Windows 10: General Comments/Positives/Gripes etc

Sometimes Windows 10 can somewhat inconsistent in its behaviour. It's one reason I refuse to use it.

The idea that Microsoft can add updates without your explicit agreement is an absolute anathema to me. My sister in law brought her laptop over for help as Win 10 had locked up and she was in danger of losing a fair amount of work. In the end I could do nothing. The problem? Microsoft had updated it and I'm guessing she didn't allow an immediate restart. After a time it decided it was going to have to restart and then simply refused to function until the restart and install of the updates completed....some 40 minutes later. Not to mention the lost productivity.

The reason provided by Microsoft does not wash with me. They have taken away the power to decide to apply updates and now dictate to the 'owner' what they can and can't do with hardware they purchased.

Its part of a growing trend from companies that wish to have control over what a user does with their products. Apple constantly adds updates to defeat people who wish to jailbreak their equipment. Too bad if you paid for it but Apple wants to retain control over it.

Sony has done things like install rootkits if you use a CD in your computer. They've sued people who program additional dance moves into the robot they 'sold' to people.

Anyway, I could go on but rant over. You get my point by now.

Next time you have that problem, use a non-windows bootdisk. Unless you have encrypted your hard disk, you will be able to copy your data off to a USB drive. Trust me, that part is easy. If you have encrypted your disk or your user partition, it can still be recovered but that takes specialist software and techniques (and time). The worst to deal with is full disk encryption but in my experience, thats a rare beast.

My advice, don't use Windows but if you have to then you can generally recover your data in the event of something going bad.
What OS do you use?

I use a Mac laptop and Windows 10 desktop. I tried mint on Virtualbox but wasn't willing to move away from Ubuntu as my Linux distro. Why did you choose mint?

I prefer KDE. Really dislike Unity, which is why I moved from Ubuntu to Mint. Mate is ok but KDE gives me the environment I like. Plasma 5, while not fully mature yet is pretty handy.

I use Windows at work (all kinds) as well as Mac but Linux gives me far more choice and capability. Only keep Windows at home because I've got too much invested in iTunes....having once had an iPhone. Other than that, I haven't needed Windows in years...not since XP

Have spent most of the morning attempting to install the Windows 10 Creators Update, consistently running into a brick wall at 32%. Others are reporting repeated failure at this point. Microsoft - use your telemetry data and fix it.

Be patient. Wait a week. You know how this works, let others download it first, have MS fix all the first teething issues, and then make a move yourself.

Too late. Tried MS support, they tweaked, they twiddled, they downloaded and installed fixes and then tried the update again. Result = broken OS and vanished restore points -> rebuild, on a machine that was rock solid stable for six months.

I now understand why some people set Windows Update to 'defer'. I hadn't personally experienced problems with W10 updates, except for a common HP printer driver issue and overwritten settings/preferences. However I woke this morning to a large blue pop-up informing me that Creators Update was ready to install. Knew it was coming and thought, let's get it out of the way.

If I bump into anyone claiming to work for Microsoft in the next week, they're in strife. I'll sleep on whether to have another go at Windows 10 or go back to Windows 7, a good OS (eventually).

Be very wary installing this thing if you're happy with your system as is. The 32% problem appears to affect W10 Pro users rather than Home.

had it just over a year on a new pc. straight away got rid of cortana, edge. would like to completely get rid of the sign in screen on startup but apart from that, the only real issues i tend to have is compatability (often 3rd party things, sorting out fixes for games that liked to use games for windows live).

Been having problems for the last week, coincidentally just after a Windows update. Very slow, even stopped for 24 hours. Lost ipv4 and 6 connectivity. Have ipv4 back but still no 6. Still very slow and basic access. ie takes me back to 33mbs days when photos take a minute to load and youtube fuggedaboudit.

Am interested in how to ship off Cortana. But also are my issues down to the new updates or??

Nothing major so far and no client reports of anything particularly wrong.

MS changed the look of a few icons for no particular reason.

Could be any number of things, though I'd bet on drivers.

How old is the PC?

Also, at what stage did boot fail?
It's a late 2013 gaming rig. i5 4670k on a Z87 chipset should be fine.

Got the Windows logo then the white spinning dots. Then it would hang on a black screen. Jiggling the mouse would show the cursor, albeit as the animated loading ring...

I’d say it’s worth trying a second time.

I’ve seen that happen before. First time fails, second time it’s fine. No specific reason. MS just being MS.

Updated this afternoon, already had the network adapter magically drop, had to reset it to get it working. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come, never had it happen before.

Had no real issues other than Windows asking for a log on password at start up. Switched that off and all is OK - so far.

In fact the system performance has magically improved and I suspect that is due to MS modifying the Meltdown/ Spectre patch they applied earlier in the year. After that update my system slowed a bit and even hung at times which is what Microsoft said might occur. Now it is back to pre Meltdown speed.

Noted that the Time Line feature is MS specific as it will only list items searched for and worked on in MS Edge. If you are browsing in Firefox or Chrome previous visits to sites are not listed.

Brand new Windows 10 update has some nice features....

Windows Key + period key will pop up emojis one can select and enter into any text field
Windows Key + H key will pop up a microphone so you can speak out a post into a text field rather than manually type it
Better/easier sharing between PC and phone

just a few of a number more new features.
