You two are completely misunderstanding me. I am not saying it isn't important. I am saying that they shouldn't have to do this in the first place. It shouldn't matter what sexuality a person is.
Ahhh ... but we aren't at that point yet :) I agree it's completely personal, but we also need to understand that until it is a non-issue - coming out needs to be supported / demystified. When role models show that the fear and stigma around being open about who you are is not something you need to hold on to ... we should applaud it.

God i can't wait for the day its a non-issue. It must be hard having someone look at who you like to sleep with and define who you are around it.

I mean does Chris Judd have his footballing career framed or influenced by the fact he's straight?

You are already being disrespectful starting a stupid thread when it hasn't happened yet with name's being floated around. probably not the smartest thread to go early on if you wanted to be sued and to be respectful you shouldn't be going early on call like this..
Huh?

Why is it disrespectful?

Why would anyone need to be sued?

Not that I want to give too much airtime to this position but ... if a hetrosexual person wrongly described as being gay is cause for legal action - can a gay person sue for being assumed to be hetrosexual? Or is one a positive and the another a negative in your eyes?

Anyway, the OP mentioned no-one by name only "two prominent AFL players will be coming out as a homosexual couple" which is definitely thread worthy and anything but disrespectful. I think the lack of names was more out of understanding of the process, than anything else.

It's getting there. The AFLW league showed how ridiculous this notion was. I'm with you, and hope that changes in attitude flow from moments like these - and help show the ridiculousness of related issues like marriage equality etc...

It shouldn't, but it's always going to take one or two to take that first step to ease the pressure on others in the future. It's not about throwing it in anyone's face.

I never understand that whole "we don't need to make a big deal out of it" argument that people put forward. Seems like a lot of people just use it as a defense mechanism because they 'don't like them gays.'

What pressure? Gay is entirely entirely mainstream now days.

Put your self in there shoe's, is it your name being floated around on a internet forum as being gay? I think it's a big private decision in sporting history in Australia for who ever is involved and we should be respectful (tread water). let them come out and celebrate it and with the public making it there moment to shine when they are ready to without us starting a forum guessing people's name's.

Mmmm, nope, don't think that was the reason the thread was started. If we are going to second guess the follow up posting of every thread - then no discussion would ever take place.

I would suggest that being "floated" as gay on an internet forum would be very low on most AFL footballers list of things they give a sh!t about !!

If people start attacking someone or questioning them as people or footballers because of their sexuality or even their perceived sexuality - that needs to be called out - but I think what you are describing is a censorship step that isn't reality.

You can call me gay or hetro or whatever you like, that's not offensive or disrespectful to me - it's just that some of your guesses will be wrong. It's when you attribute some sort of characteristic or negative trait to that sexuality that you're heading directly into offensive behaviour territory.

So ... Gary is gay - isn't offensive. Gary is gay and that's why he is so soft in the contest - is offensive. Gary is gay and that's why he shouldn't be allowed near young boys - is offensive.

Agreed?

I think the fact that no-one really gives a shit is great. It means we can have this "event" of the first "coming out" of an AFL footballer - and even better if they are a couple IMO - and then everyone can go back to not giving a shit officially.

Seriously, anyone who is under the age of about 40 honestly couldn't give a **** where someone chooses to park their bits. Once this is done with and everyone is utterly supportive (or more accurately, completely unfazed by it) then superseded attitudes can be completely disregarded for good

I hope the Pies player wants to come out on his own volition and isn't being pressured by my Club or the AFL to do so.

I can see why they would 'come out' on the footy show. One good reason is because they at least have some control over how it's all handled.

100% in the future the media would find out that they were in a relationship. You can guarantee the headlines would be like

'secret gay relationship hidden from clubs'

or something along those lines - being derogatory/inflammatory. This way they can put a positive media spin on it.

I've never heard a 'coming out' rumour that hasn't been going to happen on The Footy Show.

I don't understand why TFS is the big one to appear on.

It is quite odd, but TFS was historically the biggest football media show for a long. It isn't anymore (or at least it isn't significantly larger than other options), but there still aren't any real alternatives for such a thing. On The Couch is for genuine football discussion, Front Bar doesn't take itself seriously enough for that (nor does Bounce), Talking Footy and Footy Classified are both laughable, Marngrook is too obscure, AFL360 requires dealing with Robbo, and Open Mike means Mike pressing the issue for 30mins (likely with some uncomfortable/insensitive questions). When those are your choices, you may as well follow the money because TFS has the biggest chequebook.

You're honestly naive enough to think the media or at least some "journalists" aren't across this already?

some probably know - and have elected to keep their mouth shut. But it only takes one

Who said the op is even right and it turns out to be false? then you have a massive rumour saying player's are gay when they are not and it's very disrespectful to the men and families involved. If they are gay it's still disrespectful as they should be allowed to be the first afl player's to come out to the world on there terms with out it being started or assumed on here. Tread water and let it come out in a natural process when they choose to because It's none of our trucking business in the first place. Hope it's not a look at me thread starting fake news.

Some definitely know and would no doubt be trying like mad to get the story from those involved so they can be the first to put it out there. The damage to reputation and credibility of going off without the ok from the players is too much to risk

You are getting lost mate.

If the OP is right, then the players will come out on their terms on the Footy show.
If the OP is wrong, then nothing happens.

No-one's families or children are being disrespected. Take a breath.

yeh ok I understand. I'm sure they would like to get the story from them so that they can put a positive spin on it and come out as the guy/girl who broke the story. Maybe that would be a better way to 'come out'. I suppose though if they were to do it on tv, telling people themselves allows them to control what is said even more (not be misquoted/misrepresented). Nonetheless, I can see why you would want control over the narrative as the media seems very predatory.

edit: what i'm trying to say is I don't think they would be doing it for attention.
