emuboy RogersResults Ron The Bear help me guys. I'm trying to solve this:
What is it that in the history of AFL/VFL matches:
Has only been done 23 times,
Has been done by Geelong the most but never by Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond or St Kilda.
Was first done by Melbourne in 1901, last done by West Coast in 2007.
Has been done the most against St Kilda but never against Brisbane, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond or West Coast.
Has Melbourne with the highest and lowest score in doing it.
Has had only 1 year when there was more than one occurrence.
been scouring the website but can't work out what it is.
This was back in 2010 or 2009 (page three of this thread) when it was posted so it's probably more than 23 times by now but it's been driving me crazy.
Can any of you remember what it was?
I'm glad emuboy came to the rescue because it was certainly driving me crazy as well, and I had spent quite a few hours trying to figure out this mystery. It's still only occurred 23 times. Footscray managed it in just their second match (the home team is in blue):-emuboy RogersResults Ron The Bear help me guys. I'm trying to solve this:

Wow!!! Totally worth it. That's a very unique and cool stat.Hi One Eyed Sainter
From memory, and by looking at the results for 1901 and 2007 it appears to be the cases of a team kicking the same number of goals and same number of behinds and winning by the same margin.
In Round 13 1901, Melbourne 6.6-42 d. Carlton (5.6-36) by 6 points, and in Round 19 2007 the West Coast Eagles 17.17-119 d. North Melbourne 15.12-102 by 17 points.
This is just a follow-up to what I posted up the page a bit. It shows the 29 occasions where a team has had an equal amount of goals and behinds at 1/4 time, 1/2 time, 3/4 time and full time. There hasn't been a game where both sides managed this feat:-

Collingwood, Manchester United, what's not to like?! Here's the real inspiration for the "colour scheme" BTW! I probably should be using a slightly darker blue by the look of this.Just for the record, I first made mention of all teams who finished with the same number of goals and behinds at the end of each quarter way back on page 18 of the Stats Observations thread. I state this purely for BigFooty historical context purposes.
However I would like to commend the colourful display used in the quoted table in order to depict the same info. It has a very appeasing red, white and blue (Bulldogs) aspect to it. I knew there was a reason I liked you 35Daicos.
In fact 137 of the 155 total points, and 19 of 21 goals, in that match were scored at the same end of the fieldRichmond vs Gold Coast, Round 17, 2011: Richmond and Gold Coast take turns utterly dominating quarters of football, Tigers in 1st and 3rd and Suns in 2nd and 4th.
Richmond: 6.8, 6.9, 8.16, 9.16 (70)
Gold Coast: 1.2, 7.6, 7.9, 12.13 (85)
That's nuts. There are some interesting parallels between Western Bulldogs' quarter by quarter scores in their preliminary final and the grand final this season.
Preliminary 2.3 (15), 6.5 (41), 9.6 (60), 13.11 (89)
Grand final 2.0 (12), 7.1 (43), 9.7 (61), 13.11 (89)
The quarter time scores have a three points differential, the half time scores have a two point differential, there is one point separating the three quarter time scores, with scores then being dead even at the end.

Hasn't happened since then. The battle of the wooden spoon for 1936 was played at the Arden Street Oval in Round 10 between North Melbourne and Fitzroy, and produced one of the strangest scorelines I have ever seen:
North Melbourne 0.5 0.5 4.9 9.11-65 d. Fitzroy 2.3 3.8 3.10 3.12-30
Never before have I heard of a game, post World War 1 at least, where one of the teams was goal-less in the first half and the other team went goal-less in the second half as the Kangaroos and Lions did that afternoon.

Yes. 28 goals is the highest 3/4 time aggregate out of the 96 games played when 0 goals (aggregate) were scored in the last quarter. There has been no game since the 2004 one where neither side has scored a final quarter goal.I was looking at Will Minson's first game back in 2004
At 3 quarter time the score was 16 goals to 12
At full time the score was 16 goals to 12.
Is that the highest 3 quarter time goals kicked (28) vs a goalless last quarter ?
I cannot explain how hard s**t like this makes me. Love it.One of the strangest finals ever played was the 1974 Elimination Final at Waverley Park between the Magpies and Bulldogs as follows:
Collingwood 5.6 10.6 13.9 19.10-124 d. Footscray 3.1 4.11 6.11 6.19-55
So when the Magpies were scoring at around 50% accuracy in the first and third quarters with totals of 5.6 & 3.3 the Bulldogs were extremely accurate, with returns of 3.1 & 2.0. However, in the second & fourth terms when Collingwood kicked with ruthless accuracy with 5.0 & 6.1, Footscray managed abysmal returns of 1.10 & 0.8.
So at one end of Waverley Park that afternoon, a combined total of 16.2-98 was scored by the two teams, but at the other end the total combined score was 9.27-81.
This is only the second time this has happened. Collingwood kicked 3-3 (21) in all four quarters against St. Kilda in Round 8 of 1934:Port Adelaide, in their match against GWS in round 7, 2014, kicked exactly 5.3 (33) in all 4 quarters!
Power: 5.3 (33) 10.6 (66) 15.9 (99) 20.12 (132)
Giants: 3.4 (22) 5.4 (34) 9.6 (60) 15.7 (97)
That was Ted Whitten’s last match as a player, and was played after half-time in torrential rain. On the same day at Windy Hill, Essendon kicked 9-8 in fair conditions in the first half against Geelong but only scored six behinds in the wet in the second half:22 - Footscray (11 goals) vs. Hawthorn (11 goals) - 1970 Rd. 5
