Would love to see this guy in the leadership group. Great mentor for indigenous and non-indigenous players alike.

Eddie Betts signs with Adelaide Crows until 2020

THE Eddie Betts pocket at Adelaide Oval will remain just that with the specialist forward to finish his AFL career with the Crows after signing a new three-year deal.

Fan favourite Betts has flourished with Adelaide since joining the club at the end 2013 as a free agent, ending a nine-year stint with Carlton.

“It was a no brainier,” the 30-year-old said today at West Lakes.

“Ever since I moved across I love the club, love the supporters, love the players, the group and the coaching staff so it was a pretty easy decision for me.”

Betts, who will be tied to the Crows until the end of 2020, said contract negotiations had been straight forward.

“It was a bit weird because I think the Adelaide Crows have never offered a 30-year-old three years,” he said.

“They approached me and said: ‘how long can you play for?’, and I said ‘probably another three years’, so that’s how it played out from there.”

Betts — who has played 69 games at Adelaide — has not missed a match for the club in three seasons.

He finished 2016 as the club’s leading goal kicker with 65 majors and was runner-up in the club champion tally behind Rory Sloane.

“No, no chances” was Betts’ answer when asked if he had considered leaving the Crows at any stage.

“I grew up barracking for the Adelaide footy club and I’ll probably, not probably, I will, end my career here.

“I think we have a chance to win a premiership and I guess that’s what every kid’s dream is to play in a premiership and win one, so I think our group’s got that and I’m really looking forward to the future ahead.

“And even if you don’t win a premiership knowing you’ve been the best that you could be is, probably, you know I’d be happy with that.”

Last year Betts won the AFL’s Goal of the Year for his third-quarter, right-foot blast from 40m out at Adelaide Oval’s northwest pocket during Indigenous Round on May 28.

In 2015 Betts claimed the same prize for a long left-foot kick from the same pocket against Fremantle, also during the AFL’s Indigenous Round.

He has played played 253 AFL matches and kicked 479 career goals.

75 not 65 goals, and weren't those two GOTY from opposite pockets?

Great, I like Eddie, more Eddie is good.

The long contract for a 30+ is unusual but understandable.

Given his formline, and the precedent of Wells, there would have been a risk of him getting a contract offer we would not have wanted to match.

Add to that he's a cultural foundation who makes others better. We want him retiring a Crows player and always being viewed (and viewing himself) as a Crows person.

I guess the question is why make this commitment?

I hope he's performing well in 4 years, but there's no guarantees.

He wasn't going to go to another club.

So why do it?

Seems the risk vs reward on this one is way, way off.

I hate the idea of Eddie turning into another Scott Thompson, a player I used to love who we keep well past their used by date.

I reckon this will be Eddie's last contract. He's the type that will be able to play good footy for a while yet, he's been very durable with us (hasn't missed a game yet). He doesn't have a bash and crash style of play, which will help him down the track.

Good move - Eddie is one of the club's best ever signings. If we win a premiership whilst he's still at the club, he will be THE best signing.

The public love him..
The Crows fans love him..
Opposition fans love him..
The Media love him..
The Indigenous lads look up to him..
The role he plays is not over taxing on the body which is completely the opposite of THommo's role.
He's a damn fine human being as well as a top shelf footballer..

I could go on...

And would any of those have stopped if we just offered him a 1 year extension?

Is offering Eddie a 1 year contract at the peak of his powers respecting him?

Heck, a forever injured Daniel Wells got 3 years

Crows had a firm no multi year contracts for players over 30 policy.

It was good enough for most of the greats that have ever played for our club, why isn't it good enough for Eddie?

Yep I agree and I do respect him.

Got 0 to do with contract length
Potential for gws or gold coast to poach like when they took a punt on Steve Johnson?

I kind of agree with you and therefore makes me think that it would have been Eddie asking for it to give him security to the end of his career. Adelaide obliged, which I don't have a problem with tbh.

Were those same greats at the peak of their powers? I don't believe they were

I can see where you are coming from.

A 3 year extension when he still has one to go is very generous, perhaps 2 would have been reasonable.

Having said that I think if your going to give anyone this type of contract it would be Eddie. Touch wood he remains injury free, he doesn't play a position that requires him to run and run, he's unlikely to lose his speed and his skills.

I wonder what coin he would be on, have we front loaded to ensure that last year costs us stuff all or have we back loaded so we have more cap space now?
