I mean, I think it's a good bet (pun partially intended) as I think Eddie's body will hold up and I'm guessing there was probably a trade off of lower yearly pay for more years. But footballers can and do deteriorate quickly the other side of 30 so giving them longer contracts then will always carry some risk.

Fair enough!

I wouldn't get too excited about that.. once his career is done at the crows he will be moving back to Melbourne with his family. his wife has made it clear to people that they will return to melb (where they own their houses)
He moved here due to family as well.

But at least we'll have the chance to get a father son... don't hit the games required and we have no say in the matter.....

What happens in 15 years when Carlton have missed the finals for the 19th odd year in a row? Do you really think his son would want to play there?

Not sure how anyone can spin this negatively (although i'm not surprised you can)

Im not fussed about father son.. that's 13 years away! by that time the AFL will have probably changed in rules on the whole FS. im just going to enjoy the next 4 years with Eddie.

its only 3 years out of the rest of their lives together though... only short term in the big picture.

So in 4 years time with the kids settled in school in Adelaide they'll move back to Melbourne, time will tell.

I don't care about the risk here, it's not like we're talking about some average list clogger we're desperate to see turn into a decent footballer. It may not work out, but it's definitely worth the gamble.

Besides, with the form and entertainment he's provided us so far you could say he deserves this.:D

4 years is a long time. Eddie is the exception to the rule and its a great move. Even if it turns out to be 3+1 in the SANFL. But Harvey was awesome until late 30s and I see Eddie as actually being able to play beyond 2020 in a a similar way.

But we must start nursing him now. We should give hime a week off when we can afford to. Like we did with Thommo. With Eddie its about protecting and maximising this investment.

Congratulations Eddie. One of the great players I think we have ever had in my opinion.

So how many fathers sons is there available?

In terms of his age, he plays a position that can cope with being a bit older.

Unless he slows right down and loses his reflexes there is no concern, he wont lose his skill and even if that happens it might be one year that we suffer a little bit.

Really pleased about this. Not only does Eddie work his magic on the field he offers significant motivation for all the players and supporters. He builds a culture of Team Work and is highly regarded by other club supporters and the media. He creates a positive image of the club which is great for attracting players into the club. In addition to all that have you ever asked (recently) why we seem to not have issues with our indigenous players like many other clubs do. Eddies passion helps mentor these guys and makes them genuinely feel wanted and important ......and they are.

Way to Go Eddie you've earned every penny of your new contract and possibly more.

Fantastic news

Loved the fact the club is moving away from its policy of not giving multiple years to players that are 30 years or older
Like Eddie, I hope it's a one off. I'd rather we don't offer multiple year contracts for 30+ players.

Been top 5 in the club champion voting the last 2 years, 7th in 2014. Leading goalkicker every year he's been here and hasn't missed a game with injury. If anyone is worth taking a risk on with a longer contract at 30 it's Betts.

I agree. I am much more concerned with the 5 year deal we gave JJ, which ends in 2021 when he is 32. Eddie is just a smidge over 2 years older than JJ and has one year less on his contract. I wonder if JJ is getting more money than Eddie on his contract as well. I am very comfortable with the Betts contract. Not so much JJs.

Eddie Betts signs with Adelaide Crows until 2020
Ben Harvy, The Advertiser
January 18, 2017 2:09pm
THE Eddie Betts pocket at Adelaide Oval will remain just that with the specialist forward to finish his AFL career with the Crows after signing a new three-year deal.

Fan favourite Betts has flourished with Adelaide since joining the club at the end 2013 as a free agent, ending a nine-year stint with Carlton.

“It was a no brainier,” the 30-year-old said today at West Lakes.

“Ever since I moved across I love the club, love the supporters, love the players, the group and the coaching staff so it was a pretty easy decision for me.”

Betts, who will be tied to the Crows until the end of 2020, said contract negotiations had been straight forward.

“It was a bit weird because I think the Adelaide Crows have never offered a 30-year-old three years,” he said.

“They approached me and said: ‘how long can you play for?’, and I said ‘probably another three years’, so that’s how it played out from there.”

Betts — who has played 69 games at Adelaide — has not missed a match for the club in three seasons.

He finished 2016 as the club’s leading goal kicker with 65 majors and was runner-up in the club champion tally behind Rory Sloane.

“No, no chances” was Betts’ answer when asked if he had considered leaving the Crows at any stage.

“I grew up barracking for the Adelaide footy club and I’ll probably, not probably, I will, end my career here.

“I think we have a chance to win a premiership and I guess that’s what every kid’s dream is to play in a premiership and win one, so I think our group’s got that and I’m really looking forward to the future ahead.

“And even if you don’t win a premiership knowing you’ve been the best that you could be is, probably, you know I’d be happy with that.”

Last year Betts won the AFL’s Goal of the Year for his third-quarter, right-foot blast from 40m out at Adelaide Oval’s northwest pocket during Indigenous Round on May 28.

In 2015 Betts claimed the same prize for a long left-foot kick from the same pocket against Fremantle, also during the AFL’s Indigenous Round.

He has played played 253 AFL matches and kicked 479 career goals.
