AFL scouts China locations for Port Adelaide v Gold Coast match

  • The Australian Patrick Smith

  • The search for an appropriate location for the AFL’s first premiership match in China has spread with more sites now identified as possible venues and the prospect of the match being staged next year still alive.
The general manager of AFL operations, Travis Auld, spent most of last week in China investigating venues for the proposed venture by Port Adelaide to stage a premiership match in Shanghai next season.

Auld and league national venues manager, Simon Gorr, spent four days in Shanghai with a turf consultant, a Port Adelaide official (Andrew Hunter, GM China & Govt. Relations) and representatives of venue and event management firm Populous.

...“We decided to get everybody together so that we could look at the sites in one hit,” Auld said. “But there are two or three options that are now worth a serious look.” With all parties to report back on their choices for the game site within weeks, a final decision on whether a match could go ahead as early as next year will be made by the end of August. ... “We have a lot of work to do over the next two months.”

The new sites under examination include greenfield sites as well as stadiums. One venue to come under closer consideration is the stadium which hosted the Brisbane-Melbourne exhibition match in 2010. The stadium is part of the Jiangwan Sports Centre in the Yangpu District and has a capacity of 30,000 fans.

....The AFL expects the match between Port and the Suns would draw (12,000) ... 8000 would still be a satisfactory result.
If the numbers seem modest they are based on crowds attending the lucrative Super League soccer competition where the average crowd is around 17,000.

...New Suns chairman Tony Cochrane confirmed Gold Coast’s participation in the historic match, which will be played during one of the league’s bye rounds. It is believed that Gold Coast will receive more than $600,000 for their participation.... “Right now it’s a year-by-year proposition, but we would certainly consider this as an ongoing venture,” Cochrane said. “I really rate David Koch and the job he’s done as Port’s chairman, so it’s a good fit.”

The Port deal with Shanghai Cred is expected to clear Port’s multi-million dollar debt by 2019-20.

Looks like congratulations is in order, I have missed this bit.

I thought the dollars you were getting from Shanghai Cred was to fund your operations in China, didn't realize it included funds you could use for player resources/debt retirement etc.

I don't think you have missed it. That is the first time that I have seen it mentioned that the Shanghai Cred money is to go to debt reduction.

The original $1,000,000 per annum for 3 years is a minimum figure, to be employed as you say with a lot left over ... and just the start.

Thanks Lockhart Road

It's looking like this thing has legs. Time to get that annual leave form in! :china::china::china:

IMO makes a huge difference to the "value" of the sponsorship that you can do with it as you wish/need.

Not having a lend here, that is job well done (pains me to say it).

It was always going to be that way, it just depended on the way you interpreted the media release.

While the precise detail of the debt clearing is new to me, it certainly doesn't surprise me given the way the club has communicated with us about it.

Was interested at the time how the first media report had the 1 mil a year over three years and the rest ran with it as if that was it. Don't remember any follow up questions either. As it unfolds should make some interesting reading as the PAFC sets itself up for the next 50+ years and becomes a heavy hitter again. Some people in this town are going to lose their s**t. Good times ahead.

The bold bit of the article is a bit of BS. Look at the MCG between end of footy season in 2005 and test match on Boxing Day, they dug it up laid an athletics track, buried it and then played a test match and one day cricket in January. And then dug up the gras to expose the track at the start of February. Hosted the 2006 Comm games and then dug up the track and then re-turfed it. The Closing ceremony of the 2006 Comm Games was 26 March and the first game of footy there was on ANZAC day. My niece ran on the track for national schools championship over the last weekend of November.

The AFL has previously worked with Populous on stadium ventures in Australia and the company has helped with the Super Bowl presentation.

“We decided to get everybody together so that we could look at the sites in one hit,” Auld said. “But there are two or three options that are now worth a serious look.” With all parties to report back on their choices for the game site within weeks, a final decision on whether a match could go ahead as early as next year will be made by the end of August.

“We would need a decision by then for fixture reasons and preparation of the turf. It gets pretty cold over Christmas so we need to lay turf works by September,” Auld said. “We have a lot of work to do over the next two months.”

Port Adelaide have a three-year deal with leading Chinese property developer Shanghai Cred.
