Unfortunately it is as simple as that.

The selection of those 2, without doubt, was one of the key reasons we will lose this series. Yes, Warner's poor form is a conttributing factor....we were essentially playing 8 vs 11!

I don't think any of this is black and white, i fully understand them going for marsh pre series based on his past record but at the same time his past record doesn't get used to judge how he actually did in this series and reality is he just didn't do enough, khawaja is labeled useless in asia based on just 4 tests and an average of 19 so no it's not a pass mark for marsh to average 18 from his 4 games here.

This. I don't think anyone genuinely actually expected Marsh to keep his spot come the Ashes. Khawaja will come in for those tests.

The overreaction is predictable; Marsh just seems to polarise people. But his Test average over the last two years is closer to 45 than his overall average, his Shield average over the same time is closer to 60 and he tonned up in the warm-up game. His selection was sound and he provided two valuable innings.

That said, his name is always first mentioned for the chop and it seems like he is always playing for his career regardless of form. He had an undeniably poor series (not the lone ranger there), is inconsistent and 34. He's probably played his last Test unless as an injury replacement.

Good news, he will probably make a lot of runs for WA.

I concur. Due to Marshs age and khawaja being a better option outside of Asia at least he's probably played his last test.

As he has averaged less than 20 this series being a specialist of the conditions I don't think he will be playing any test cricket again.

May as well give his spot to someone else with potential upside.

What a shite test. He should have stepped up and staked a claim to #4 or #6 for the Ashes series, yet he serves up a gigantic s**t salad when he was needed the most. It wasn't a mine field, it wasn't an unplayable track, it was bordering on a batsmans' paradise.

Ian Chappell was on the money a few months ago – should’ve moved on from Marsh by now as not only is he so erratic formwise, but his body always fails him. Somewhat forgotten that one of the reasons Australia was bowled out for 47 v South Africa back in 2011 was because Marsh was incapacitated due to a back injury. And here we are 6 years later and history keeps repeating.

Just a shame that Maxwell threw it away. He and Wade could have scored centuries each and truly saved the test, put it almost beyond doubt.
