Top Ten Favourite Players: Larrikins and Legends

1 - SOS the house I grew up in football was religion, still is. Had SoS on my curtains and blanket set.
2 - Sticks Same as sos, had him on my curtains and blankets, had a Sticks drink bottle as well as his number being the first one I wore on a home made wool Jersey. I met him too when i was 3, didnt expect him to be so big, his deep voice made me cry.
3 - Kruezer, love the big guy.
4 - Ratten - for a guy that couldnt see, oh boy.
5 - Kouta - 99 prelim.
6 - Murphy - flipped off the collingwood cheer squad, not to mention just a champion dude.
7 - Peter Dean, playing that game he did in the 95 GF with a broken foot. not many tougher.
8 - Docherty I can see him climbing the list before he retires
9 - Fev, The man child, loved his games... never seen so much potential and so little desire to take advantage of it. 2011 could have been very different if we had a fit, determined Fev up front.
10 - Lappin. Should be higher. Put his humber on my jumper after Sos.

Honourable mentions - Scottland, Craig Bradley, Madden, Fraser brown - 99 Prelim.

I could go on. was born in 90 so i missed alot of the 80's stars.

Went out to see a bit of Bullioh v Corryong today at Bullioh. Lovely day and had a couple of nieces plating netball for Corryong. Lo and behold Peter Dean is playing for Bullioh. Age 52. Clearly not as flexible as he once was but still uncompromising. Great champion of the Carlton Football Club.

Many others of course ... honourable mentions to Ted Hopkins and Sticks (Legends), and Des English, Rod Austin and Mark Maclure (Larrikins). Brent Heaver, Dean Rice, Eddie Betts, Matty Lappin and Tom Alvin deserve mentions too ... and Doull or I fall foul of this thread ... Ratts ... Diesel ... Sexton ... Andy McKay ...

My first jumper had Rod Ashman's 14. Was a fan of David Glascott too.

Nicholls, Walls, Barassi, Swan McKay and Crosswell were before my time (my dad had plenty of stories), Keogh was the pin up boy I was told, and Southby, Doull and Jezza were at the end of their careers in my early childhood ...

1. Kouta - 'nuff said

2. Fevola - yeah he was an idiot, though sometimes a loveable one, other times just an idiot, but his ability was absolutely spectacular. Even against modern gameplans, he'd still win the battle with 3 guys hanging off him in a crowded forward line. His natural skill and ability as a forward was off the charts.

3. SOS - legendary family, legendary player. One of the very best of all time.

4. Diesel - I think he's a flog these days as opposed to a larrikin, for obvious reasons but even all that can't take away the positives of the past.

5. Chris Judd - He's Juddy. Dodgy shoulders carried two different teams, and was no doubt a crucial influence on our players, even the likes of Crippa

6. Kreuzer - Just love this guy, absolute heart and soul. Doesn't say much, but his actions onfield speak louder than any words.

7. Simmo - absolute legend through our dark days and still going. Courage is ridiculous for a bloke of his size.

8. Cripps - Kind of Juddy MK2, albeit as a bit of a different sort of player, but the sheer willpower and drive is there. He'll kill teams in his prime.

9. Docherty - mark my words, he's going to be something. Already is in many ways. Displaying courage, grit and determination beyond his years with a calculating footy brain. One of my very favourite players already, ODN hit the nail on the head some time ago saying he's our Luke Hodge. You want a bloke by your side to venture through Hell and back, this is your guy.

10. Andrew Walker - gonna give this guy a nod as he was a pretty handy player when allowed to actually play by his body with some amazing highlights, but he's also proving to be an absolutely top bloke off the field with the club, mentoring and helping out the likes of Samo. Blokes like Walks in this regard are absolute gold.

Brent Crosswell fits both Legends and Larrikins, lived next door to his girlfriend in Canning St. Carlton. Two bikies parked in his spot one day, they would not move so he dropped both of them, then he dropped the bikes.A wild man.He also was a very smart man.

Parked the car on a dirt road and walked across some cow paddock to get to VFL Park Waverley for the 1972 Second-Semi Final vs Richmond. One of the highlights of the day for a 7 year old was to buy the 'big' special edition finals VFL Record.

It had a article on how Geoff Southby had won the Best & Fairest in his first season in 1971. Something clicked with me and he was my hero from that moment on and always wore No.20 during my junior footy days.

That game famously ended in a draw with Jezza having a shot after the siren from about 55 yards out and using a drop kick to try and make the distance.

Brendan Fevola - Hard not to love this big idiot. He was a real Carlton bloke and a fans player. Was a shining light in dark days and a bloody champion player. Have been lucky enough to have had some beers and a couple of darts with him; a genuine lad.

Anthony Koutoufides - Had posters of him on my wall growing up; couldn't believe the size, skill and impact of him at his peak. I rated him that highly I used to consciously carry the ball one handed in games just to be like him (a couple of mistakes were made from time to time :p). Gun. That '99 prelim too... * yeah!

Wayne Johnston - Have become mates with Johnno in the past couple of years and know him his family well. I actually have his AFL life membership in my wallet. I am too young to of truly appreciated his halcyon days but have heard all the stories (rippers) and seen his work on the field; unbelievable player. Have gone to plenty of games with him and he has taken me to functions including the Legends Lunch the last two years which has been phenomenal. Good bloke and great to get on the piss with.

Stephen Kernahan - Actually approached me at said Legends Lunch last year, "So I'm not the biggest bloke in the room for once, how come you're not out there? We need another good ruckman" and bought me beers all day and told me some ripping 'inside info' stories if you like. If you think he's a top bloke already, he's an even better bloke. Great Carlton man and not many have contributed to our club like he has. Could play a bit...

Kade Simpson - What a contributor. Just an absolute warrior, great leader and awesome player. I feel like we are always going that much better when Simmo is out there and he will be irreplaceable. Love his effort, output and attitude.

Eddie Betts - I just loved watching him play and still do to be honest. Along with Fev, he gave me something to cheer for when things were pretty average. Electric player but a shame he never got the best out of himself in Navy Blue. Love Eddie.

Stephen Silvagni - Such a Carlton bloke that his contribution now continues with his great work as a list manager IMO and his offspring hopefully having me cheer for Silvagni's for years to come. Great legacy. Probably one of the best players I've seen take the field to boot.

Matty Allen - Probably a childhood nostalgia choice, especially considering how pissed I was when he left us for * but as a young kid and ruckman myself I always watched him closely. I walked past him and Justin Murphy  one day at the G when they were both injured and thought he was the biggest bloke I've ever seen. I thought it was pretty cool.

Andrew McKay - Just remember him being a rolls-royce and always feeling assured when he had ball in hand. Just never seemed to make a mistake and always made great decisions, including doing the small things. Also happy he is putting his sizable brain to work currently for the good of the club.

Andrew Walker - Was at Princes Park for his debut and saw him take that massive hanger. First game I think i'd been to at our ground. Always thoroughly enjoyed watching him play despite his injuries and perhaps not fulfilling his massive potential. Exciting player, loved his marking.

Local paper "Border Mail" had a small article today that Glenn Manton played in the same league (Upper Murray) as Deany on Saturday. He was up in the district for a comedy night and stayed on to play for Federals (one of the two Corryong teams). Report states "he kicked one goal before injuring his calf late in the first term but stayed on the ground until the third quarter". Also heard that he spoke to the mid aged high school kids about self esteem and similar and was very good. A sometimes strange cat but always gave his all for the Blues. Good to see him still doing good things.
