Many of whom end up being, as statistics would have it, leaders.

It is quite often an advantage to be a non-emotional person, particularly if you are able to use the emotions of others to get your way.
This is, pretty much, what captains do - manipulate the emotions of their teammates. It's often termed "motivation".
 
My prediction is Fyfe will sign for 3 years and then leave if Fremantle are garbage. A national/Victorian stage and presence vs becoming a WA legend if Dockers win a flag.. I'd rather be a WA legend in this resourceful, vast and always an iron ore spike away from burgeoning state

If I could plan around knowing when players were going to break bones and heavily mangle a shoulder it would make list management so much easier.

A player could pop an ACL in the second year of a $800,000 a year contract. It happens.

The study I am most interested in at the moment is how many players that are drafted and then have surgery/get injured within the first season make it to 100 games.

I think it would be beneficial to know that of all AFL players those that were injured before draft, at draft, after draft, first preseason on average play x% less games over their careers for each bracket there.

Little snippets might pop up like 90% of players that make it to 100 games without missing more than 6 games through injury play at least 200 games before their career is over.

It would make long term projections a lot more comfortable but they would still be a risk.

The missed games would need to be broken down into groups such as; soft tissue in play, soft tissue in recovery, soft tissue by misadventure, bone/joint injury in play, bone/joint in training, bone/joint through misadventure

I don't think we'll be in a hurry to to delist him if he gets injured again, and if he voluntarily retires in his early 30's due to injuries we don't have to pay him anyway do we?

The AFL only enforced that so strictly with Buddy and Sydney because there was a whiff of dodginess about offering a player already that old such a long contract to entice him to switch clubs. In the normal course of events I was under the impression clubs don't have to pay out a full contract if a player retires on them.

You wouldn't but why on earth would someone retire leaving 1.5mil a year on the table?

Or if he has earned around 10m from footy already. Is injured and sponsorships have netted him another 4-5m plus cars and other benefits.

Add to that a future in media or coaching plus the other opportunities that would no doubt come his way and walking away from 1.5m won't be as hard to fathom as some think.

And there's not a chance in hell we let him go either. He's contracted to 2019, and I dare say his next contract deal will be for a substantial amount of money. As in he more or less gets to pick his salary.

It's not like we really paying anyone now and I can't see that dramatically increasing any time between now and then. Were not exactly bursting with A grade talent. We've cut like 35 plus players from the list in the past two or three years. Probably 10 or more players to go to this year.

Plus we kinda put our foot down with the Gibbs thing last year. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of clubs were grateful for how we handled that (Even if I personally would have let him go for first and second).

Cripps is kind of our future. If he left we might as well just hand the keys back in and ill start following soccer.
 
Just popping in to say that I ****ing well hope he stays, and more importantly doesn't go to St Kilda, they're insufferable enough already.

It's knowing every ****ing year, something like Alex Pearce breaking his leg is going to kybosh the season.
It's knowing that Fyfe being out of contract at the end of it is a BIG BLOODY THING.
It's knowing we've never won a premiership.

It's knowing that every year is a new year.

Unlike the banality of reality. There is nothing like following a losing team. Not that i'm going to swap clubs if we ever manage to win a premiership, of course, it's just the principle of backing the outsider.

The rumour is BS.

If Fyfe is going to move clubs, he is not going to make too much noise now. The last thing anyone wants is another Patrick Dangerfield type situation where it took its toll on Adelaide, Dangerfield and Geelong. It is also a problem for a club recruiting him as if you've got the cap room to sign Fyfe, your existing players will want to get paid.

I think I know the club that is balls deep into Fyfe but haven't had any proper confirmation. Surprisingly, its not one of the clubs that Cornes alludes to.

However, I still believe there is a 75% chance he stays.
 
If we lost Fyfe and picked up Cripps and Mitch McGovern I'd be chuffed.

McGovern is the perfect foil for McCarthy and he'll help ease the pressure of. I can see McCarthy doing better with more talls around him. Unfortunately I've heard he doesn't mind living in South Australia despite all of his mates still being back in Perth. I'm pretty sure he feels a lot of loyalty towards the Crows.

I would love that deal.
 
I used to think the six years of free agency was entitled guff but now I have no problem with it. You should have more fluidity in change in the AFL. Other competitions use it and I'd say ours resembles the NBA's switchings than soccer's top-suck effect (this is also called the Chris Masten effect; he is a top-sucker). Players are going everywhere. Even Hawthorn's acquisitions haven't been scary. Players should have more freedom... other sports have lost loyalty and people feel a freer sense of what good service is, and so is ours. Are people looking at Sam Mitchell or Jordan Lewis as mercenaries? They get what they want and something they would not have at Hawthorn. The Hawks get the chance to pull in two great players and one absolute potato who'll probably end up doing okay because of the club he's now at. Both parties have wound up with three flags in a row and another premiership not even 10 years ago. You'd say neither can be resentful, and neither party is tainted.

I mean Pav is pushing for it, this isn't Tom Scully. If a man that loyal to the cause says it's fair, he probably understands the industry and way players feel more than us.

Tbh I think we lucked out with Pav. We pulled an all-time legendary footballer despite our dodgy drafting and somehow not only was he dominant in any position he played in, he was a good leader, good in the media, and loyal to a fault. With Fyfe, we got him luckily with a so-so draft pick. He is an all-time player and a future Hall Of Famer, but there are questions over his bonding with the playing group (and I say Fyfe is the alright guy; everyone else is a dickhead – I'd rather hang around Nat Fyfe than Tom Sheridan, Nick Suban, or Hayden Ballantyne), and he may not be 'loyal.' We can't expect everyone to do the loyal thing and remain at Fremantle. At some point, a very good player is going to leave and the club is going to be reeling from it. It happens to a dominant side like the Hawks, shit ones like the Suns, and average ones the Crows. Whatever. Way it is. I'm still surprised at Mundy turning down Essendon and Victoria, and I was fairly prepared for Neale to go back home or to Melbs. Whatever. It'll happy.

Just hope we pull Cripps and Govs. Please.

For someone with a surfing passion, he's not going to live close to training for Melbourne teams and then drive 90 minutes to the surf. Maybe Geelong, or Gold Coast/Sydney. - for surfing, but that doesn't resolve the family connections.

He has a national brand, enhanced further if he picks up another Brownlow and/or captaincy. He doesn't need to move to create brand Fyfe. Where he is, just being him pictured surfing, flying helicopters, driving trucks and whatnot is probably his non footy media imagery - not hanging around in cafes and clubs in the inner city.

His image is more classic country kid; climbing trees, playing footy, that sort of stuff. He isn't like Chris Judd where he's got the ugly 'model' wife where they're going to the polo or bogan nightclubs or the opening of a tin of tuna. I think the latter is suited to the eastern states, obviously particularly Melbourne, but that isn't Fyfe. He's not even a massive partier or anything is he?
