Past James Rose - delisted 2019

Read an article yesterday that said Mills hadn't missed a session in the pre-season...if there's no setbacks between now and round 1 I'd be very surprised if he wasn't playing. I've got a feeling that his 'injuries' last year were handled extremely cautiously
Fat lot of good that did us at draft time.

They handled him cautiously last year and still will. His lack of a season last year, he played 10 or less games, will be an issue I should think. The coaches will want to get as much footy into the lad before throwing him in at the deep end. In the meantime they have Hewett, who is tracking really well and his pre-season has so far been super apparently, to utilise. I know we are all keen to see Mills out there but I am also keen to look at a lad who has had two full seasons now and came to us as a young recruit. Patience.

I really hope we take the opportunity this year of playing forwards as forwards and not use some midfield guys to muck around up front.

I think with the new interchange system the mids will find themselves resting more on the bench. This will open up the old specialist forward role more. Forwards and backs will get less time on the bench in favour of mids. So you might just get your wish.

You could argue though that Mills already has more NEAFL runs on the board than Hewett...I think they're both going to be very handy players for us but I don't think our coaching hierarchy will hold Mills back just for the sake of it...hopefully they both impress enough in the NAB cup to both play in Round 1

Um I don't see how Mills can have more NEAFL runs on the board when he played a handful of games in 2014 and a handful in 2015. Hewett has played 2014, nearly all games and 2015 most games. Your logic is flawed. you are right in one regard. If mills really turns it on in the NAb matches he will probably start the season. But he would have to be exceptional like Heenz.

Perhaps just in his general impact. Getting 40+ disposals as an underage player is impressive as hell, even if it is the NEAFL :p

Wolftone exactly what Stew said here. His best games (which were as a 16 year old) are statistically as good if not better than George's better games.

Also in Mills' advantage will be his ability to play forward or back as well whereas I think it's midfield or bust for Hewett

Hewett is a fair way back in the pecking order, don't see him playing and gone end of the year. Onto Rose, good effort, and that photo would suggest he could carry a bit more muscle eventually. Gotta feeling about this guy.

He's a bit broader across the shoulders than I thought he was. Maybe it's just the shirt. my biggest reservation with him last season was he looked pretty slight.
Agreed. He seems to have spent the summer running and in the gym. I recon he was given some very strict guide lines to follow over the break for a chance at making the round 1 team.

That's all well and good but he didn't play last year for most of the year and that will put him back a bit. in fact Mills only played 3 NEAFL games all year where he got 20 disp in R.15, 9 disp in R.21 and 21 in the final. On the contrary Hewett played 16 had over 30 disposals 4 times, once in a final. The only disappointing performance was against UWS, GWS seconds, with 9 but even Isaac only got 9 that day too. Nine of his 16 matches returned over 25 disposals. He was very good and set up play from the bounces.

Don't underestimate this young bloke as he is a talent. Mills might be too but he is coming from a bit behind the eightball due to lack of match conditioning. By the way what he did in 2014 doesn't count and the side he did it against was not that good by the way. I'm sure Mitchell probably got 60 that day. That is what I am talking about. Mills can play back and forward and yes Hewett is a one trick pony but he is a very good one trick pony and can only get better. I would hate to lose him and find him lining up for the opposition, I hear Adelaide are looking for a talented mid.

By the way Perris got 40 against Eastlake and is no longer with us. Food for thought. not saying that will happen to Mills, he is far too good for that but Peris isn't a bad player, just injury prone.

6 goals in the reserves, doesn't seem close to selection. Will we see him again before his contract is up next year?

You try getting a game in our side we have a bucket load of small forwards now.

That Carlton game was more than enough James Rose for me. He'd need to be dominating every week to get a game next season i'd think

I'd be shocked if he wasn't traded even for a packet of chips this year, late pick, maybe Carlton want another freebie.
