For context

Even though they are in different leagues, you won't see Bochum fans cheering for Dortmund. Nor will you see Düsseldorf fans cheering for Schalke.

Greater Melbourne is still greater Melbourne. You don't get big cities over here - except for Berlin - and they only average 48,000, all whilst sitting third on the table

The AFL hopes of tapping into State Govt in Vic has a direct competitor, the MCC & they are pitching for the same pot of gold.

The afl have one big advantage however, docklands is in desperate need of a pulse

The place is a ghost town outside 9-5, and the govt is desperate to change this. If the afl idea is one that can start seeing the docklands precinct as a destination place, i think the govt will jump on board.

100% correct -and very strong negotiating position for the AFL.

The main concept in the 90's was to make Melbourne a glamorous waterfront city (Don't laugh, the Town Planners said it couldn't fail -but it did, at least from the mass tourism perspective!). To extend the city, Collins & Bourke Sts. directly overlooking the waterfront -the water there is estuarine, blueish/grey, not the muddy brown of the ol'Yarra!

Can the AFL convince the govt. its plan is the key to unlocking Dockland's floundering tourist bonanza (and therefore making the remaining waste land, and the existing buildings, much more valuable for the govt. & ALL other private owners there)

  • Facilities available for year round use for conferences, functions and meetings.
  • The function rooms on the western end provide spectacular views across the Swan River and can operate independently or combined, accommodating a total of 1,500 people in one connected space.
  • An a la carte and a buffet restaurant are located outside the Stadium, adjacent to the western entrance, providing a destination on both event and non-event days.
  • The former Burswood Golf Course clubhouse and function rooms will be redeveloped to provide bar and restaurant facilities for event and non-event days.
    • The BHP Billiton Amphitheatre in the Sports Precinct provides tiered seating for approximately 1,000 people and can host a range of events including outdoor movies, children’s plays and concerts.
Would say they have the whole 365 days a year thing covered.
Wise planning by the WA state govt., to make PS area a 365 day pa tourist/destination precinct

If it is successful, will the WAFC obtain, directly or indirectly, any financial benefits when there is no AFL game on, but visitors are flocking to the precinct and spending money on the various attractions there?

Can the WAFC use this potential "general" financial tourism bonanza for Perth to extract a better deal for it financially, in its negotiations with the WA govt. over the AFL staging games there?
(The AFL is using the same type of negotiations with the Vic. govt; over plans for the VIC. GOVT to pay to upgrade the outside part of the now fully owned stadium -to help make the Docklands precinct a 365 day pa tourist mecca)

Tennis has also put in plans for a big redevelopment, and part of the pitch is the whole 'sporting precinct' idea. Pretty sure their plan had added attractions as well.

What's tennis going to do in this precinct, move the Hopman cup? Agreed they need better facilities but there isn't a real benefit for a big redevelopment there.

Considering the WAFC isn't contributing a single cent to the precinct build, I don't see why they would? I imagine that revenue goes to help pay some of the costs

The Burswood site has the capacity to be a sporting & riverfront entertainment precinct something the Subiaco site would never have been able to become.

What's the benefit in a sporting precinct? The N.S.W. built gthe S.FS. next door to the S.C.G and all it created was a traffic nightmare.
Subiaco has and had an entertainment and restaurant strip.

Was there much debate in Perth, once the location of the new stadium had been decided, but before its design was completed, for the new stadium ITSELF to be a multi-function 365 day pa entertainment complex?

IMO, there was absolutely no thought in leveraging the cost and facilities of the new stadium.
To do that you'd need to construct a building in an oval doughnut with the stadium as the inside liner and the building proper housing restaurants, sporting facilities, convention rooms, businessess and offices.

Yes agree - should have built the Stadium first and once completed and running should have then gone onto building Elizabeth Quay. However Col was probably worried that if Labor got in before Elizabeth Quay project commenced, it would never happen. Also took a gamble that the Mining boom would continue longer than it has. Of course the price of iron ore dropping to the extent it has and the loss in GST revenue has not helped the Governments cause!!

You are being quite conservative. Resources prices plunged a long time ago and as we've yet to see and deviation from all of these these projects.
As for the federal government they're giving $billions for Roe8 and $200 million towards Townsville stadium yet nothing towards the Perth Stadium and prefer upgrading the river port of Fremantle rather than establishing a Cockburn Sound industrial Port.

Uncertainty continues to cloud the move of Western Australia's two AFL clubs to the new Perth Stadium, with the State Government still unable to say when a deal will be done for West Coast and Fremantle to play at the Burswood venue.

Melbourne Park Precint works great... Philadelphia Sports Complex works great... only reason why SCG/SFS is post game chaos is because the lack of trains or trams nearby.

Nah its more than that. Its in a bad spot for throughput traffic compared to the Melbourne Park area. Trains and trams unless underground would only marginally improve things. There are heaps of buses used and plenty of people walk or catch a bus the 2kms or so up from central station. Moore Park Rd is a major east west route and going along Oxford Street isnt much better. Anzac Parade is a major route to the south east suburbs and Centennial Park means there are no alternative ways to get away from Moore Park from the whole east side south of Moore Park Rd all the way down to Alison road. Melbourne Park has the full 360 degrees of roads departing that area.

Anyway that area is regularly clogged on a Friday night thru to Sunday night when there is no sport being played at either stadium.

But she rejected suggestions the timeframe was getting tight to complete a deal, saying the issue should be resolved soon.

"There are issues and they are working through those, it is obviously a significant contract that needs to be signed," she said.

"But I'm told it's going quite positively and I hope we'll be able to finalise that in the not-too-distant future.

"We're continuing negotiations and that will continue right up to the election and beyond if need be."

Labor leader Mark McGowan said the Government had mishandled the process by not finalising agreements before committing to build the stadium.

"If you build a shopping centre, you sign up your major tenants before they made the decision to build the new stadium," he said.

"It is getting very late in the piece to try to sign up the clubs."

What works great for you to make that comment Jake? Just the public transport?
Rather central locations, public transport, parking for multiple events, easier to attend multiple events, a precint which buzzes for much longer, more room for crowds to disperse. I could keep going... you'd have to be incredibly narrow minded to think it's a horrible idea for a city. Much better than having stadiums on different sides of the city.

The Perth Arena and the Hopman Cup might be world class but the State Tennis Centre is anything but. If we want to continue getting big name players to the Hopman Cup then we need to have world class facilities for them to train in. The 4 stage redevelopment is $46 million but $16 million will redo the outdoor courts which is probably their most pressing need.

I think the tennis center was quite fortuitous to get that spot, great position now.

Roe8 is the biggest ******* waste of money and a disgrace. It was planned in the 60s without knowing what we know today. Cockburn must be our port.
As usual East coast giving zero *s about us. Give us the god damn money for keeping the economy afloat. FFS. This is why us succeeding back in the day still gets bought up. We'd have gold ******* dunnies!

Its not an east west thing, you really are paranoid

Victoria lost funding because we wanted to move funds from one project to another (from road to rail). Its canberra simply wanting absolute control.over their funding arrangements

Love to know where the negotiations were at with this. A few months ago the problem was a batshit crazy amount of rent that was being suggested. I'm guessing that's still the case (although i'd expect that the government have come down a bit since).
