Yeah, Place has some great songs but I've always felt that it's production didn't capture the raw energy of the Oils anywhere near as well as it should have. Some absolutely killer tracks that go off live. Lucky Country, Brave Faces and Written in the Heart are all personal favs. It would probably be at two or three if it was a live album I reckon.

So what happened with you and Diesel? Sure, it was a bit of a departure at the time but it's still a bloody masterpiece.

I didn't like Red Sails much at all and then the Dead Heart came out and I gave up.

Fables is actually my favourite R.E.M. album, one that I didn't think many agreed with. It generally seems highly rated though.

My list would be fairly similar to above, with Accelerate lower, probably 13th.

I've always liked Monster and Up would be better if it was a tad shorter

Yeah, there are some great songs on Up but the production was a hot mess. Without Berry they really did lack focus and it took a long time for that three legged dog to find his balance. I still struggle to listen to Up in it's entirety but some of the live cuts of the tracks are awesome. That's why it's so low on my list. Also, you're right, a couple of tracks definitely should have been cut.

Catherine Wheel

Ferment / Chrome / Adam and Eve
Happy Days / Like Cats and Dogs (B-Sides)
Wishville

First 3 listed are too hard to split - all are phenomenal

Mental mammoth towering walls of guitar mixed in with dreamy mesmerising swirling melodies

Its a shame they never really got their due

Best band of the 90s for me
