If you can tell me where we're going to get that veteran KPF protector for Curnow and McKay that isn't going to cost us an arm and a leg and isn't Levi Casboult then I'm all ears. But I think you'll find that the reality of the situation isn't as hopeful as what we'd like to think that it is.

There are no free agents that would be cheap enough to pick up and do the same type of job close to the level that Levi is capable of. Would be a waste of money and resources.

I am not dismissive to the theory, I just work on probabilities and possibilities. Possible that a club is stupid enough to offer a band 3 contract, but not probable

Re Geelong pick - they finished 10th - we got their first round pick I.e. Pick 9 before academy picks etc.

Think this ended up being Charlie at pick 12.

Was not a "late first rounder".

Now i can see us being able to draft a good player at 3 and 38 but with all the talk of weak drafts i am not confident beyond that. The list you have is long and even with picks coming in for Gibbs and Cas i don't see how we can cut that deep.

Menzel traded for Kerridge + Pick 28 (Pick did the rounds, until North, who selected Hibberd)

Lachie Henderson traded for Geelong 2016 first round pick

Picks, 28, 77, 95 + Geelong's 2016 1st rounder(Brisbane ended up with this pick and selected Berry) traded for Lamb, Plowman, Sumner, Phillips, + Pick 8 ((GWS finished 11th in 2015, they had pick 8, pushed back to pick 10 due to academy selections (Hooper + Mills), we used it on Harry))

Thats all well and good, but players we are getting at those late picks are likely to be delisted in a couple of years too.

Which is why they won't be getting more priority picks. Lots of quality youngsters on their list, most of them signing contract extensions, new coach with clear vision. Sounds familiar, yeah?

Demons - Hogan, McDonald, Wiedeman, Pedersen, Gawn, Spencer
Hawks - O'Brien, Roughy, McEvoy, Ceglar, Schoenmakers, Gunstan, Brand, Lewis.
Pies - Strange, have tall options, but refuse to play them, why would they want another one
Freo - Griffen, Sandilands, Darcy, Taberner, Pearce, Clarke
Tigers - Could be an option, but they seem to think the new trend is what the Dogs did last year, which we all know was an exception

Casboult is still only on target to kick only 35 goals this season, despite his improved efficiency and of course his manager will test the water as he did last time, but I suspect he will re-sign

There is blue running through my veins, but that is a big difference to bathing in a pool of blu-loo.

But instead of me refuting your theory, would you target a player of Casboult's prowess and pay him $650K a year for the next 2 years?

35 goals if thats what Cas ends up with imo is a very good haul . Taking into consideration he spends a bit of time in the ruck our not so slick (being very generous here) ball movement forward . And being in a struggling side i think his 35 is 50 in the better sides . I think were underselling Levi's efforts this year .

This is a business decision. Pride and hurt feelings have no place in this choice.

It would be like buying a house and not applying for the first home buyer grant because you dont want a handout. Idiocy.

Interesting observation in the HUN about Swans Rising Star nomination and the rest of their backline - all recruited as "rookies" - now that is seriously smart/clever recruiting and player development.

I.e.

Melican and backline buddies Dane Rampe, Heath Grundy, Nic Newman, Jake Lloyd and Nick Smith are all rookie success stories drafted by Swans recruiter Kinnear Beatson.
