It's strange, we did similar to get Sheed and a lot of people around here were very upset.

I guess the thing our recruiting staff are doing wrong are not being a different club that we have no emotional investment in. Everything looks 'bold' and 'brave' then.

As already pointed out its not similar at all and as for our trade we were going to take Sheed all along so it was a great move. ;)

Not convinced Freo take SPS anyway. Why do they need another mid?
What has needs and Freo drafting have to do with each other. In the 2014 draft full of KPP, they went Weller. Oh, no thanks to Lever or Goddard. We want another midfielder. I believe Freo with mids are like 19 years olds with hard-ons - they just can't help themselves.

I've been rolling my eyes a bit at people claiming we're an old boys club and then also complaining that we might have pissed off Jake by delisting Alec.

Just listening to Wallace and Barrett discussing Mitchell's request to move to Hawthorn

Mitchell leaving is due to salary constraints and this was linked to the millstone that is Tippett's contract which is hurting their salary cap for a player that hasn't performed commensurate to how well he is playing. So we have to be careful what we wish for when it comes to wondering why the club doesn't do more to attract established players - they come at a cost and sometimes they aren't worth it.

Hawthorn's success is still very much built on the likes of Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Gibson and Burgoyne who are all approaching the end of their careers. They're losing Hill, probably another quality player in a trade and Roughead may or may not get back (hopefully for him he does) and whilst they're picking up some players through trade and FA they aren't getting into the draft. They've got a fight on their hands to maintain their status as a contender in the next couple of years.

That sort of rational, level-headed analysis has absolutely no place around here.

Although I think it's actually a pretty good list building strategy but not to the extent to which they have taken it, and a lot of the mids they have taken over the past 6 or 7 years have been skinny flankers instead of contested types.

There's a lot to gain by consistent drafting of contested mids IMO, but you absolutely need to pull the trigger when there's guys like Lever available.

Yep I hate these other clubs doing everything in their power to try and win a flag, really gives me the shits.
Meanwhile at West Coast......................................

We added in Redden and Jetta last year, but sure we never do ANYTHING at all to try and improve our list

The experiment didn't work this year, but you also can't sit back and say the club didn't try either.

Lol, says it all doesnt it

Here is a summary of what your club did (and didn't) on the first day of player trading for 2016.

ADELAIDE: Started the process to bring Bryce Gibbs to the club from Carlton.

BRISBANE LIONS: Lots of discussions about no.2 pick, Tom Rockliff and Pearce Hanley. Rockliff will probably stay, Hanley will likely leave.

CARLTON: Blindsided a bit by the Gibbs news but he is under contract, so the Blues hold the aces. Zach Tuohy declared he wants to move to Geelong.

COLLINGWOOD: Likely to get Daniel Wells. Kicking the tyres around Rockliff.

ESSENDON: Expected to secure a second-round pick from the Demons for Michael Hibberd.

FREMANTLE: Inching closer to securing Cam McCarthy from GWS. In talks for Hawthorn's Bradley Hill. No major update on Hayden Ballantyne, Michael Barlow and Chris Mayne, although they want Ballantyne to stay.

GEELONG: Flagged interest in Brett Deledio. Reportedly after Carlton's Zach Tuohy. Daniel Menzel signed for another season.

GOLD COAST: After a topline Hawk in exchange for Jaeger O'Meara.

GWS: Inching closer to releasing Cam McCarthy to Fremantle. But imagine the deal had they done it 12 months prior.

HAWTHORN: Secured Ty Vickery, learned officially that Tom Mitchell wants to come andkicked off the Jaeger O'Meara talks.

MELBOURNE: Nearing an agreement with Essendon to secure Michael Hibberd.

NORTH MELBOURNE: Lost Daniel Wells, almost certainly to Collingwood and missed out on Carlton's Zach Tuohy who wants to join Geelong.

PORT ADELAIDE: Still open to offers for Hamish Hartlett.

RICHMOND: Chose not to keep Hawthorn-bound Ty Vickery. Will Brett Deledio follow him out the door?

ST KILDA: No wheeling and dealing on day one.

SYDNEY SWANS: Midfielder Tom Mitchell wants a trade to Hawthorn.

WESTERN BULLDOGS: Not much happening at the moment.

WEST COAST: No concrete developments just yet.

To be fair, the proposed trade here involves getting McCarthy.

That would be like us trading pick 6 to Brisbane in exchange for Yeo, pick 11 (Sheed), and whatever pick we used to get Karpany.

It's not really that similar.
As already pointed out its not similar at all and as for our trade we were going to take Sheed all along so it was a great move. ;)
That's exactly the point, although it remains to be seen where that GWS trade ends up, there's still some water to go under the bridge.

Giants are basically giving McCarthy away which makes it not totally analogous, but even so we turned Sheed at 6 into basically getting Yeo for a slight downgrade in the fourth round, and then traded back into the fourth round and took Barrass. It was a great trade/draft period.

That being said we still gave Brisbane 28 when we should have given them 31. I don't want to mention that Lobb went at 29 but... :D

Looks to me like most clubs have either a) done nothing or b) watched as players tell them they want out.

Good - so we aren't losing any players which appears to be common elsewhere.

Best club at player retention.

The experiment didn't work this year, but you also can't sit back and say the club didn't try either.

That was last year.

So far this year players that want to move clubs.

Bryce Gibbs
Tom Mitchell
JOM
Prestia
Hamish Hartlett
Daniel Wells
Brett Deledio (Possible)
Rockliff (Possible)

Now it is of course very likely we have enquired about all of them, All midfielders, all walk up starts in our Midfield. But are we so secretive not even the trade people know we made contact with these guys? Maybe all of them we would have to pay overs to get them but so what, we pay plenty overs for many of our players now.
Obviously they don't want to come to Perth, but money can do funny things. If a player is something you desperately need as we do then you go after them with everything.
Will wait for tomorrow to see us hopefully cast a line in.

This. I like to think weve enquired about them all but are we the only club out there that can keep a secret?

Be patient, the trade period is far from over and just because nothing has come out publically doesn't mean stuff isn't going on behind closed doors.

The Redden deal came out of left field last year, who knows what might get thrown up over the next 2 weeks.
