Docklands contract buyout speculation

I would expect only the anti-AFL flogs to try and mount an argument that the AFL is not truly national.

Whether people want to downplay the Northern markets or not, AFL sponsorship revenue is huge because the sponsors DO view the game as being national.

Also worth noting that Fox now pay for over 50% of the broadcast rights, and the subscriptions of AFL fans in Brisbane and Sydney must come into their reckoning.

Thanks Wookie, your knowledge of the statistics, numbercrunching, and AFL business issues is awesome, you can put the info. out so quickly -no one better!

Incredible that little ol'GWS, 5 y.o., total viewing numbers place it as high as 10th NOW! TV stations & advertisers are certainly happy with GWS!

It was flogged in the first 3 years, working class & migrant heavy W Syd the AFL's least favourable Syd. demographic, relatively low membership & support base in W Syd., but growing. Tony Shepherd, GWS Chairman, said in Sept.2016 regd. AF participation up 70% in WS, other areas of Syd. regd. participation up 50%- since GWS started.
How does one quantify the monetary value (for the long term future well being of AF) of booming grassroots growth in "foreign"territory of Syd., population 5.1 mill., financial and media capital of Australia- & estimated pop. of 7 mill. in 2037?

GWS aiming for 20,000 members in 2017, if achieved, better than about half of NRL clubs -and NRL the strongest sport in Syd. by far since 1908. GWS also has now 1600 members for its AFLW team, not inc. in its current 11,900 members.

What has attracted very little media commentary is the peak 2,350,000 total TV ratings for the GWS V W. Bulldogs PF, the second highest non GF ratings in history. The AFL GF will always rate highly, irrespective of who the 2 sides are. But Bulldogs, in bottom three of Melb. supported clubs, against the minnows GWS? How did this game pull 2,350,000?

Yep so how are the naysayers going now> GWS is one of the best moves the AFL has ever made and will help in greatly promoting Australian Football overall in Sydney/NSW and considering our game has been played in NSW since the 1870s its about time it became more popular in the biggest State.

The facts are Sydney and NSW are huge untapped markets for Aussie Rules to grow over the next decades and GWS is just the next step in a long journey.

Less than a quarter of 250,000 which was the swans average ratings derived from wookies aggregate after subtracting the finals ratings.

I'd call it arithmetic rather than maths but then I'd be the one being a pedantic flog

Wookie's stats suggest that the average Foxtel telecast draws 190,000 (whether it's similcast, up against another game etc).

Yes, teams that play finals have more viewers than teams that don't...That's hardly a massive revelation.

Also doesn't say anything about where those viewers were. (although yes, Sydney viewers do actually turn their set to AFL for the finals.)

But hey, keep going for the distractions...

How much does the NRL make from their TV rights? Are they national?

Advertisers and sponsors aren't stupid, they don't pay megabucks for areas that don't watch/care about the game.

By your logic, the AFL should make a fortune from the rights to broadcast in the US, because even though nobody watches, it's a big market....

Well, I hasten to add that the AFL rights are worth more.

On the question of sponsorship, it's a non-contest, the AFL and the 18 clubs are miles ahead. That sponsorship value would not be as high if the AFL was not viewed as a national competition.

Kri-fugging-rist!

190,000 for all clubs, 250,000 for Sydney!!! That is, Sydney average a stack more than the afl average

FFS!

That's exactly correct...I hope you have a detailed dossier ready for telsor of all 34 clubs sponsorship deals...

a) You didn't make that clear. One moment you're talking about Sydney, and suddenly you're using 'national' figures?
b) Based on what?

Sure, figures including finals look good, but they look good for any club that gets there...or are you suggesting that the bulldogs are a massive media drawcard as well?

It would hardly be a surprise to anyone that the Sydney teams rate better on Fox given Sydney has the highest pay TV penetration.

Of course that would also reflect in lower FTA numbers than otherwise.

For AFL, Melbourne probably does better, because unlike everywhere else, Vic club fans don't get to see their local teams on TV every game without it.

I subtracted the swans finals ratings and divided by 22. Basic arithmetic again

Edit: but did not take note of the inclusion of nab challenge games in wookies original table...

The only stadium in the southern hemisphere with a retractable roof? Largest maybe, but there are a couple a stone's throw from Docklands alone....
Bloody good stone thrower to get it with one throw. ;)
