Gambling ads to be banned- potential replacement?

Gambling destroyed my family so it can f*** off tbh.

Keep it in the casino and don't advertise it during family programs. Simple. The normalisation of gambling and the proliferation of betting agencies is an indictment on us.

I was unfortunate enough to have this pop up before a Youtube video i was watching earlier.

Gambling advertising is getting out of control and as someone who has had issues with it.
It's hard to avoid it when it's under the nose all the time.
The ads are an embarrassment and so cringe worthy.

Hate 'em. Piss them right off.

Kids, through years and years of gambling ads being thwarted in their face during ad breaks, get socially conditioned to the whole industry. As 12 year olds they go to school, mess around with mates at lunch time about "throwing bets on" whether they can make a shot into the basket and to them that's just normalised social behaviour. Sadly, by that time the seed the gambling industry planted has already started to sprout and within a year or two they're making bets on sports games, first with mates then they go online and do it, then it just goes off from there.

I thought it was pretty funny. They certainly know their market

FTA broadcasters are still going to be interested in bidding for the most watched stuff going around.

At the end of the day, the footy fan is like an old lady with 30 bucks in her purse to buy her grandchild a birthday present. The betting industry is like a thug punching that old lady, fracturing her eye socket, breaking her jaw, sending her teeth clattering across the pavement, smashing her collarbone and kicking her torso so hard that she gets severely bruised internal organs and has to have emergency surgery.

If someone steps in to stop the bookies putting the steel caps into the old lady / footy fan then I am hardly going to listen to the protestations of the thug, am I?

Remember the days when gambling was limited to horse racing and the only place you could bet was at a TAB and there was only one TAB within a 50km radius... Those were the good old days.

I noticed the wave of betting ads at least 6 years ago. Since then it has only been getting worse with a plethora of new companies that have either started up or come in from overseas. Obviously, the betting industry is huge with a lot of money to be made.

If I were running this country I'd do 2 things regarding gambling;
1. Make all gambling agencies/companies/clubs/casinos pay a levy (based on % of profit) where the money raised would go into helping the people and families affected by gambling,
2. Introduce a Gambling Tax which all gambling businesses would pay in addition to the tax they already pay. A bit like the mining tax the Labour Government tried to introduce years ago.

My preference would be that a new law is passed where betting is limited to horse racing only, like the good old days but we know that's not going to happen.

I do enjoy that we don't have the constant bombardment of medicinal ads like in the US.

They're shocking aren't they?

I couldn't believe it the first time I watched a sports stream from an American channel. Every second ad was 'ask your doctor to put you on this drug, ask your doctor to put you on that drug'. Big Pharma gone mad.

Can't say I feel passionately about this one way or the other, but on balance I don't think gambling should be advertised on shows that kids watch.

America's f***ed. Unrestrained capitalism gone mad, where the country has grown enormously in wealth but only the top 10% have anything to show for it, with the vast majority getting jack. And this country is slowly going down that path - look at how Foxtel is gradually taking away more and more footy from FTA.

The funny thing is that half the ad is a warning about its side effects thus making people less inclined to buy it

I am in favour of this. Clubs should not be getting money based on the suffering of others. Australia has really archaic gambling advertising laws and if it were up to me they would all be banned, quickly followed by poker machines. Any club or competition that needs gambling revenue to survive does not deserve to survive.

A levy and a tax? You know they're the same thing right?

Just have that s**t Kendal Jenner Pepsi ad on repeat. No more annoying than the Sportsbet ads every 3 seconds.
