Probably best current thread for this one, just when we think we have something special, someone comes along and trumps all over us.
Turns out we don't even have the best "Old Boy's Club" - can the AFL do nothing right?

The Scots wading in on Coe and Readie off the back of the IAAF shenanigans - plenty of similarities for those footy supporters disenchanted with the AFL and the way it still runs footy out of Vic.

" ...
Yet Reedie is not the problem. Nor, indeed, is Coe, despite the damage the former Olympic champion has done to athletics’ reputation. Rather, they are merely symptomatic of a wider and more dangerous problem, namely, the cosy old-boys club that monopolises the upper echelons of sports governance. Prior to becoming president of WADA, Reedie was chairman of the British Olympic Association. Twenty-two years ago, he joined the IOC and is currently a vice-president in concurrence with his WADA role. Similarly, Coe is a long-serving member of sport’s old-boys club; he has held influential posts within the BOA, London 2012’s organising committee and the IOC, as well as the IAAF.

And herein lies the issue: for all of these men, and they are invariably men, to ascend to the upper levels of the sporting hierarchy, they must gain entrance into the inner circle. Without the support of their fellow “old boys”, progress is impossible. But with this acceptance comes an unwillingness to act autonomously or in a manner that may bring the wrath of their the fellow old boys. And so, it becomes far more important for the old boys in blazers to protect their own self-interest than do what is best for their sport, and most importantly, the clean athletes who are the ones suffering the most. To go against the wishes of those at the top of the sporting hierarchy will result in expulsion from the sacred club pretty sharpish, and, make no mistake, the Reedies and the Coes of this world know this.

There is no easy solution; to banish the individuals whose interests are so intertwined with each other’s would result in the IOC, the IAAF, WADA and the other major sporting bodies having no leaders left altogether. Major businesses would not put up with this crap, so why does sport? If individuals continue to prioritise and protect their own career ahead of the health of sport then a solution will be never be found."

You could easily transpose the names "AFL, Dimetriou, Little, et al" in to this excerpt and it would almost make full sense, to what our own dirty little doping saga (amongst other sagas) has shown of the local league management.

My only disagreement is with the "major business line near the end - the "sporting old boys club" extends out in to there, leaches it's money from there, pays the "business old boys club" there by way of glory-dust, association with youth, winning, virility, etc.

We are seeing some sparks of big business differentiation at times (a nearly-former, Aussie car-maker and sexist-dunking-gate) but nothing yet enough to claim that the two are no longer strongly linked, still too much of a symbiotic relationship, at the expense of the athletes/players.

Rio 2016: 67 Russian athletes hope to compete despite doping suspension

"The figure of 67, however, seems unrealistic because the IAAF has strict criteria, limiting applications to athletes who train outside Russia, which would exclude pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva and 110m hurdles world champion Sergey Shubenkov"

Ings reporting someone from CNN, reporting CAS, that no Russian Athletes have appealed to CAS - running out of time, one would think.

CAS confirm to CNN they haven't received any appeals from any Russian athletes as of yet. Via my colleague @CharlieMooseGib

Another lab out of action for at least 4 months, a backlog of tests developing in the leadup to Rio?

No reference to what the failing was for, that I could see.

https://www.wada-ama.org/en/media/n...ds-the-accreditation-of-the-almaty-laboratory

"The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has suspended the accreditation of the Athletes’ Anti-Doping Laboratory (Laboratory) in Almaty, Kazakhstan for a period of four months.

The suspension, which took effect on 24 June 2016, prohibits the Laboratory from carrying out any anti-doping activities including all analyses of urine and blood samples. During the period of suspension, samples are required to be transported securely to another WADA-accredited laboratory, ensuring that athletes can have full confidence in continued high quality sample analysis and the wider anti-doping system. The decision to suspend the laboratory is a direct result of the more stringent quality assessment procedures enacted by WADA to ensure laboratories maintain the highest standards."

Am I a cynic or is it coincidence that a backlog of tests is forming prior to the Olympics.
Does this mean not all tests will be done in time for the Olympics and a doper may go undetected????

And we are on to rowing - more of those dodgy ruskies.
They should be more like our honest blokes!

Good news for the Kiwis, over the pond.

http://www.worldrowing.com/news/fisa-announces-disqualification-the-russian-men-quadruple-sculls

1 July 2016, Lausanne
The World Rowing Federation, FISA, advises that the Russian men's quadruple sculls is to be disqualified due to a doping violation.

On 17 May 2016, rower Sergej Fedorovtsev provided a urine sample at an out-of-competition test conducted by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. Fedorovtsev was a member of the Russian men’s quadruple sculls that qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta on 24 May 2016 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

On 16 June 2016, the analysis of this urine sample indicated a positive result for the prohibited substance Trimetazidine which is a substance listed in Section 4 of the banned substance list in the category Hormone and Metabolic Modulators, paragraph 5, metabolic modulators. He was suspended provisionally on this date.

On 30 June 2016, the B sample was opened in the presence of the rower and the subsequent analysis confirmed the result of the A sample. Therefore it is considered that an anti-doping rule violation has taken place.

In accordance with Article 10.8 of the World Anti-Doping Code (listed below), the results of all competitions in which the rower participated after 17 May 2016 are therefore automatically disqualified.

Article 10.8 Disqualification of Results in Competitions:
Subsequent to Sample Collection or Commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation.
in addition to the automatic disqualification of the results in the Competition which produced the positive Sample under Article 9, all other competitive results of the athlete obtained from the date a positive Sample was collected (whetherIn-Competition or out-of-Competition), or other anti-doping rule violation occurred, through the commencement of any Provisional Suspension or Ineligibility period, shall, unless fairness requires otherwise, be disqualified with all of the resulting Consequences including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

The Olympic qualification place for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games earned by the Russian men’s quadruple sculls on 24 May 2016 is hereby withdrawn and the FISA Executive Committee has decided that the New Zealand men’s quadruple sculls, which was placed 3rd, is hereby attributed this Olympic qualification quota spot.

And just as I was beginning to despair that we were staying out of the doping shenanigans ...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07-...-vinod-kumar-nomination/7632256?section=sport

Wrestler Vinod Kumar is set to be kicked off the Australian Olympic team after copping a doping ban.

Six-time national champion Kumar, one of two wrestlers selected in the Greco-Roman discipline, tested positive at the African/Oceania Olympic qualifier in Algeria in April.

A subsequent test of his B sample was also positive, and he has been suspended four years, but has 30 days to appeal.

The Australian Olympic Committee said on Friday it had asked Wrestling Australia to withdraw Kumar's Rio Games nomination.

The Italians looked to have lost a walker (again) and Tallent looks likely to pick up another title via special presentation (again) ...

Love the request to postpone the investigation until the Olympics - get a medal and worry about hanging on to it after the fact, robbing another, more deserving walker of the real ceremony.

"
Italian race walker Alex Schwazer has been provisionally suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) after his B-sample came back positive.

The 2008 Olympic 50 kilometres race walk gold medallist tested positive for testosterone following the re-test of a urine sample taken on January 1 but details only emerged on June 22. Analysis on the B-sample was carried out on Tuesday (July 5) at the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory in Cologne.

“The IAAF confirms it has provisionally suspended Alex Schwazer after the B sample confirmed the positive finding of the A,” the IAAF confirmed to insidethegames.

“The athlete will be offered an expedited hearing prior to the Rio Olympics.”

Schwazer had only returned to competition in May following the completion of a drugs ban after testing positive for erythropoietin before London 2012.

The 31-year-old had admitted his offence four years ago but this time claims he is innocent and is the victim of a conspiracy.

His lawyer Gerhard Brandstätter claimed yesterday that the results of the positive test were known on May 13, but it was more than a month later before Schwazer was informed.

He argued that an investigation into the drugs test be suspended until after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next month.

Schwazer claimed a shock victory at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome in May, beating Australian Jarred Tallent into second place by more than three minutes.

The Italian could face the prospect of being stripped of the title should he be banned after the hearing, which would also rule him out of the Olympic Games.

Tallent was awarded the Olympic gold medal from London 2012 last month after the results of original winner, Russia’s Sergey Kirdyapkin, were annulled because of doping.

Tallent had also finished second behind Schwazer at Beijing 2008.

Just a little more interest developing on the Russian front:

Antidoping officials from at least 10 nations and 20 athlete groups are preparing the extraordinary step of requesting that the entire Russian delegation be barred from the Summer Olympics over allegations of a state-sponsored doping program, according to email correspondence obtained by The New York Times.

At least 10 national antidoping organizations — including those in the United States, Germany, Spain, Japan, Switzerland and Canada —

Oh no, it is all a conspiracy against the Russians, so they are trying to get journos to watch a new doco setting the story straight.

“The documentary presents the Russian side of the story, and offers facts that point to a consistent campaign of disinformation and harassment waged against Russian sports establishment and Russian athletes,’’ the email states.

Good story from French TV on 4 Corners tonight. I love how Putin's Russia is just like Stalin's Soviet Union. If you do or say you will do something to hurt the image of the state, you end up dieing in a mysterious manner. Just like those 2 RUSADA official who were going to spill the beans.

So does Jarred Tallent get a second 50km walk gold medal upgrade from 2008 to go with his 2012 upgrade over the Russian doper? The Italian who won in 2008 admitted to using PEDS and is now voluntary subjecting himself to 40 blood tests per year where as other walkers do 3 to 5 a year. I didnt hear him say it, but is he claiming he started doping after 2008?
