Will the AFL get rid of the pre finals bye after this year?

The effects of the pre finals bye on the top 8 are well documented, and the only reason it was introduced in the first place was to please the betting agencies.

When Adelaide and Richmond lose their preliminary finals this year, the media will begin to put pressure on the AFL to get rid of it, as that will mean the qualifying final winners have a 0-4 record since the bye was introduced. Prior to the bye the record of the qualifying final winners was 24-4.

I have no doubt that Geelong and GWS strategically lost their qualifying finals this year, as these two teams found out the hard way last year that no one can win a final after playing only 1 game of footy in 26 days.

Do you think the pre finals bye will be scrapped after this year, or do you think that it's here to stay?

So Geelong wanted to play Sydney @ the MCG then Adelaide @ Adelaide oval for the best route to the grand final? Haha, ok.

It's only in place for financial reasons.

As long as it works in that sense - it will stay.

It's just click bait big footy style.

No one can win a game of footy after 1 game on 26 days and won't be a chance against a side who has played 2 games in 26 days.

Hmmm

I guess it was naive to even hope that people could let it play out for at least one more season before making a definitive call

Premise of the thread would be stronger after the semi finals at the very least...

You have lost the plot. What a shithouse thread. The EBA says that there has to be 2 bye rounds through the year. This has nothing to do with betting agencies. Putting it at the end of the year meant there was less disruption to the season through the year.

It was the sole reason Geelong lost on Friday night, so I hope so.

no, you lost because you recorded your worst kicking efficiency in your clubs history, it will be the same reason when Sydney knock you out in straight sets..
Look who can't understand sarcasm guys.

How is it "well documented" based on one single completed finals series?

Based on Gill's comments I don't think they are going to do away with it anytime soon.

To win the flag you have to win 3 games in a row against the best teams in the competition, the equation for us to win the flag is still the same as it was this time last week, but the pre finals bye has essentially fixed something that wasn't broken, so you're better off losing the qualifying final.

There was a bye mid July 2014 when Round 18, 2014 was stretched 9 days

Friday, 18th July
Carlton vs North Melbourne (D)

Saturday 19th July
St Kilda vs Fremantle (D)
GWS Giants vs Geelong (SS)
Port Adelaide vs Melbourne (AO)

Sunday 20th July
Western Bulldogs vs Essendon (D)
Byes: West Coast, Richmond, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Sydney, Collingwood, Adelaide

Friday, 25th July
West Coast vs Richmond (S)

Saturday 26th July
Brisbane vs Gold Coast (G)
Hawthorn vs Sydney (MCG)

Sunday 27th July
Collingwood vs Adelaide (MCG)
Byes: Carlton, North Melbourne, St KIlda, Fremantle, GWS, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Essendon

A split round would be better than a pre-finals bye. Pre-Finals bye should be scrapped and replaced with 2 in-season byes like above.

Except you have next zero chance of beating the Swans, it's laughable to think otherwise..

Have a split round during the season similar to the one they had in 2014..
