St Kilda kicked 15 goals at the Adelaide oval this year.

9 of those goals came in the two final quarters.

I highly doubt a team has ever had so few goals kicked at a venue without a goalless quarter yet also without kicking more than a single goal in six of the quarters.

We still haven't won at Adelaide oval.

Nor at Perth Stadium - not to worry, both of these "hoodoos" will be overturned in 2018.

University were younger than their opponents in all 126 VFL matches. They were never closer in age than the 0.50 years per player v St.Kilda in R1 1910, a game they won by 22 points. Of the seven lowest age deficits, they won five games, by 15, 21, 22, 25 & 26 points, suggesting that pound for pound they weren't as bad as their record indicates.

Non finalists Melbourne and GWS met in the final round of the 2015 season, the Demons defeating the Giants.

When Round 1 2016 kicked off, Melbourne and GWS fans no doubt felt a sense of dejavu, with the Demons and Giants again facing off on Easter Saturday.

While it is not unique for teams meeting in the last round of one season to meet again in the first round of the next, it is remarkable that the two teams have not played each other again until today - an amazingly long time for teams not to have played each other.

With the exception of teams withdrawing during the World Wars, are there any examples of teams that have gone longer without meeting each other?

So, we're looking for more than 40 rounds between H&A games:
2016 - R1 ... 21 H&A games
2017 - 19 H&A games ... R20

One interesting one is St Kilda and North who played in R2-1943 but not again until R11-1944.

But the record might be Adelaide and Geelong who played in R1-2014 but not again until R23-2015 (44 rounds). This was because their R14-2015 game in Adelaide was cancelled due to the death of Phil Walsh.

Excluding 2000 which started and finished early due to the Olympics, 2017 will be the equal earliest finish for a H&A season of 20+ rounds.

Thanks Red & Black - I was wondering if the cancelled Adelaide vs. Geelong match in 2015 might be a factor in this, but wasn't sure when the Crows and Cats played in 2014. It's another interesting Geelong vs. Adelaide statistic, with these teams holding the record for the greatest disparity in margins between the teams in the same season. In Round 8 1992 Geelong defeated Adelaide by 123-points at Kardinia Park, but in Round 23 1992 Adelaide beat Geelong by 91 points at Football Park in Adelaide.

At the other end of the scale, not counting finals, what is the shortest amount of time between meetings in a season, not counting finals? One anomaly in the fixtures I found was in 1988, when Hawthorn played the Brisbane Bears in pouring rain at Princes Park in Round 12 (possibly the worst jumper clash match I have ever seen - check it out on Youtube), then played them again just 3 weeks later in Round 15 in warm sunny conditions at Carrara on the Gold Coast.

I'm not sure if teams have ever been scheduled to meet in successive weeks or 2 weeks apart in the AFL/VFL, but the short-lived Western Reds rugby league team played Cronulla in successive weeks in both 1995 & 1996. And in the WAFL in 2013, Swan Districts played Peel Thunder in Round 19, had a bye in Round 20, then the Swans again played the Thunder in Round 21.
 
Brisbane was 1.50 years younger than the next youngest club this round (22.98, Gold Coast 24.48).

Aside from GWS in 14 rounds between 2012-14, the last time such a margin was recorded was by Carlton in the 2007 Kreuzer Cup (22.25, Richmond 24.00).

Prior to that it was a rebuilding Collingwood in R2 & 7, 2000.

The highest margin ever recorded was 2.61 years by Collingwood, 1923 R1 (23.54, Fitzroy 26.15). That team featured six young future premiership players from 'The Machine' years 1927-30 (Coventry x 2, Chesswas, Wescott, Wilson, Poulter).

Dean Solomon's interim appointment as Gold Coast coach uncovers quite a range of stats.

First coach:

Drafted in the 1997 AFL Draft.
Who debuted in 1998.
Born in 1980.
Of a Queensland side born in the '80's.
born in 1980 and, in turn, the '80's who was coached by Kevin Sheedy.
Who played for Bendigo Pioneers.
Out of Solomon, Tarrant and Alvey.

Second coach born in the '80's. (Essendon's Matthew Egan was the first and he was born in 1983).
Both Solomon and Egan were interim coaches and their previous coaches (Hird and Eade) were sacked in R20. (2015 vs 2017.)

He becomes the youngest Gold Coast Suns coach.
He is the 3rd of the 2000 premiers to be coach. (Hird and Hardwick the others.)

At 189cm and 102kgs, Solomon becomes the tallest and heaviest Suns coach in their short existence.

I raised this one last year and one of the gurus brought out a few games where they started with even later letters in the alphabet.

One game Melbourne had this year their first name alphabetically was Frost, obviously even later than Franklin.

Goggin, Newman and Ian Nankervis probably helped a bit by playing in pre-Waverley seasons before 1970 where 9 and 10 games were played at KP. Until ground rationalisation in the mid 90's Geelong played 9 a season...and i think there was one year of playing 10 at KP in the late 80's or early 90's. But in recent years it's been 7 or 8.

I'll check the game tallies of the aforementioned players at KP.

Sam Newman..............88 wins from 132 games. Given Geelong were pretty crappy for most of the 70's, that win percentage is still pretty high.

Jimmy Bartel...............86 wins, 2 draws from just 101 games

Ian Nankervis..............83 wins from 138 games

Bill Goggin...................81 wins and a draw from 113 games

Andrew Mackie.............79 wins from 91 games

Corey Enright...............78 wins, 2 draws from 103 games

If the likes of Selwood, Hawkins and H.Taylor play a couple more years too they should challenge for the lead. But with Geelong playing often 24/25 games per season in recent years, playing just 7 a season at KP means they are only nibbling away at that win tally.
