Gibbs averaged 27 disposals per game to Lyons 21 and was tagged in quite a few of our games. Not similar players so not the best comparison. The players in Carlton's side that are worth comparing to Lyons are Graham, Whiley, Curnow and Kerridge. Fringe midfielders who cop very little heat from the opposition.
Ok. I'm not that invested TBH, just highlighting that stats can be manipulated for any agenda.

Let's agree that Gibbs is an absolute ripper who will look fantastic with a bit of red and yellow added.

I really hope we finally get our first father/son player. ;)

You can try and hoodwink people with stats, but if the people you are presenting the stats to know what they are looking at and understand the context, the numbers don't lie.

I have noticed that Crows fans have a bad habit of overrating their own, and the stats don't support a lot of their opinions.

Cool story bro.

This.

Stats like DE are such a broad area that cant just be looked at in one number.
Need to factor in; un-contested vs contested possesion, kicks vs handpass and even inside 50 vs rebound fifty.
Think we could all agree that a handpass along the half back with no pressure is a lot easier than a 40m kick to a target inside 50 with someone on your tail.

Just saying we need to look at HOW players get their disposals

That's right.

Understanding the context is key. A player like Cripps is going to be judged on his DE in a similar light to say someone like Josh Kennedy from Sydney as they are similar players who win the ball in similar situations.

You might judge Gibbs DE against someone like say Pendlebury

Signed until end of next year. Bolts wanted us to go after him as our key target but SOS wants Fyfe to be our focus instead.
...
After a few minutes SOS stood up, looked and everyone earnestly and declared, better Nate than Lever.

I'd fallen 40-odd pages behind on this thread, and catching up was sapping me of the will to live... thankyou so much for this :thumbsu:

On one hand, in a very bizarre way, I'm reassured.

I've been very nervous when I've read, almost every day, the constant 'In SOS/Bolts we trust'. It indicated that we, as a supporting group, hadn't quite let go of the messiah complex we've had in the past; instead of pinning it to a player - although some have done so with Cripps, to a certain extent - they've done it to the coach and list manager. It worried me, because beyond a single season, neither of the two of them can truly be marked on their relative skill in their positions, only on their job so far; SOS made an excellent case towards being a good talent identifier at GWS, but when you get that many opportunities you'll hit more often than someone with a leaner set of picks, and Bolts was an assistant coach, albeit at the most successful club of the AFL era. And, so far, they've done well, but the constant 'have faith's wore at me. I don't want to have faith, I want to look objectively at the trades/drafting and to understand why, using logic and knowledge, a particular move has been made. That, to me, allows me to confirm that we're moving in the right direction.

So, for me, the antagonistic response by posters in here is deeply reassuring, because trading out pick 5 could be a great move or a shocker, depending on whether or not you rate this draft and what we get for it, so by the above criteria I can get my head around it, but the Gibbs trade as outlined is a shocking trade, not only because it is trading out our second best mid for significant unders but because it goes against everything that Gibbs has said about us, and about being traded. It tells me that there are plenty here who, despite their admiration for SOS, are capable of critical thinking, and that can only be a good thing.

On the other hand, when it comes to trading Gibbs and 24 for Lyon and 13, that's just silly. We'll see just how far that goes, because if that comes off it will both be more surprising than the Menzel for 28 last year, and we all know how that turned out.

Based on the rumours floating around: the Blues recruiting department are dead against the current AFL approach of multiple midfielders playing football in our team

We are apparently gonna go complete left field and not recruit midfielders and also trade any good (Gibbs) ones we have for others rejects.

Not only will it guarantee more high drafts in 2017 for the Blues but there is a chance that the Northern Blues may set records in 2017 - most ruckman/KPP ever to play in a team & least kicks/handballs/whatever stat you care for including goals.

OR all the rumours are not the full truth and SOS will work his magic in October and will look like a genius

As dumb as it sounds it could work. You recruit a great spine while sacrificing the mids and as a result lose games and ladder position, ensuring better draft picks. Then just recruit, or, take through free agency mids and then start putting together wins.

Of course I still think you need mid talent around to help the young-lings and am dead set against trading Gibbs or losing pick 5.

I was extremely worried this time last year with all the trade rumours (e.g. Hendo for Josh Walker & 28), but we ended up killing it.

Not worried at all this year. Complete faith in our new strategy.
I remember all the cats and neutral supporters suggesting that it was a great trade for us, and that we should just accept it.

Sounds a little familiar...

-Gibbs is 28 will be 31 when we come good, 13 is ok. Especially if we think we can get Fyfe next year (a younger, better version of Gibbs)

-Pick 5 is just one man, Marchbank will be so good with wiets and plow, he will be like Rowe was this year defensively, with the ability to rebound. Dont know much about Pickett, but he was pick 4 (that's better than pick 5) must have talent and at 20 with an AFL medical staff surely we can get him right. Stewart, great size and athleticism i liked the look of him in 2015 and you'd have to be a star to hold out Patton, Cameron and Lobb
Could be a long term no2 with McKay. McKenna, who knows...probably sos. 5th what a surprise...so exiting,
Probs a salary dump though.
I'm all for this deal, I'm confident that Marchbank alone give us enough service that this
Deal is fair, the rest is a bounus.

-hrovat 3rd next year, sure why not, hard worker, good character.

I honestly like all rumoured deals.

Need to look at them from the perspective of 2018-2020
