I don't know about that.

Soccer won't ever be number one but it will take chunks out of AFL.

There are too many kids preferring to play it these days for it not to have some impact.

Throw in the popularity of FIFA on game consoles and the accessibility of all the European leagues and soccer will only continue to get stronger.
But Sanders made a valid point. It was meant to be after the Aloisi goal in 97, then the Asian Cup last year. That it hasn't happened or even made a dent says it will take a long long time to even get close. AFL would seriously have to go through some horrendous times before Soccer takes over.

50 years it's been coming. More people played soccer in schools back then too

There is nothing new about the latest trend.

The same arguments get trotted out and never anything comes of it

The tv rights for oz soccer would be SFA, and that's never changing

Are you sure there were always more kids playing soccer?

A third rate product can never take over

The argument is about share of pie not size of pie.

They are exactly comparable.

Would be interesting to know then what Katy Perry makes from music (not endorsements) as a % the total worldwide music market, and compare that to Dangerfield.

The other thing is musicians tour. They create their own product.

Plus endorsements. AFL players can get endorsements. There's no cap on that.

Maybe per capita.

From the FFA site. 2015

Community football clubs saw an increase of 7% in the past year to reach 499,361 players in 2,155 clubs in every state and territory. The total number of participants in community clubs, school, indoor, social and introductory programs has soared to 1,188,911. -

From the ABS. 1995

Aussie Rules 151,000
Soccer 147,000

Not sure how they counted but there you are.

From The_Wookie site ( maybe he can help this discussion)

Though the Herald Sun says soccer has more

Katy Perry would make a high % of Katy Perry music

You miss the bit where the AFL sunk a load of money in GWS and Gold Coast to have one extra game per round and open up markets in 2 of the strongest growing areas in the country?

As I mentioned earlier, that was all done under the previous TV rights deal. And the heavy lifting is effectively done, there. Sure, those clubs aren't profitable, but neither are most of the Melbourne clubs.

How much coin does FFA get when it gets through to World Cup. Fund distribution etc. We are in Asian groups for a reason. It's all about money and A league has generated since Aloisi goal. It's on the up.

They wouldn't be getting the increased deal without those 2 clubs and the money the AFL continue to invest in them

"More than 650,000 people played indoor and outdoor soccer in 2013-14, while Aussie rules lured only 224,000 participants, says the Participation in Sport and Physical Recreation Australia report."

You would expect with those figures the game to be rating its socks off.

Sorry, my fault i wasn't clear enough

I meant do you feel the same standards should apply to movie stars who earn millions on films that often flop or music stars who make squillions

Is it all celebrity wealth or just footballers you object to?

I think for a lot of people it's the latter and it's because they are so accessible which makes people feel they're just the same as me.

Taylor Swift, Jay Z, Madonna, di caprio, The Rock, Matt Damon, LeBron, Tom Brady these guys are so far removed they're myths, not real

Whereas footballers are much more accessible, they're not myths and they are very much real.

That I think is why people are so accepting of them being ripped off with tiny salaries from a very big pie
Some very good points. I and a few other fans are being purely selfish here - I don't mind if AFL footballer wages double, as long as the impact on my hip pocket doesn't double.

Sure. That's not in question.

The question is, what should the AFL do with that extra money they are now getting?
Reimburse the funds spent on GC, GWS?

Invest in the next opportunity to grow?

Purchase Etihad?

Improve media platforms, websites, etc

Create own web streaming platform for games

Grass roots

Game day

Pricing

Injury support for players

Mental health for current and former players

Drug rehab for current and former players

Engagement with disaffected youth through sport

Women's league

Engagement with refugees and migrant cultures

Health & obesity initiatives for kids

Or another boat for Paddy?

If the EPL was on FTA and prime time, it would be
Its a circular argument though. TV stations do their homework. If they thought the EPL would rate it would be on FTA
