I would say Bont has more "speeeeecial games" but Kelly is damn consistent!!!

FWIW 2017 stats

Bont 23.8 possessions (12.3contested), 1.0 goals, 6.5 tackles

Kelly 29.8 possessions (11.6 contested) 0.7 goals, 6.3 tackles

Kelly has played 17 games - only had less than 27 possessions 3 times.

IMHO - he is underrated because he is not playing in Melbourne.

If he was playing for a big Melbourne club everyone would be dribbling over him!!!

He's still a kid - he plays inside/outside, he accumulates possessions, he is a beautiful kick, he tackles, he kicks goals.

FFS what more does he have to do to make you happy???

He will be an absolute jet!!!!!!

That he will be a gun is absolutely not in doubt.

There are only 3 questions.

Does he want to play for us?

Do his salary expectations fit within our budget?

Can SOS and GWS negotiate a trade deal?

Exception to the rule, but I'd sooner Kelly than Bontempelli.

It's unfortunate that he hasn't been adorned a special name that makes you 20% more powerful, ala "The Bont" or "The Package" but this guy is there every week. Give me players that have good games 4 out of 5 and I'll show you a potential premiership team..........I mean more than one premiership.

If Simmo retires at year end then yes as a DFA I would.

Yep. And should already have a good relationship with SOS. Playing for us he'll have a hell of a lot going for him.

Looking at next year, if we lose Gibbs then we need to bring Kelly in or else we are going to struggle in the middle again. We can't continue to finish last every year because that will mentally scar our young players.

I doubt we would let Gibbs go if we dont get a replacement lined up. He is still contracted. Not for draftpicks.

And that's the thing, Adelaide don't have any quality mids apart from Sloane and if they did, they wouldn't be trading them to us.

The only way to mitigate the loss of Gibbs is to bring in Kelly.

If we get pick #9 from them (Demons give them that pick for Lever) then we can take that to the draft and use pick 2 for Kelly.

It has been suggested we couple pick 2+9 for Kelly+Hopper which would be a pretty good outcome but I highly doubt GWS will let them both go. If Kelly goes then they'll give Hopper more cash to stay.

Another thing to consider is if Gibbs requests a trade again, then we may have to let him go because we can't keep a guy who doesn't want to be here. It's possible we take pick 9 and maybe a 2018 2nd for him and then we don't get Kelly. That'll put us in a position to finish last again unfortunately.

Plenty of folk on here want us to "go to the draft" "build our own".

Nice idea but the likelihood of us plucking a mid that takes off like Ollie Wines or Bontempelli is pretty slim.

It's a romantic notion, but we can't allow Cripps and now SPS to take all the burden of getting the ball out from stoppages.
We need to get coverage inside first and outside thereafter. A balance of both would be ideal.

Every team is capable of finishing down the bottom of the table, should injuries really take hold.
Unless that's the case for us next year, we cannot finish bottom four.

The outcome of a very low finish, would be that the young guys haven't stepped up.
I want to see significantly better years from Weitering, Pickett, Byrne, Fisher, Williamson, Cuningham, Macreadie, Polson etc than we've seen this year.
No excuses.

A few points .
You are locked in on Kelly which is fine but there is a very real chance he may not nominate us as his club of choice so it may pay to at least consider other options .

If Kelly and Hopper both tell GWS they're out, the Giants don't have the option of saying we are not going to lose you both .
They are both out of contract and the Giants will have to do the best they can in dealing with the nominated clubs .

If Gibbs does again request a trade to Adelaide and pick 9 is offered , Silvagni will take it and run.
There would be no 2nd rounder being thrown in on top of pick 9 .
