would we prefer Marchbank or Tomlinson if we could only manage to secure one of them?

My understanding is Tomlinson probably fills more of a role we are weak in however Marchbank might have more upside?

Probably depends a bit on how McKay, SOSOS and, to a lesser degree, Curnow come on over the rest of the year. If we're confident two of the three can have a regular impact in the forward line from 2017 onwards, I'd be happy to grab Marchbank as the one with more upside and go to the draft for another tall forward. If McKay is going to be 3-4 years away, SOS similar and Curnow played as a mid, then Tomlinson may be more pressing.

I'm in for Marchbank .
I love Carlton teams with a superior backline .
Gotta back in McKay , Curnow and Silvagni with still the chance of Jaksch making the grade as well .
Casboult can hold the fort till they are ready and in 2 or 3 years time we might be ready to land a big name FA.

Keep in mind that Walker may retire and we might move Everitt, Foster and Jones on

I would trade our first pick this years or next for Tomlinson, Marchbank and Ahern/Hoskin-Elliot

Yep agree totally, would do that in a heart beat , Tomlinson only is contracted the remainder are not, all are very talented and will end good players. They 'll make a huge difference.
We'll probably end with pick say 3 to 5 this year so I in fact I'd go for all four players.
Next years draft is a very strong one, so we should hold our picks most likely be a top 10 pick again.

Jones has next year left to run on his contract .
He and Casboult can carry most of the load next year with hopefully Jaksch stepping up to the level while introducing McKay , Curnow and Silvagni as Bolton and the match committee see fit .
Walker should retire , Foster will probably be delisted and I'd love to get anything we could for Everitt .
Marchbank , with JGM developing , rounds out what should be a seriously good backline for a decade .
If we could snare Marchbank with any combo of this year's and next year's second and this year's 2 third's , that leaves us our first's in the next 3 years to add the necessary high class mids .
In 2/3 years time , when the hard yards have been done , FA can be used to add the finishing touches where required .

And leave Cripps playing a lone hand in the midfield? No thank you.

I'll take Tomlinson for a late pick, Ahern for a late pick and an inside mid with our first thankyou.

Yeah.....well......this debate isn't going to go away any time soon.

Both parties would we right in their wants, yet it may not be possible to cover the required ground in the one draft/trade period.

Cripps is currently getting beaten and bruised by being the sole midfielder carrying a large ammount of the load in clearances and contested ball.

Conversely our defence is currently one of the best in the league.

I'm no genius (well... actually) but it's pretty clear to me which is the more important area to focus on.

A good midfield can cover a multitude of sins.

Need to be able to kick a score as well.

Backline the least of our problems.

Here's the thing though:

If the mids available to us, whether by way of draft or trade are let's say a 7 on the Harker-scale and the Forwards/Backmen are a 9, what do we do?
We keep thinking about solving all our problems in a 12 month period whereas SOS and co would be viewing things from a 36 month time-frame.

.........but no question that Cripps needs support. Got it? No question at all but we have to get the right player/s to be able to do that :)

We have the makings of a very good forward line - we just have to be patient.

Let's just say that we need players of every type, get a bit depressed, and then move on to discuss more important topics.

Suggested future topics:
1. Will Gibbs ever get a decent haircut?
2. Should we sign up Cripps for the next eight years?
3. What is this green stuff growing on my windowsill in my bathroom?
4. Why are (insert here) part of the clique and not me?

As in Dale Thomas? Personally, I can't see him leaving by choice and he really does provide leadership both on and off-field. Plus he is finally finding form after a torrid run with injuries. I think that he will stay a Carlton player for the rest of his career - just maybe at a reduced rate.

I like him personally but i am not interested in trading Gibbs or Murphy, i feel we need to get some extra picks in and would be happy if they came for Everitt, White, Buckley (sadly) and possibly Thomas. Yes he provides leadership but so do a lot of people. He isn't the first i would trade but i realise that we cant have extra picks without trading.

Reckon we'd have to come up with a bit more than that Dane .
Other club's will have their hats in the ring for these blokes too .
Our main chance is of course if the players nominate Carlton but even then we'd still have to pay a fair price .

Last season there were a lot of people on here, me included who didnt see how we would get 3-4 GWS guys with 1 pick and we did. This year may be a little different but the reality is, once a player has nominated a club then they are under no obligation to accept a trade anywhere else. This removes all other buyers and any other interest just helps determine a fair price.
The biggest thing in our favour though is the fact the Giants want to take 4-5 players in the national draft (according to reports) and maybe another FA, meaning they have to shed players from somewhere and i doubt they will want a repeat of last years McCarthy situation. If you believe what you read some of their fringe players are on quite good coin so they are also in need of freeing up cap space.

Marchbank: If he wants to come home to Vic. Will any club offer a first round for him? Melbourne, Geelong, Colloingwood dont have a first round pick, i just don't see any Vic clubs offering a first round. Will teams offer a second yes? I think yes. So next years second is realistic.

Tomlinson: In and out of the side, down the pecking order, played out of position, nearly came last year is in the same situation, not enough games to show he deserves a round 1 but there will be nibbles in the second round. We will have a pick around 40, if a pick comes for him around pick 30 we have the dogs third or our fourth to make up any difference.

Hoskin-Elliott: Who for me has shown a bit in his few years there will be worth more than the other two, but what team out of the 7 Vic teams who has a first round pick will want to give it up? But once again there will be lots willing to offer a second.

I saw the list of players the Giants had missing from last weeks win and far out there are so many good players out injured or not getting a game, add to that 4-5 talented draftess and the guys on the fringe their will know they need to leave for opportunity.

You could do that trade and still end up with a top 10 draft pick to get that mid. If we did that trade and lost pick 1 we would have picks 23is, 41, 50ish, 59. 23 41 and 50 add up to pick 10 roughly. We could then trade one or two of Everitt, Buckley, White for a third or maybe even all three to GC for one of their 4 second rounders.

Take pick 10, 40, 59, 77
Add, Marchbank, Tomlinson, WHE and Ahern.

Keep all 2017 picks.

Sounds good to me.

Too right Mids take preference this off season. 2 of the likes of McCluggage Ainsworth Galluci Simpkin.

If Marchbank and/or Tomlinson come to us, there's no doubt the club will have plans regarding the midfield still. Either planning on trading one big name and using other draft picks for it or using FA to get premier mids in their prime still. Maybe both.

I know we need more class in the midfield ASAP but I can see the logic in sorting out the bookends first, especially if we are doing it through the 2015 draft and getting young guys like Marchbank and Tomlinson since they almost always take a few extra years to have the same impact. It means in 2-3 years we have KPPs with a few preseasons done and game experience and can add mids who come on quicker.

In a perfect world it works out great but there can always be hiccups along the way.
