More like the popularity of the WAFL, and the inclusion of community assets such as childcare have meant it is better value for them.
Spot on. The AFLW really took everyone by surprise, to the point that it was one of the killers of the airport option. No-one predicted its popularity, as was evidenced by the scramble for alternative venues from round one. For the airport, it meant that a different level of lighting would have been required for broadcast purposes, and that was one factor that killed it. (Noise was another factor and an embarrassing lack of understanding initially for the noise engineer).
The commercial aspect is also really important. Whereas the Springwood club currently props up the club finances somewhat, the tables will be turned with revenue from Springfield amenities funding upgrades and rennos for the social club, as well as providing strong revenue to the football club.

Brisbane Lions in danger of losing AFLW stars after failing to secure funding for boutique stadium
Andrew Hamilton, Trenton Akers, The Courier-Mail

BRISBANE’S AFLW side is under siege with the State Government’s reluctance to commit to a new boutique stadium at Springfieldexposing them to interstate poaching raids.

The Courier Mail understands six Victorian clubs and the Gold Coast Suns who submitted bids to the AFL to be included in the expanded AFLW competition for 2019 included teams in their proposals that were littered with Lions players.

STATE OF ORIGIN: BIG V HANDS ALLIES A LESSON

Several Victorian clubs had star utility Kaitlyn Ashmore listed as their marquee player. It is understood the glamour girl has already toured Geelong’s facilities.

Brittany Gibson and Jessica Wuetschner also feature prominently in some submissions.

Lions AFLW chief executive Breeanna Brock said without a boutique 10,000 to 15,000 seat Stadium, which would be adjoined to the club’s new training and administration base at Springfield, the Lions would struggle to retain their best talent and also grow their fan and corporate supporter base.

The Lions currently play out of Brendale which is only expected to cope with home-and-away crowds for another season.

The heat of February means the games there are scheduled at 10am because there are no suitable broadcast quality lights, which costs the Lions free-to-air TV exposure.

The venue is also unsuitable for finals.

“It is critical, there are big implications for us in player retention and the development of our football program,’’ she said.

“We just want to feel like we have a home so we can move forward as a club.”

The Lions are already in negotiations to sell a home game to Tasmania next year.

The State Government jumped on board the Lions as they went undefeated through the inaugural AFLW home-and-away season before losing the grand final to the Adelaide Crows.

But that has not led to a solid funding commitment.

Sports Minister Mick de Brenni again stopped short of guaranteeing funding when asked by The Courier-Mail this week.

“The Government is continuing high level talks with the AFL and the Lions about ways of working together to support the continued growth of the game across the state,’’ he said.

“Supporting the growth of women’s sport is a key focus of sports investment for the Palaszczuk Government.’’

Brisbane has already secured $40m towards the training and administration base.

Springfield Land Corporation has committed $18m and offered an annual peppercorn lease of $1 for the land, the AFL has agreed to pitch in $10m and the Ipswich City Council $12m.

That money all goes to the training and administration base which would be the first in Australia to be specifically designed as a shared venue for the women’s and men’s teams.

The Lions are now after $30m in additional funding, to be shared between State and Federal Governments, to build the boutique stadium and erect broadcast quality lighting.

Lions chairman Bob Sharpless was in Canberra again this week pushing the club’s case.

Gonna miss out on a big opportunity if Queensland can't support a footy team in the biggest womens sporting competition in Australia.

That really pisses me off. If your documented plan to enter the competition requires the poaching of a number of players from an existing team then clearly the talent pool is not big enough to expand the competition just yet.

Not just the women's in trouble - if we don't get this signed off soon the 2018/19 out of contact players will be ripe to go somewhere else with the facilities that can help them reach their personal potential. And I wouldn't blame them one little bit.

We are always better at our jobs when the environment makes doing our job as easy as possible.

I probably shouldn't have gotten too excited on those facilities.

Players should get used to the Gabba dungeon.
So what does this mean? Springfield not likely to happen anymore?
Facilities will still be built. The extra funding is for it to include a stadium and the crazy expensive lights that allow TV broadcast (among other things).
The $30million shortfall won't stop training and admin facilities for the Lions to be built. Just a smaller less sexy building, less landscaping, seating/stands etc.

I suppose the good vibes of this year couldn't last forever.....we always seem to have to fight for what we need. The AFL must act by putting in remaining money we need.

..they have too or AFL in Queensland is doomed. Surely they won't let our girls team disband!

What a bloody fiasco.

I wonder if this will be withheld until the state election is announced (a lot of signs pointing to it) and then rolled out as an election commitment. I do hope this time we are also quietly talking to the other mob just in case Anastasia gets rolled.

You would hope so, would surely be the sensible thing to do..
