Agree to disagree on Lever. Will leave it at that.
i dont really have a feeling one way or another.
Really rate Lever and would love him at Essendon.
But we'd need to be brutally honest with a couple of our defenders and look to move them on. I couldn't see the bottom 2 of Hurley, Lever, Ambrose, Hartley, Gleeson, Ridley, Brown and Dea ever getting a game short of a disastrous run of injuries.

If we're looking at 500k a year and our 1st rd pick this year for Lever, i'd do that.
But i'd look to move Brown and Dea (for example) on.

You would have to trade one or both of Dea & Brown imo and hope Ambrose & Hartley are happy to eventually become depth coverage.
Because Hurley - Lever - Ridley would be our tall 3 and possibly we play one of Ambrose or Hartley, depending on the role.
Eventually Hurley retires we could be set with Lever, Ridley, Hartley & Ambrose plus McKenna & McGrath, or Gleeson if McGrath shifts to the middle.

2018-2022 would be
Ridley Lever Hartley/Ambrose
McKenna Hurley McGrath

After that
Ridley Hartley Ambrose
McKenna Lever McGrath

Worthy target, but like JJ - expensive for a need that wouldn't be top 5 on the list.
Stoppage mids x2
Young KPF
Young Ruck
Small Forward

That would be my list.

Other teams have a much greater need for Lever and will offer more. We don't need him and will rightfully offer not much. Trade Dea and Brown? For what? Combine them and pick 67 for pick 68? Those guys probably wouldn't be on the list at any other club. Haven't they both been delisted by other clubs? Dea was, can't recall how Brown came across.

Would cost much more than that surely. More like 1st round + 2nd rounder + 850k+

Yeah no to Lever for mine. Would cost too much and we already have a strong defense with some good options. If we spend resources on a key defender then we can't go and get a gun mid. I know which one I want.

Plus I actually am a fan of Ambrose and Hartley. They aren't big names yet but they are coming along nicely. Can get to that tier below the genuine stars (so not like Rance, Hurley, Lever, McGovern etc) but with the rest of the guys that are first defenders at most clubs.

@850k, we'd be wasting money.
Not that he isn't worth it, but we have his role covered and that cash could be thrown at Tom Lynch (as an example)

You would move them for whatever you can get.
they wouldn't play. I'd look at fringe mids or anyone where we think we'd get use out of.

I agree we shouldn't be looking at picking up Lever as we would have to throw up big money and big picks. 850k would probably be unders or at least on the low side of his range tbh, especially given the recent increase in salary cap.

My point is that you won't get anything for them, so you're saying we should de-list them, just because we get in one extra player. Plenty of room in the VFL and on the rookie list for fringe mids.

Lever is an absolute gun but he most definitely will not be leaving the Crows.
Would love to use our 1st for a KPF as a 1st priority, if none are worth our 1st pick we pick up an explosive mid.

We are still in such a unique position with the salaray cap increasing so significantly and our apparent money in the coffers (we were in the market for Jaegar O'Meara remember) we still need to pay the minimum 92.5% of the salary cap. We have some serious money to play with.

Do we keep a hold of it or go hard for the best? Josh Kelly would be nice, Jacob a Hopper sounds nice, why not go all out for a Luke Parker? A guy with serious talent who is good enough to move up from being a #3 or #4 midfielder to a #1 midfielder with us
He's no Steinberg

We should be dangling our 2018 1st rounder in front of GWS for Hopper and hitting the draft hard again this year.

Watson, stanton and kelly will all be gone at seasons end in my opinion. Hocking and Bird also likely gone.

i guess Lever is the flavour of the month now?

Dunno why we'd waste our time chasing him with the defense we already have. He'd cost a lot and not offer a great deal more than the current players do. For the same price we could get a very good inside mid who would improve the list a lot more than a defender would.

We should be open to trading this years first. A clear top 5 standout we probably wont get access to will see us pick a kid with some but not alot of AFL attribites with our first rounder somewhere between 8 - 15.

Some ok kids likely still be available in the second and third rounds, only thing holding me back is us reaching for needs and grabbing (arguarbly) this years ruck/fwd in Sam Hayes with the resulting pick.

Okay forget lever then. What about Zac Guthrie as a future inside mid option? Big boy. Long way from his prime yet being in year 8. Beautiful kick of the footy too
You mean Cam?

Haven't done this for a whie and thought it'd be nice to after a diabolical loss to Brisbane.

Out of contract guys;

Mark Baguley (+1 year)
Craig Bird (delist)
Mitch Brown (+1 year)
Brendon Goddard (+1 year)
Josh Green (50:50 still for mine)
Heath Hocking (retired)
Ben Howlett (delist)
James Kelly (retire)
Connor McKenna (+3 years)
Jackson Merrett (delist)
Alex Morgan (delist)
Darcy Parish (+3 years)
Brent Stanton (retire)
Jobe Watson (retire)
David Zaharakis (+ 2 years)

Sam Draper (+ 1 year)
Yestin Eades (delisted already)
Jake Long (delist)
Shaun McKernan (+ 1 year)
Ben McNeice (+ 1 year)

Would give us 8 spots on the senior list and another 2 on the rookie list for changes.

Trades/Free Agents;

Lukas Webb (Western Bulldogs) - 187cm/82kg inside midfielder who was first transformed from a half back flanker. Has dominated games at VFL level this year and not looked out of place when given an opportunity at AFL level.
trade;
Bulldogs recieve; Essendon 2017 2nd round pick (currently pick 25)
Essendon recieve; Lukas Webb

Matthew Shaw (Gold Coast Suns) - Likely delisted at years end as the club moves on some players of note. Fits the right age bracket for us and could be a useful role player in a position we don't have a great deal of depth in (midfield link up). Would cost us nothing but cap space as a DFA. At 25, he still has plenty of time left in him having shown his ability to play decent football this year.

Draft; Head to the draft with 6 picks and a further two in the rookie draft.

2017 AFL Draft:

Without knowing anything about the draft class just focus on our needs will ya dodo?
- Inside midfielder x 2
- Small forward
- Key forward
- ruckman
- outside midfielder
- utility

For all those querying hoppers pace, looks back at his draft year profile. Pace wasn't a huge issue back then because his overhead marking made him a forward option we hem resting. Would be a great get.

What do people think are good options for bargain basement gap fillers? Someone to do a decent job for a year or 2 while we develop the kids, and then act as depth. Anthony Miles smashes it in the VFL and has shown ability at the top level. Unlucky not to be playing AFL level right now with richmond, and hopefully grumpy enough about it to request a trade. When I've seen him, he seems to have the kind of effort in his game that we needed today.
We need to do what melbourne did with Bernie Vince, but for cheaper if possible.
