See, he's just a regular guy from a regular family. ;)

400k in Adelaide is like $1m everywhere else.

It's like 750k in Sydney, 650k in Melbourne, 600k in Perth, 450k in Brisbane and Canberra, 300k in Darwin and 250k in Hobart.

It's always funny to see people talk about something they have no idea about.

If your parents are telling you what they earn, or, as a grown adult, you are asking them, I genuinely feel sorry for you.
But in the spirit of sharing my Mum is an author and would have once earned over a million in a year.

Unfortunately writing has become one of those trades where a piece that would have earned you a nice sum of coin wouldn't be worth anything now.

Oh, geez. I like you Croweater, you are good for this board.

Yeah, this. Yet every parent (ie. mother, ie. mine) thinks they have every right to interrogate you on your money/savings/ etc etc.

I don't really like anyone asking me how much I earn etc. Whatever happened to money being a taboo topic? I've got a rough idea what most of my friends earn by knowing their industries but I don't keep tabs on them. If someone I know gets a new job I'm happy to ask if they're happy with the pay, whether it's an increase on where they were etc. but I won't just go 'how much are you getting?'. That's rude.

A mate of mine has recently moved to Adelaide and works in the Burnside area. Was back in town last week, had a quick chat, he was raging on rich campaigners and the ridiculous shopping centres and overpriced trinkets.

Did lol.

I don't ask any of my friends what they earn, because that's rude. If they choose to tell me, then that's a different story, and I'll tell them what I earn just to be reciprocal.

Like I said, my family and I are pretty close, and so we talk about those kinds of things openly. No, I don't demand my parents tell me what they earn, but if a discussion takes place about money, they'll tell me about it. For example, last month Dad was asking me what I thought my bonuses would amount to this year, and I told him. He then told me his salary and expected bonuses. Things like that.

Unfortunately, like most creative fields, writing has become so accessible and saturated (mostly by garbage) that it's more about how good you are at marketing rather than how good you are at actually writing. The stuff that makes the top 10 lists on Goodreads.com is usually absolute crap churned out by people that have popular tumblr or instagram accounts.

I don't talk about earnings with friends but I thought it was pretty normal that families know each other's earnings. We've never directly asked each other, it sort of just comes up in conversation.
