I don't get the hype around SPP, I get the elite measurables but after watching Tom Bell butcher the ball for half a season I think I would prefer less X factor and more substance. I really like Dylan Clarke and hope we grab him at 16, in saying that drafting Metro boys always make me a little nervous
Dylan Clarke should still be available in the 20's. Both Clarke and SPP have the same knock against them, poor disposal by foot.

I certainly think they are similar players and an area that we should be targeting I just like Clarke a lot more and think that SPP is overhyped based on his athletic ability...we need footballers

I believe SPP's athletic ability is a big part of what makes him a footballer and a late first, early second round prospect. He attacks the ball with aggression and strength and breaks from packs at speed. It's what he does after that is questioned.

There's always the option to draft both players at 21 & 22. If you're worried about Vic Metro players going home, I guess you should be just as worried about W.A. boys going home.

I think going home issues are a thing of the past, well in the sense that it will be higher than the other clubs. Obviously people will still leave however I wouldn't be worried about anyone we draft, lamberts are amazing at what they do and if they can't get a kid to stay then we had no chance anyway.

Word is Lamberts might not be with us next season. Well at least Craig in any sort of welfare role.

Isn't there word we have interest in a state league defender from Geelong? Wouldn't surprise me if we're aiming to grab Allison in the draft and Watson as a Rookie and we pick up a mature defender from the state leagues.

There was, but by the same token we were also linked to Dunn and others. We got Frost, it might be that he was considered the main candidate and by getting him we don't need Stewart (IIRC) or will look at him if he gets through to the rookie draft.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up with both, as I think it's an area which should be targeted. I think its a classic 'floor' vs 'ceiling' argument, if SPP puts it all together he could be star, Clarke I think will be really solid footballer, the type that every successful team needs - but unlikely to develop into an 'A-Grader'. BTW I totally agree with your SPP assessment/description.

At this stage I would settle for a couple of them.

We have four picks in top 22. I think we can be a tad speculative, especially if we go "safe" and needs based with our #3 (I.e. Brodie if available).

By speculative, I mean going for a gun not quite 100% from injury yet (Simpkin, Witherden), or someone who has shown glimpses of being an absolute superstar but hasn't quite cemented it all together, who perhaps may not be the most consistent player at junior level but when on, is absolutely ON. For example, Shai Bolton, SPP etc.

I'd like the club to play it safe with a couple picks, and go for some real x factor, potential high ceiling types for the other two. Good thing is there seem to be quite a few of each in the draft, and at 16, 21 & 22 we will definitely have quite a lot of choice!

Regardless, it would be nice to come out of this draft with an off the charts stacked midfield.

If nothing changes and we have #3, #16, #21, #22 I'd take the following if they were available.

#3 Will Brodie from vic country, has an amazing ball winning ability and has long career number 1 midfielder at your club written all over him. He is a leader too.
#16 Oliver Florent from vic metro, is a classy fast X factor player who continues to improve. Can play forward initially and then move to the midfield.
#21 Will Hayward from SA, half forward type is a great kick and mark and is damaging in front of goal.
#22 Josh Rotham from WA, tall half back who can move up to the wing. Very good both in the air and on the ground.

Nb: If Gallucci or Venables were available at #22 I would take one of them but I think they will be gone by then.

Who would you liken him to?
It is a tough one because he has a bit of physical development left in him so at some stages when he was playing an inside role for Vic Country and winning contested possessions/clearances he reminded me of Ziebell, however, he looks quicker/more agile than Ziebell but that could be misleading due to the fact that he is skinny and yet to put some big muscle on. One that has just jumped to mind is Blake Acres. You know that tall midfielder capable of winning the clearances and contested ball who can take a strong mark but can also spread from the contest and provide a little bit on the outside making an impact on the scoreboard.

Does anyone know, now that you can't carry additional picks into the draft what happens to the points value of picks that are 'moved forward' by those unused picks being discounted from the draft.

eg. We currently hold pick 78 lets say 10 picks ahead of 78 live because the clubs who hold them don't have enough list spots. Does our pick become pick 68 and worth 59 points able to be used to offset a bid on Alison or Watson?

Or does it stay 'pick 78' and pointless?

It gets moved up still.

Yeah Florent would be a great get at 16. He reminds me of Sam Mayes not in terms of game styles but just by the fact that they are natural, talented footballers. He is quick and classy and can win his own footy although I wouldn't necessarily say that that's a big strength of his. Would probably play 22 games off the wing for us next year I reckon.

Between Pick 2 and Pick 17 only one Victorian club has a pick (Carlton #5). EDIT: D'oh and North at 11 - two clubs

Looks like the parents of top draftees will have to face the realities of the draft sooner than anticipated, rather than living in denial and believing their kids should be able to pick where they play.
