For me it's the player as well. Should not have gone there at all.
But you are correct. The money & years signed are the main cause of angst
Seriously, the players fault?

Its entirely the recruiting department/list management at fault.

The individual in question isn't responsible for the deal the club puts in front of him.

Thanks for posting. Particularly liked the twitter responder who described him as looking disabled. Harsh but fair.

More so a defence in regards to how that discussion went down. Despite his many faults as a coach I can't see him speaking in support of a guy as shit as Mayne was toward the end of 2016 then simply not playing him after doing that. Setting the contract and personalities involved aside given Buckley's continued use of Blair it doesn't make sense.

My best guess is that either he and the 5 others weren't firm enough with Gubby around targeting him or they were firm and Ed gave Gubby ultimate power. The talk of him being blindsided or accepting of Mayne doesn't wash with me.

I could be wrong here, but I don't think we're all that far apart on this one. Where is it you stand on it again? As above I'm strong on it being Gubby's call, but Buckley et al were aware of how it was going to go down. The contract hurts, but like TTRRAAVVIISS posted it was just a dumb move with or without the exorbitant deal because he's cooked. Either way let's fix it now!

FWIW after listening the second time a few things struck me. Buckley referred to Hine as Derek whereas it's always been Dekka previously (probably means nothing). I think the TPP repair stuff was spot on because Buckley referenced fixing from within (praise the lord some list chemistry). I don't think they'll be too upset to see the back of Fas given the concerns over forward retention.
The way I heard it was that Mayne was brought up during meeting (Gubby - you recall he didn't think much of our list?), Bucks not that keen but asked Hine to check it out, was hesitant as didn't suit the profile he was looking for. Both Gubby and Hine were working on the deal separately!
Bucks not happy with contract length nor price that was settled in the end.

As Buckley said, did cost us - it cost us salary space.

Just hope that Allen does not return as some rumours seem to indicate.

The one thing about Buckley in the past he has been reluctant to bad mouth Collingwood people, in fact can only recall one dig at MM and this latest one.

Hatsh but not reslly fair at all...
Id commebt on that in th comfort of a loubge room bar wherever but its bullying and cowardly to do it on social media.

IDGAF just pay him out now and flush him like the unwanted turd he is.

Otherwise this circus is going to hang over our heads like the Sword of Damocles.

Sometimes you just need to admit your mistakes, pay the penalty and move on.

Come on peoples it's easy to work out what went wrong.
Gubby was in a meeting with Colin Young, saw Bucks walk past and shrugged his shoulders questioningly.
Bucks held his two fingers up and he kept walking.
Gubby offered $2m and Young kindly agreed to stretch it over 4 years to help our TPP.
Problem is Bucks meant two years.

I think he meant "get ****ed, Gubby." Old mate getting parachuted in by McGuire cost Buckley his good friend and mentor Balme...

If that's the case which tail is wagging which dog? Was / is the FD working to a plan to improve on-field performance or is it a loose assortment of fiefdoms with zero co-ordination?

Hence the review.
In an idea world, I think the coach would tell the list manager/recruiters what game plan he was trying to play to.
From that, the list manager would make the decisions as to go to draft/trade etc and the recruiters would give advice on who might be the best fit for each required position.

Buckley stated that while we lead the league in contested possession, we're in the bottom 4 for CP in our forward half.
I propose that it went something like this:

Buckley: We need more pressure acts in our forward half.
Gubby: Hold my beer.

Gubby was trying pretty hard to get Mayne to GWS prior to him coming to us. It's undoubtedly all his fault.

Buckley is the exact opposite of a people person - what a gutless act from him! And nobody is allowed to say anything because he'll hide behind Eddie's back.

Whatever, it sounds like Mayne is getting the sack now. What a ****ing disaster for everybody involved.

I would think the coach would have been consulted and given Mayne was recruited I would presume he was ok with it. That itself is something I would have found surprising given Mayne's career and form.

The deal on the other hand is another matter and Buckley clearly distanced himself from that aspect - which I also presume to be 100% accurate.

It would have been Hine/Gubby that went through TPP and worked out how he fit.
He clearly distanced himself from it in the interview which is sad from Mayne's point of view.
I can't imagine how this year must have made him feel to be honest. He did what we all would have done and followed the $$$'s.

A bit short sighted too, if your hoping to negotiate him out the door, publicly embarrassing him won't encourage him to give you a discount on the payout.

What exactly was the gutless act?

Hence the review. 1. In an idea world, 2. I think the coach would tell the list manager/recruiters what game plan he was trying to play to.
1. Pies not operating in ideal world - looks like they're on another planet

2. Exactly - I posted this precise point somewhere on BF a couple of days ago.

If the game plan is not driving recruiting / list mmgt, might as well all go home now

Who got Mayne to the Club? Gubby.
Who ticked off on getting Mayne to Club from start to finish? Buckley.
Who got Gubby to the club? El President.
Who's putting their hand up to say we stuffed up? No F****** idea!

Let's have another review to work out who's actually running the club? Seriously, and we want to make the Club great again? It used to be great. What happened?
