If we don't get kelly either don't waste money on Ablett or Rockliff renegotiate Ben brown $6 million for 7 years with $3 million up front next year then get him for unders the rest of his contract war chest open again next year.
errr.... why negotiate a worse position than you have. Also, we should be looking at Daniher money - 4 million over 6.

Don't agree. Not enough top end talent in the upper age bracket without Dusty to justify it. Time to rebuild. Swallow, Gibson, Thomas and Waite should all be moved on. Thompson can still play and is in the best form of the older players -- one more year.

Spot on, only getting 1 A grade mid will see us back to middle of the road. A full rebuild is whats required if we like it or not.

If Josh Kelly re-signs, then we hang our heads in shame, admit 2017 was a failure and move on.

We get to 95% of the cap by bringing back our veterans, re-signing Brown/McDonald/Garner and dangling a few heavily front-loaded contracts at players like Harley Balic, Rhys Mathieson and Tom Lamb. I think it's important to keep as much cap as possible available in 2018 as it'd be a waste to bring in a Motlop/Matera type at the expense of having another crack at a marquee player.

As for 2018:

There's the obvious marquee targets in Tom Lynch, Toby Greene and Lachie Whitfield, but I'd be thinking more outside the box.

Adelaide have Rory Sloane, Tex Walker, Matt Crouch, Rory Laird, Brodie Smith, Tom Lynch, Rory Atkins and Charlie Cameron all out of contract next year. While it would make things awkward at family functions, I'd be dangling 5 years and 5.5 million in front of Matt Crouch and seeing if that's enough to get him to come home.

Hawthorn didn't stay down long - they doubled their money when they were down by trading out strong players for picks. No-one else had the guts to do the same, and now free agency has come in so no-one is going pay the stupidly generous draft prices any more. Plus they had the genius/luck to get Franklin and Clarkson. No-one else could replicate that.

Dogs got Bontempelli with one of their high picks - the others aren't worth much - so that's just one draft and there's never a guarantee of the jackpot like that. If there was, this one pick 4 would be enough.

Collingwood dipped that one year (2005) they got Pendlebury and Thomas. The flag team was as much about Ball and Jolly as that draft.

The other clubs who have tried to load up on talent have failed miserably to capitalise.

I'm not sure its a viable strategy. Reset is fine.
We still need to fill the cap space. Why not grab an ablett for 1 year.

I suspect that in the long run, Kelly will be better value than Martin if we can get him. Having said that I doubt if we will get Kelly, at least not this time. I also suspect that our aggressive tactics will have been viewed very closely by a number of other clubs, looking to move on or push their current clubs to pay more for their services. This trade period is going to be a very tricky and intriguing one. We won't want to now throw some higher dollars at player who may not be worth it in the long run. Pick 4 is nowhere near as good a position to be in versus pick 1. Somehow we need to get a quality uncontracted player plus retain/trade for some high picks, to give us the maximum leverage to start back up the ladder again.

I think we are going to be in for some tough times ahead

I like this option - maybe $4m over 5 years for BBB is more like it - but the idea of front loading $2-3m in year 1 is perfect.

Locks up our key forward so we don't have to worry about other clubs sniffing around with $1m + offers.

Also means we have plenty left in the Cap in 2019/20.

Carey always had his contracts re-negotiated a year in advance - we need to do the same with BBB.

Never been a fan of the panacea, the silver bullet, the quick fix, the messiah. Not usually a recipe for success. Would love Josh Kelly *if he wants to come* but not if it's truckloads of cash and then expecting the earth. I don't believe that ever ends very well.

kelly will be the best player in the league next year, and is 22. he is worth it.

If I'm correct, he is contracted until 2018. Any new contract will apply from 2019 going forward. So it will only be 2020 we will have cap space if we front load in 2019. Does this change expectations a bit?

Even if we get Kelly we should do this now theres no Martin. We need 2 gun mids not 1, and need one via FA given our need for picks as well.

No - re do the contract now - lock him away and front load. The deal can take his 2018 wage into account for next year in the total deal but redo the contract now so we can front load.

Far better option than getting desperate and paying massive overs to a bunch of Joe Averages just so we can spend the cap minimum.

Last time we got desperate we ended up with Anderson - we have to avoid these sort of mistakes if we want to progress.

Pardon my french but when are people going to get it through their ******* heads that these blokes are contracted?

Do you want to pay out and ditch club stalwarts so we can speculate on pick ******* 76 and 94 in a pox draft?

It's stupid and its crass.
Lindsay played 9 games in a bottom four team. A trade would be in his best interests. Swallow is in the same boat, would be a starting midfielder for Gold Coast.
