No to Trengove please. Will cost us any compo from Casboult and is barely an upgrade in some respects and not an upgrade in others.

If we are going to force Levi out, it must be for a much better player, not someone about par.
Could come down to contracts.

If Levi wants 4 years, which he should as it'll probably be his last contract, i doubt we can give him that unless its structured in a way that wont affect our cap going .

Maybe Trengove will take a 2 year deal. It might be as simple as that. With the desire to maintain flexibility going forward being a strong reason to make a change.

I was hoping we let Gibbs and Casboult go. Trade a future first for Kelly. Take 2 and Gibbs' pick(s) to the draft this year, trade another future first next year to get back into 2018 draft and line up FAs and Father/sons.

But people are precious about next year's draft pick :(

2018 draft top 5 picks are elite and the rest of the top 10 are'nt shabby either, it will all be a very good draft.
if we could snare Lukosius or either if the King brothers, Ben Silvagni and Willi Hickmont it would be amazing .
Two elite talls finally and a quality small. It will be a mighty draft .

If Casboult is in fact offered a 4 year contract he will be band 3 compo imo. I know this has been done to death on here but band 3 = top 30%, most players get given 2 year contracts. If we are only going to get a third round pick I expect we will offer him enough to keep him.
He might not sign a 2year deal unless its mega $$. He has a family to worry about and this will probably be his last contract.

Can you see him getting another deal at 30yo? I can't. But a 4 year deal would take him to 32yo.

I think mids will still be a priority next year. A tall with our first pick and also Ben mightn't be the best option. Of course, we'll (most likely) have the option of the best mid in the draft but are we willing to miss out on Rayner(?) this year to bet on finishing bottom 3 again?

Bolton and co. will be predicting Kelly/Hopper/Rayner(?)/Trengove will push us up a few positions.

Would trade Buckley for Balic in a heartbeat.

Love Dyl's attitude, but he's so far down the pecking order at Carlton it's in his best interests to seek other opportunities.

Freo could probably find a spot for him in their forward line as a replacement for Ballantyne. Would also allow them to use Walters in the middle a bit more often.
Boekhorst for Balic is a more realistic option. wont cost much considering he has hardly played

Do you see him as a reasonable replacement, if we lose Casboult to play a forward/ruck option?

No. He'd be a perfect KPD-Ruck. He lacks the natural instincts of a forward. But with Plowman, Weitering, Marchbank and Jones already down back we wouldn't need him to play there. That takes away much of his effectiveness.

I have a strong feeling that whoever misses out on Lever will jump straight onto Trengrove. He'd bloody perfect at the Western Bulldogs, actually. Not quite the defender Lever projects to being but given that he's a capable second ruck he'd be a natural.

If you read our boards you need to take any talk of Trengove in context

Is a very very good shutdown defender. Hugely under rated as a shutdown chb in the league. Isn't a great rebounding back but great to pair with other rebounders.

As a 2nd ruck he is very good as well.

As a key forward he sucks.

Port supporters hate we play him there. We have lots of depth of key defenders.

If you want to play him as a Backman / ruck he is a super pick up. As a forward not so good.

As for any talk of salary cap tightness is bullshit lol. Just journos that hate port peddling shit for port hating readers.

We were apparently tight before signing monfries , before white , before paddy , before Dixon lol.

we've lost the salaries of schulz Carlile monfries and white plus extra 2 mil in cap plus port was one of only 2 teams with zero players with salaries tied to cap increases.
Thanks for joining the conversation, what do you think of his ruckwork? Is he a tap ruckman, or does he get a bit of the ball around the ground?

Unfortunately for Boek he's a delist candidate and will likely be seen as such by Freo.

Unless we're doing a dog act like Collins for Grigg, I reckon we'll cough up a fair offer.

Realistically, Balic is a delist candidate himself. He's an end of second round selection in a relatively shallow draft. He has only played 4 senior games for a team who hasn't made the finals in either year that he's been at the club. I recognize that he was injured most of his first year but he's had chances this year and taken mostly personal leave. (Edit/add: Reminds me of Stephen Oliver. A great talent that we had on our list in the 90's but was too homesick to ever realize it in the VFL/AFL. It happens and sadly you could tell on the day that he was drafted that it was going to happen to Balic. The way that he went about it shows me that he knew that the Dockers were interested in him and that he had already given signs that he wasn't going to be very receptive of them drafting him. In other words, they should've known better than to waste a pick).

The only players to have played 20+ games who were drafted after him:

  • Rhys Mathieson
  • Jack Silvagni (father/son)
  • Mitchell Brown (a mature age recruit for Essendon, 21 games last year)
  • Tom Phillips (over-age recruit by Collingwood)
  • Sam Menegola (a mature age recruit by Geelong)
  • Michael Hartley (another mature age recruit by Essendon)
That's four over or mature age recruits and a father/son selection.

Balic isn't worth much. If we have to give up anything for him then I see it as being Blaine and a swap of lower draft picks.

The West Australian say that they'd be hopeful to take something in the 40s. That's our third round draft pick. I'd give them Blaine, our fourth and swap our thirds.

I think another team will either wait for him to be delisted or wait for him to be delisted and has an exceptional year at VFL level.

I can't imagine after 6 mediocre years at VFL level that he will make the leap to exceptional once delisted!

I think it was Nostradamus that predicted "Buckley will be delisted in 2017 & never be listed by an AFL team again".......................I tend to agree with him

Yeah, well Baba Vanga predicted Buckley would get delisted and that it would be a catalyst for the end of the world.

This is the darkest timeline.

I reckon Boek may save himself with his recent efforts

Balic is a potential player.
Boek isn't

Where's your proof?

Boek has shown more than Balic has at the AFL level.

Boek has shown that he can adjust to the mental challenges of moving across the country whereas Balic has not.

Proof?

It's an opinion. Boeks had three years and shown what he has, which ain't enough to save him.

Balic hasn't failed yet. He might but he hasn't yet.

The best thing Boek has is he's less likely to get delisted than Bucks and has three games to show something. So not dead yet Burton the gurney heading to the ER.

Boekhorst has also performed strongly in the VFL. He'll get another year with us or go to another AFL team.
He might, but I still think Freo will want more for Balic.

Frankly, based on Boeks efforts the only way I'd take him at Freo is if he was delisted or steak knives.

Maybe that's just me and he still has three games to increase his footy currency.

I would think getting Trengove to leave Port would cost about the same as keeping Casboult.. give or take a bit.
In which case i'd rather keep Levi as his skill set (fwd/ruck) is a bit more useful to us in our current position.

If we go down this path, I would assume Levi's departure isn't all about money. Which of course is entirely possible.
