Analysis The Matt Taberner effect

There's never really been any doubt about his ability to run, or generally get to the right spots.

There was massive doubts on his body strength and his ability actually mark the ball...and I don't necessarily mean contested marking...in the past he was dropping balls under little to no pressure

It was a good game by tabs. Last time he had a good game like this was against a struggling Brisbane at the Gabba last year when he kicked 5 goals. He got 4 vs a half decent Essendon side. He also did ok as a ruck.

Lets be realistic, I am not expecting Tabs to kick 4-6 goals each week. Tabs isn't he main guy in he forward line but at his best can be a good cog in our forward structure. If he kicks 2-3 goals and get 10 disposals then that is fine.

This is a totally different forward structure to our 2013-5 era. Sure we had Pav and Ballantyne in their good years but we also had Mayne as a 2nd tall, Walters was emerging too we also heavily relied on Mids to get 12 goals. Now we Got Tabs with a few years under the belt, he isn't a rookie like he was in 2013. McCarthy and Kersten are 190cm 90 kg talls that are very good on a good day. Langdon and Weller are rotating on forward flanks too. We still have goal scoring mids.

Throw Fyfe/Mundy into the mix as well...From Tabs-McCarthy-Kersten-Fyfe/Mundy gives some really good height spread.

Tabs cited by the MRP for striking!

Matt Taberner, Fremantle, has been charged with striking Michael Hurley, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between Fremantle and Essendon, played at Domain Stadium on Sunday May 7, 2017.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the groin. The incident was classified as a $15000 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Medical report from EssendonFC? Bunch of softcocks...literally.

I call it Tough Man Tony Abbott tactics.

Still... I remember Daniel Kerr punching a hawks player at Tassie in the groin around 2003-5, Kerr got cleared and it was much more lethal than Tabs hit.

It should be $1500, typical quality out from AFL.

Also, I don't think he hit him in the groin, but can't find a decent replay of it.
At 0.18 in the video.

If Tabs hit Hurley in the groin, Hurley should borrow Daniher's mo and join the porno industry.

Edit: Actually I take it back, it looks like Tabs did give Hurley a flat left bag.

Meh. There is a poster that keep banging on Tabs being "too soft". Happy to see him show some aggression and that he'll not take crap from his defender :thumbsu:

people were saying the exact same thing last year after the Brisbane Lions game when he kicked 5.

Lets see how he goes next week before anointing him as the next messiah please.

Yup.
The thing is, even back when Tabs is dropping marks left right and centre, we still play better with him in the team. If he continue to hold on to his marks, he'll be an invaluable part of our offense. We really needed a tall target like him in the team.

But yeah, one week at a time. Hopefully, he've sorted out whatever that is affecting his marking and be consistent with it. Hopefully, he'll still stand up with more attention from the opposition next week.

My take is Hurley should be pleased - contact was only made because Hurley was shaping up like Stephen Michael!

Now that he's added the ability to pinch hit in the ruck to his bow, he'll be even more valuable to our side than he was before (and before he made us a 2 goal a game better side). Half the contribution he gave last night is a very good contribution from a 2nd ruckman.

Learning to ruck is a long process, and the best you can hope for from an inexperienced 2nd ruck is that they don't give away too many free kicks. Taberner did very well last night and even won 6 hitouts of his own, which is far more than anyone else we've tried in that position has done.

IIRC he did that twice yesterday. Old mate behind me in 311 yells out 'he's back!' whenever Tabs drops an uncontested mark so hopefully I have a decent running tally.

The lack of ruck ability was major problem number 1 against him, he seems to have dealt with that. Now it's only the easy uncontested drops and a realisation that he can't kick over 45m which need to be corrected (which is odd because he's a decent field kick) and we have a player.

Only point of caution is that the Bombers defence is potato. Hurley is a fine player but Dea is an absolute ******* spud. Hartley no better at his age.

That said; with Cam Mac and Kersten in it is no longer a case of ignoring the lumbering ruckman in our forward 50 and just double teaming a cooked Pav and a tentative Taberner.
