I disagree with the criticism of Spurr here. I thought he was solid. Fantasia, Green and McD-Tip were largely ineffectual, I thought Hughes/Spurr/Sutty were all solid. Weller was worse than all of them. Ibbo and Hamling were meh.
The first half was all down to getting pantsed in the midfield, thankfully Blakely went to Merrett and killed him, Fyfe woke up and Essendon got tired. I'm not expecting any changes unless there are injuries or S Hill is fit enough to return

Well that was pleasing to enjoy the last 5 mins of a game knowing you are going to win.

Still yet to put a 4 qtr performance in yet we are 4-3 and equalled the amount of wins we had last year.

Things we have learnt so far is that we can come from behind. For the 1st 5 years of ross tenure if we got 4 goals behind we were gone but in all our wins so far we have been more than 4 goals in 3 of them and by 15 pts at 3 qtr time in the other so that is certainly pleasing.

Fitness seems to be back to where it should be i know it was hot and the bombers were cooked by halfway through the 3rd but in all our games including losses we have ran out the game well which compared to last year is a big improvement.

When the bombers were moving the ball into their F50 I noticed Tabs was in the back pocket covering the fat side of the ground. He never got a stat and didn't even get used on the release kick, but he was there doing his bit for the team. He's by no means the perfect footballer but FM his work rate is enormous.

Some random thoughts:

The big 4 recruits; Hamling, Kirsten, McCarthy and Hill all shone today. Can't help but think we payed unders for all 4 of them.
Blakely was awesome today. Neale and Fyfe were outstanding in the 2nd half.
Who was that guy wearing number 20, and what has he done with Mattew Taberner??

I don't know the holding the ball rule or deliberate out-of-bounds. I thought I did at the start of the game, but it changed a few times throughout the day.
It was the wrong day to wear jeans.

If anyone can post a slowmo gif or something of Walters doing that steal (which Pav hilariously said "he's from Midland" to Geralds bewilderment :p) then they would be doing the world a great big favour!!

I wonder if Pav will be in a little bit of off camera trouble for that? It wasn't about race ...but it kind of was about race. heh

I saw it from block 104 and when I got home I didn't have my wallet.

"we're still not scoring much. I would like to try Tabs to assist as an option to bring the ball up the wing, and to give McCarthy a weaker defender to free him up a bit, and likewise Kersten.
IN: Tabular
OUT: Sheridan"

thanks for listening again Ross. Collins in for Igbu next week please

At home this year we are running out games well overall with 3 come from behind wins against the Bulldogs, Norf and Bombers. Each time the midfield stepped up, very impressive. I thought at best we could win 8 this year and would accept 6 as a building block. So I am pleased with our efforts especially given the first 2 rounds. This win keeps the team momentum going. Our percentage says we are still likely to be a bottom 6 finisher . will we fall off the cliff like last year after 3 early wins.? I think the development of some players this year plus the recruiting and major injury (stephen hill being the exception) being a non factor so far has me more optimistic atm. But its a marathon . well done to the guys playing above what i expected so far

Haven't had the pleasure of reading through this thread yet but a couple of things I noted:
1. Having tabs in makes opposition back lines have a genuine "tall". The more he continues to take grabs it forces the opposition to be one degree slower out of our forwardline.
2. The day David Mundy leaves .... well, I just don't want to think about it. He is massive in every area of the ground and the game.
3. Lachie Neale is back. Slow start to the year but seeing him and Blakey run at full tilt with their nose on the ground picking up dirty ball as clean as you like - that's a skill few players have.
4. I'd love to know what Balla's is going to have to do to knock Grey out once fit again.
5. Brad hill. That is all. Some sort of world record metres gained today surely

maybe they can play both Balla and Grey. Balla is a Lyon favourite and based on Balla's defensive workrate over multiple years he deserves it

I think that says more about the evenness of the comp this year than it says about us. But yeah, we still have a chance at finals if we are good enough.

If S Hill and Sandi stay fit all year from now on we will 7th-8th a shake

Crozier will probably be who drops for Ballas

Interestingly, whenever we kicked to Tabs on the wing, quite a few times it went over the back where Essendon had someone sweeping forward and they'd get it moving back into the F50 again. It's nice when Tabs clunks them rather than them going over his head

Those 3 OOB on the full in a row by Essendon were gold.

Thought the same , the ump's review of last weeks game must have been really bad.
They have been paying them (holding at the stoppages) in all the games this weekend. More than the rest of the year. I think that Yeo getting whacked and making the umps look silly made it top of the memo for the umpiring this week.

I was impressed with Balic's smothers and 1%ers - his hands in close were good, and he has good movement to get out of trouble. Give him a season in the side and he'll have a breakout next year once he has a pre-season to add some bulk
