Maybe I shouldn't keep reading all these complaints on the subreddit for the game (and there are a metric shitload of them) but everyone seems to miss the point - that the new system is meant to encourage casual players into the gym system.
'But spoofers keep pumping up the gyms' - 100 upvotes. Well, no they aren't. They gain nothing by having a Pokemon in there indefinitely. It's only been a day so - degradation will take a while - but rest assured that given enough time the gyms will change colour because there is no incentive for retaining a gym for months on end. There are already posters with evidence of their 2800-3000 CP monster more than halving overnight.
If they want to spoof and have control of all gyms in ten suburbs for bragging rights - well, there was nothing in the old version stopping them from doing so. But in the old version they could then collect coins no problem with no resistance or effort - in this one they have to wait for them to get knocked out and it's not like their Pokemon will give them 2000 coins after being in there for a week. For a spoofer who wants coins, it is actually in their best interests to perhaps boost their gyms a little in the first few hours, then let someone eventually take them out for the sweet coins.
Someone will then point out that the spoofer could just use multiple accounts to cycle the gym for the coins a few hours afterwards, and then boost it back up for their preferred gym defender Pokemon - so how is this different from the old system then?
It does take a while to knock off a Level 6 gym but it's not much different from taking down a similar old gym. If you wait a while, it gets even easier due to natural attrition of CP and the lack of incentive to keep them there. With each gym now being a Pokestop with a bias towards healing items, it's a piece of cake given enough spare time.
In my neighbourhood I already see sub Level 30 accounts who I've never seen before sprinkled around gyms that used to be on lockdown for months. Somehow I don't think they're complaining about the new system. There are real issues (eg 1 coin/hour, high minimum time requirement, the battling being incredibly laggy at times) but some of the common whines are facepalm worthy.

Took my raid pass and went back home. Hopefully I'll find another raid with more people later on.
