Games & Recreation Photography: Who's into it what Camera and Lens do you have and show us some of pictures thread

I have a Canon 1100D (along with the 18-55mm kit lens). Became more interested in photography last year, so I purchased a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

It took me quite a while to actually put in the effort to find out how ISO/aperture/shutter speed interact, so that I could start using manual mode. Admittedly, I still find myself taking advantage of auto if I'm really in a rush to get a photo, but I certainly have a better understanding of how my camera works now.

These are probably the better photos I've taken (yes, some are in auto).

I do have a colour version of this one, but I think I prefer the B/W.

I do have a question though.

I'll be turning 21 at the start of next year and as such, the parents will probably give me a couple of grand, which (at this stage) I'm thinking of spending on camera gear. As above, I only have the camera (Canon 1100D), the 18-55mm kit lens, and a 70-300mm lens.

A decent tripod is on the cards (if I go for a Manfrotto, I'm expecting this to be at least a couple of hundred bucks) and I don't have a flash (external) so that's probably worth looking at. I'm pretty happy with my telephoto lens, so I wouldn't really consider upgrading that.

So, given that I'm happy to take photos of pretty much anything, what would the resident photography experts recommend?

Spend the money on a 70-200 f2.8.
Tripods are great, but you'll find you won't need it as much for a lot of work.

Also what are you shooting mainly?

I've kind of dabbled in quite a few things, rather than 'specialising'. I'd like to do a bit more night photography, which is why I was thinking of getting a tripod.

sooo, I'm trying to think of a good Christmas present for my stepmother, who is a pretty good amateur photog (she's shown at a few exhibitions in Japan etc). Any ideas? I have about $100-150 to spend, so not a huge budget.

Tough. Photography is such an expensive hobby, and unfortunately, it costs money to get good stuff.

Check out Digital Camera Warehouse on High St in Northcote, you might be able to get something there.

Does she have a favourite camera shop? Photographers are usually fairly picky about the gear they want. A gift voucher to put towards something she wants might be the answer.
